    **Week 1 Discussion**

    **The Big Picture**

Taking into consideration what you have achieved in your academic and professional career thus far and what you plan to do in the future, what are your thoughts about “the big picture” of your life? This can include your own personal mission or purpose, the goals you have set for yourself, and so on. Perhaps you have certain goals or plans related to pursuing a particular career path, or perhaps there is a personal passion you want to pursue. In people’s personal lives, these big-picture goals may be related to career, relationships, health, financial stability, and so forth, and they may or may not be connected to a person’s sense of mission or purpose. In an organizational context, these “big picture” goals may also be financially focused, related to the sustainability of the organization, and connected to an organizational mission. In either context, long-term, strategic planning is key to ensuring that goals are met. And when driven by a mission or purpose, achievement of those goals can fulfill even greater outcomes than simply an individual person’s or business’s success. In this Discussion, you will consider your experiences with and knowledge of organizational culture and mission- or purpose-driven strategy to analyze the roles they play in an organization.

    **To prepare for this Discussion:**

    · Draw upon the knowledge and skills you have developed throughout your program.

    · Consider your experiences with and knowledge of organizational culture.

    · Consider the idea of an organization being mission driven or purpose driven.

**Post** your analysis of the role of culture, mission, and purpose in an organization’s strategy, to include the following:

    · In your own words, briefly explain what strategy is and how it can help business leaders to focus on “the big picture.”

    · Based on your own experiences and knowledge of organizational culture, identify which aspects of culture within organizations are most critical to the development and execution of business strategy. Explain why.

    · Analyze whether it is beneficial for an organization to base its strategy on being mission driven or purpose driven. Explain why or why not. Are there any negatives or compromises that organizations might need to consider?

    Data Visualization Practice

Practice Activity: Describing Data Graphically in Excel

    Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to practice using
**Excel** for basic data analysis and graphing. You will work with an Excel dataset provided and complete several exercises to gain experience with descriptive statistics, histograms, and data visualization.

    This activity is for
**practice only**—it is not graded, but completing it will help you succeed on future assignments.

    Step 1: Prepare Excel

    Enable the Analysis ToolPak

    The
**Analysis ToolPak** is an Excel add-in that provides advanced analysis tools like histograms, regression, and descriptive statistics.

    ·
**For Excel in Microsoft 365 (Windows/Mac):**

    1. Go to the
    **File** tab.

    2. Select
    **Options** (Windows) or
    **Preferences** (Mac).

    3. Choose
    **Add-ins**.

    4. At the bottom, find
    **Manage: Excel Add-ins** and click
    **Go**.

    5. Check the box for
    **Analysis ToolPak** and click
    **OK**.

    6. You should now see
    **Data Analysis** under the
    **Data** tab on the ribbon.

    ·
    **If you don’t see it:**

. Microsoft Support: Load the Analysis ToolPak

Step 2: Download and Open the Files

    1. Download the Excel file:
    [DescribingDataGraphically_Excel_Practice_WithPrompts.xlsx](https://henderson.instructure.com/courses/24639/files/2688373?wrap=1) [Download DescribingDataGraphically_Excel_Practice_WithPrompts.xlsx](https://henderson.instructure.com/courses/24639/files/2688373/download?download_frd=1)

    2. Save it on your computer.

    3. Open the file in Excel.

    Step 3: Exercises

Work through each of the exercises below using Excel. Detailed instructions are provided to guide you.

**Exercise 1 – Hitchcock Film Lengths**

The worksheet contains a list of Hitchcock films and their lengths (in minutes).

    **Part A – Create a Histogram**

    1. Go to the
    **Data** tab →
    **Data Analysis** → choose
    **Histogram**.

    2. For
**Input Range**, select the column with “Film Lengths (min)”.

    3. For
**Bin Range**, leave blank (Excel will create bins automatically).

    4. Check
    **Chart Output**.

    5. Click
    **OK** to create the histogram.

**Part B – Adjust Bin Labels**

    1. Right-click the horizontal axis labels on the histogram.

    2. Choose
    **Format Axis**.

    3. Change the option so bins display as
    **boundaries (cutpoints)** rather than midpoints.

**Part C – Add a Title and Note**

    1. Click the chart title and change it to:

_“Histogram of Hitchcock Film Lengths (min)”_

    2. Insert a text box at the bottom and type:

    _“Bins contain their left endpoints (e.g., 120 ≤ x < 130).”_

    **Part D – Outliers**

    · Look at your histogram. Which film seems unusually long compared to the others? Write it down.

    **Part E – Create a Stem-and-Leaf Alternative**
Excel does not have a built-in stem-and-leaf plot. Instead, create a
    **sorted list**:

    1. Copy the film lengths into a new sheet.

    2. Sort the data from smallest to largest.

    3. This acts as your “leaf” display and will help answer interpretation questions.

**Part F – Answer These Questions:**

    · What is the longest film in the dataset?

    · Are there any films between 85 and 100 minutes?

    · How many films are shorter than 110 minutes?

    · What is the mode (most common length)?

    · Which graph (histogram or sorted list) do you find easier for interpreting film lengths, and why?

    **Exercise 2 – Exam Scores**

Open the worksheet with Exam 1 scores.

    · Use
**Insert > Histogram** to visualize the data with bins of size
**10** and then with bins of size
    **5**.

    · Compare: What does the histogram with smaller bin size reveal that the larger one does not?

**Exercise 3 – NBA Team Salaries**

Open the worksheet with NBA salaries.

    · Create a histogram.

    · Determine:

    1. How many teams had salaries of at least $70 million?

    2. What is the median salary? (Hint: Use the =MEDIAN() formula.)

    **Exercise 4 – Commute Times**

Open the worksheet with commute times.

    **Part A – Histogram**

    1. Use
**Data Analysis > Histogram** to create a histogram.

    2. Add a descriptive title:
    _“Professor’s Commute Times (minutes)”_.

    3. Add a footnote explaining which endpoints are included.

    **Part B – Outlier Removal**

    · One data point (37.4 minutes) is an outlier. Delete it, then re-create the histogram.

    **Part C – Interpretation**

    · How many commutes were between 18 and 18.5 minutes? (Hint: hover over the bin in the histogram.)

**Exercise 5 – News Reading Times**

**Part A – Histogram of Original Data**

    · Create a histogram using cutpoints.

    · Add axis labels (minutes) and a descriptive title.

    **Part B – Skewness**

    · Look at the shape: Is it skewed left, skewed right, or symmetric?

    **Part C – Data Transformation**

    · In a new column, enter the formula: =1/SQRT(cell) for each value.

    · Label this column
    **Transformed Data**.

**Part D – Histogram of Transformed Data**

    · Create another histogram of the transformed data.

    · Title it:
_“Histogram of Transformed News Reading Times (1/√x)”_.

    **Part E – Interpretation**

    · Compare the before/after histograms. What effect did the transformation have?

    4. Check
    **Chart Output**.

    5. Click
    **OK** to create the histogram.

**Part B – Adjust Bin Labels**

    1. Right-click the horizontal axis labels on the histogram.

    2. Choose
    **Format Axis**.

    3. Change the option so bins display as
    **boundaries (cutpoints)** rather than midpoints.

**Part C – Add a Title and Note**

    1. Click the chart title and change it to:

_“Histogram of Hitchcock Film Lengths (min)”_

    2. Insert a text box at the bottom and type:

    _“Bins contain their left endpoints (e.g., 120 ≤ x < 130).”_

    **Part D – Outliers**

    · Look at your histogram. Which film seems unusually long compared to the others? Write it down.

    **Part E – Create a Stem-and-Leaf Alternative**
Excel does not have a built-in stem-and-leaf plot. Instead, create a
    **sorted list**:

    1. Copy the film lengths into a new sheet.

    2. Sort the data from smallest to largest.

    3. This acts as your “leaf” display and will help answer interpretation questions.

**Part F – Answer These Questions:**

    · What is the longest film in the dataset?

    · Are there any films between 85 and 100 minutes?

    · How many films are shorter than 110 minutes?

    · What is the mode (most common length)?

    · Which graph (histogram or sorted list) do you find easier for interpreting film lengths, and why?

    **Exercise 2 – Exam Scores**

Open the worksheet with Exam 1 scores.

    · Use
**Insert > Histogram** to visualize the data with bins of size
**10** and then with bins of size
    **5**.

    · Compare: What does the histogram with smaller bin size reveal that the larger one does not?

**Exercise 3 – NBA Team Salaries**

Open the worksheet with NBA salaries.

    · Create a histogram.

    · Determine:

    1. How many teams had salaries of at least $70 million?

    2. What is the median salary? (Hint: Use the =MEDIAN() formula.)

    **Exercise 4 – Commute Times**

Open the worksheet with commute times.

    **Part A – Histogram**

    1. Use
**Data Analysis > Histogram** to create a histogram.

    2. Add a descriptive title:
    _“Professor’s Commute Times (minutes)”_.

    3. Add a footnote explaining which endpoints are included.

    **Part B – Outlier Removal**

    · One data point (37.4 minutes) is an outlier. Delete it, then re-create the histogram.

    **Part C – Interpretation**

    · How many commutes were between 18 and 18.5 minutes? (Hint: hover over the bin in the histogram.)

**Exercise 5 – News Reading Times**

**Part A – Histogram of Original Data**

    · Create a histogram using cutpoints.

    · Add axis labels (minutes) and a descriptive title.

    **Part B – Skewness**

    · Look at the shape: Is it skewed left, skewed right, or symmetric?

    **Part C – Data Transformation**

    · In a new column, enter the formula: =1/SQRT(cell) for each value.

    · Label this column
    **Transformed Data**.

**Part D – Histogram of Transformed Data**

    · Create another histogram of the transformed data.

    · Title it:
_“Histogram of Transformed News Reading Times (1/√x)”_.

    **Part E – Interpretation**

    · Compare the before/after histograms. What effect did the transformation have?

    ### **Paragraph 1: Summary**(5+ sentences)

    – What were the key points in the reading(s) **and** the lecture notes?  _**Summarize**_ _**both**_ _!_
    – Identify and define important vocabulary
    – What do you want to make sure you remember from this week?

    ### **Paragraph 2: Reaction**(5+ sentences)

    – What was your personal reaction to this topic?
    – Did you notice any connections between this topic and your own life?
    – Did this topic remind you of any current events, media, movies, TV, or academic subjects?

    ### Throughout this semester, you will often see the words **privilege** and **oppression**.

    #### Today we will explore what those terms really mean.

    ## Let’s start with **oppression**

**Oppression:** Prejudice and discrimination directed toward a group.

    – Oppression is created by and continues on because of our **social institutions** (systems like education, law, the family, religion, the media, etc.)

    – This is how we keep oppressing groups generation after generation!  It’s baked into our systems and institutions.
    – Examples of oppression:
    – Sexism
    – Racism
    – Classism (oppression of poor people)
    – Homophobia (oppression of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc.)
    – Ableism (oppression of people with disabilities)
    – _What other examples of oppression can you think of?_

![TITLE: The 4 I's of Oppression and Liberation. The 4 I's of Oppression are a framework used to show how oppression lives in various parts of our life and society. We have adapted this framework to also explain how liberation could take up that same kind of space. The 4 I's are: IDEOLOGICAL: Widely, and often silently, held beliefs. INTERPERSONAL: Everyday interactions between individuals and groups. INSTITUTIONAL: Systemic structures, policies, and practices that govern spaces. INTERNALIZED: Ways individuals integrate beliefs into their own mindsets and thinking.](https://cerritos.instructure.com/courses/109887/files/15716633/preview)

    ## What about **privilege**?

**Privilege:** benefits, advantages, and power given to members of a dominant (powerful) group as a result of the oppression of the marginalized (oppressed) group

    – People/groups can be privileged without realizing, recognizing, or even wanting it
    – For example, one of my privileges is that I am a white person.  On an average day, I do not think about my whiteness.  I still face difficulties in my life, but those difficulties are not based on my whiteness.

    ### Oppressions always have corresponding privileges

    – Sexism + male privilege
    – For example: a woman being asked, “Are you in a bad mood because you’re PMSing?” **versus** a man being asked, “Is everything ok?  It seems like you’re having a hard day.”
    – Racism + white privilege
    – Fearing being the target of violence when you see a police officer **versus** feeling safe when you see a police officer
    – Classism + middle-class or upper-class privilege
    – Worrying about where you will sleep tonight **versus** not having to worry about how you will pay rent/mortgage
    – Homophobia + heterosexual privilege
    – Fearing you could face hateful comments or violence for holding your partner’s hand in public **versus** holding your partner’s hand in public without thinking about it
    – Ableism + able-bodied privilege
    – Not being able to enter, navigate, and exit a space easily **versus** not needing to think about how you will enter, navigate, and exit a space

    ## BUS 400 Module One Assignment Guidelines and Rubric

    ### Overview

Driving business innovation and creating sustainable pathways for growth are challenging endeavors. Leaders in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations, regardless of their size, work diligently to develop strategies that ensure long-term success. They recognize that being a market leader now does not guarantee success tomorrow, making innovative thinking essential for capitalizing on opportunities and staying competitive.

However, innovation requires more than creative ideas. It demands a proactive approach. Leaders must consistently monitor industry trends, competitive dynamics, customer needs, and emerging technologies to uncover opportunities for innovation and growth. This vigilance enables them to adapt to change, address challenges, and maintain a strong competitive edge.

    ### Scenario

As the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO), you are responsible for steering the organization’s innovation strategy to ensure it remains competitive, relevant, and forward-thinking. This strategy involves identifying, developing, and implementing innovative ideas, products, services, processes, or business models that create value and align with the company’s strategic objectives.

A key milestone during your first
90 days is to identify a new opportunity. Your task is to craft a concept brief introducing a new product or service designed to drive business growth and capture emerging opportunities. A concept brief provides a clear and concise document that introduces the key elements of a project, idea, or initiative to ensure alignment among stakeholders. It serves as a communication tool that helps decision makers and stakeholders understand the scope, objectives, and vision of the idea, enabling informed decision making and collaboration.

Your proposed product or service must stand out as unique within the industry, be difficult to replicate, and align closely with consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP). The perceived value of the product or service primarily drives a consumer’s WTP. The consumers will not be inclined to pay for it if they do not understand or recognize the value or if the offering fails to address their specific pain points. Therefore, the proposed idea must clearly demonstrate its value and effectively solve the problems that matter most to consumers.

    1. Step One: Choose a U.S. company from the List of Companies linked in the Supporting Materials below.
    2. Step Two: Research the market to gain a better understanding of the industry landscape, market trends, future forecasts, and the company’s financials and available resources.
    3. Step Three: Identify 3 to 5 viable concepts to drive business opportunities for your U.S. company.
    4. Step Four: Develop a concept brief.

    ### Directions

Use resources such as GlobalData Explorer and Yahoo Finance, which are linked in the Supporting Materials section below. Also, use the investor relations page on the company’s website to create a concept brief. Pay special attention to the company’s 10K Report with a focus on its business in North America. Note: You will expand on this research throughout the course.

    Your concept brief should:

    1. Include the name and describe the U.S. company that you selected and researched.
    2. Introduce and describe your proposed new and unique product or service.
    3. Include an image of the company’s existing SWOT analysis from the Shapiro Library, which can be found using the resource linked in the Supporting Materials section below.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

    1. Value Proposition: Describe the company’s existing value proposition.

    1. What is the company’s
    main business?

    2. What value does the company deliver to the customer?
    2. Profitability: Determine if the company is profitable now.
    3. SWOT Analysis Strengths: Explain the company’s main strengths that can be leveraged to create a new product or service.
    4. Product or Service Singularity: Identify what is unique about the new product or service.

    1. What is unique about the new product or service?
    5. New Product or Service Projections: Describe how the new product or service can improve profitability.

    1. How can a new product or service improve profitability? Note: This is an estimation based on research into the company’s existing market position.

    ### What to Submit

Your concept brief must be between 400 and 800 words in length and be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. Your concept brief should be professionally formatted and written in second-person or third-person voice. Any sources cited should use APA formatting.

Driving Innovation for a Local Dog Breeding Business in New York
Business Name: Paws and Pedigrees Breeding Co.

Concept Title: From Our Home to Yours: Innovating Local Dog Breeding With Premium Care and
    Community Connection

    Background and Opportunity
The dog breeding industry is highly competitive, with projected annual revenue growth of 2.6%,
reaching $3.1 billion by the end of 2024 (Tang, 2014). Despite this growth, many businesses fail to adopt
modern approaches to customer engagement, transparency, and value-added services.

Paws and Pedigrees Breeding Co. has a unique opportunity to stand out by offering more than just
healthy, ethically bred puppies. By introducing innovative services and experiences, we can build trust,
enhance customer relationships, and meet the growing demand for responsible breeding practices.

According to a 2023 to 2024 survey of U.S. pet owners, it is estimated that 65.1 million households have
at least one dog. More Americans own dogs than any other type of pet (Shahbandeh, 2024). As pet
owners increasingly seek ethical practices, health guarantees, and personalized support, we have an
opportunity to compete more strategically by leveraging the strong emotional connection people have
    with their pets.

    The Idea
Introduce the “Puppy Concierge Experience,” a premium service model designed to elevate the
customer journey from the initial inquiry through long-term pet ownership. This innovative approach
combines education, personalized care, and ongoing post-purchase support, ensuring a seamless and
    memorable experience for every customer.

By offering this unique service, Paws and Pedigrees Breeding Co. will carve out a distinctive niche and
stand out in a competitive market. This model can deliver exceptional value and also foster lasting
relationships with our clients, setting a new standard for excellence in the dog breeding industry.

Six Key Features of the “Puppy Concierge Experience”

    1. Virtual Puppy Meet-and-Greets:
    A. Offer virtual introductions to puppies via live video, allowing potential owners to see

personalities and temperaments in real time.
    2. Personalized Puppy Care Kits:

    A. Provide a curated care package with essentials like food, toys, and training guides that
are tailored to the puppy’s breed and age.

    3. Educational Workshops:
    A. Host monthly virtual or in-person workshops that are open to customers and the

broader pet-loving community. Topics include puppy training, nutrition, and veterinary
    care.

    4. Lifetime Support Network:
    A. Establish a community platform where puppy owners can connect, share experiences,

    and access breeder advice post-purchase.

    5. Sustainability Commitment:
    A. Partner with local suppliers for eco-friendly care kits and establish green practices in

breeding and care to appeal to environmentally conscious customers.
    6. Health and Transparency Guarantee:

    A. Offer detailed health records, DNA testing results, and an open-door policy for in-person
    visits, building trust through transparency.

    Benefits

    • For the Business:

 Increase customer loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals.

 Attract a premium market segment willing to pay for value-added services.

 Strengthen brand reputation as a responsible, innovative breeder.

    • For Customers:

 Provide peace of mind with expert guidance and care.

 Enhance the joy of pet ownership with tailored resources and ongoing support.

 Foster a sense of community and belonging among dog owners.

    Implementation Plan

    1. Phase 1: Planning (1‒2 Months):
    A. Develop the “Puppy Concierge Experience” branding and marketing materials.
    B. Establish partnerships with local suppliers and pet care professionals.

    2. Phase 2: Pilot Launch (3 Months):
    A. Offer the service to a select group of customers and collect feedback.
    B. Promote the concept via local events, social media, and collaborations with pet-focused

    organizations in New York.
    3. Phase 3: Full Rollout (6 Months):

    A. Expand marketing efforts, including testimonials from pilot participants.
    B. Integrate the services into standard business operations.

    Conclusion
The growth of the pet industry is expected to decelerate due to rising costs and shifting demographics.
Higher expenses for essentials like veterinary care and pet food will strain household budgets,
prompting consumers to be more cautious with discretionary spending on pets. These factors may lead
to more conservative investment habits and a potential decline in pet ownership rates (Tang, 2014).

The “Puppy Concierge Experience” is a forward-looking concept that meets the changing expectations of
customers who value high-quality, ethical, and supportive pet ownership experiences. By integrating
premium services with strong community engagement, Paws and Pedigrees Breeding Co. can establish
itself as an innovative leader in the local dog breeding market. This approach will position the company
for sustainable growth and long-term success.
