Internal Pay Structures: Based on your own work experience, observations, or a realistic workplace example, identify the factors you believe should have the greatest influence on an organization’s internal pay structure. Consider factors such as skills, education, experience, responsibility, decision-making authority, working conditions, performance, and market demand. Which factors should carry the most weight, and why?

    1. Job Analysis: Many managers view job analysis as a time-consuming process that takes employees away from their regular responsibilities. Why might managers feel this way? Do you agree that job analysis is a waste of time, or do you believe it is necessary for fair compensation and effective job design? Explain your position.
    2. Employee Reactions to Job Evaluation: Imagine you manage a team of 10 employees who become concerned after learning that HR plans to evaluate their jobs. What concerns might employees have about the evaluation? As their manager, how would you communicate with and reassure them? Describe at least two specific actions you would take to build trust and reduce anxiety during the process.
    3. Job Titles, Status, and Retention: In the E*TRADE example from the textbook, the organization reduced the number of employees holding vice president and director titles, even though salaries remained unchanged. Why might employees leave an organization after a title change when their pay has not been reduced? Consider the effects of professional identity, status, career advancement, recognition, authority, and future employment opportunities. If your job title were lowered but your salary and responsibilities stayed the same, how would you respond—and why?
    4. Connecting the Concepts: Explain how an organization can use job analysis, job evaluation, pay structures, and job titles in a way that supports fairness, employee motivation, and retention. What could happen if the organization handles these decisions poorly or communicates them unclearly?

    Mini-Case: Ford Versus General Motors

    The Race to Become All-Electric

Ford’s world headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, is only 9 miles from the headquarters of General Motors (GM). Rivalry between the two companies has become especially bitter since Tesla’s advances in electric vehicles. Both Ford and GM are shifting their overall strategic plan to become all-electric, perhaps as soon as 2030. The two companies are building their own battery factories and are partnering with technology companies to access digital innovations. Between 2021 and 2025, Ford has pledged to spend $30 billion on electric vehicles. Globally, electric vehicles comprised 9 percent of automobile sales, but only 3.6 percent in the United States, with both numbers increasing rapidly.

Ford recently out-negotiated GM to garner 12 percent ownership of Rivian Automotive based in Irvine, California. Rivian went public in November 2021 and produces the world’s first all-electric pickup truck called the R1T, and a midsize all-electric SUV called the R1S, at its Illinois factory. Ford today has a collaboration partnership with Rivian, but GM is soon to release its own all-electric pickup truck, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. Whichever firm, Ford or GM, best manages their shift to becoming all-electric will garner huge competitive advantages at a time when gas and diesel vehicles are both companies’ bread-and-butter revenue and profit generators.

President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package aims to build a national network of electric-vehicle charging stations. The level of government support for electrifying transportation in the United States is higher than ever; even school buses likely soon must be all-electric.

    Questions

Week 4 Discussion: Chapter 5 (Job-Based Structures and Job Evaluation)

Employees consider fairness when comparing their pay, workload, performance, and opportunities with others.

    Initial Post

    Choose two scenarios and respond.

    Pay equity

An underperforming coworker has half your workload but earns 25% more. You have the same work hours and tenure.

Would you address the situation? Why or why not?

How would you raise the concern professionally?

What information would you need before deciding the difference is unfair?

    Discrimination allegation

Angela Lee claims she was denied promotion and received lower raises than less-qualified employees.

What laws or protections may apply?

What HR records and policies could support the company’s response?

What should the company improve to prevent future claims?

    Group performance

    Consider a recent group project.

Name three criteria for evaluating each member’s contribution.

Should peers evaluate one another, and should those ratings affect grades?

Should the instructor evaluate individual performance?

How does this connect to a 360-degree review?

    Low-pay organization

You supervise a company that pays below competitors.

What can you do to help employees feel respected and fairly treated?

Which non-pay benefits, recognition, communication, or work conditions could help?

What are the limits of relying on nonfinancial rewards?
