Dr. Gelsomino’s Podiatry Office is a well-established medical office that specializes in foot and ankle care. His main office is located in Oaklawn, Illinois, but he works at his up-north office on the weekends since he has a strong clientele there too. The clinic has been an important part of the local community for several years due to their providing high-quality podiatric care to all patients who walk through his doors. The office recently expanded its care team by adding two more podiatrists, one who retired last year, and chose to come back part time. Dr. Kunz is part-time as well, and on the days, he is not in the office he is doing surgery in the hospital. This decision to add to the team is aimed at accommodating the growing demand in clientele for specialized care. This has also resulted in a room expansion in the office. This expansion complements the clinic’s commitment to continue to serve the healthcare needs of the community. The office’s ongoing adoption of the NextGen system demonstrates adaptability and a commitment to quality improvement, contributing to the clinic’s overall effectiveness and reputation for high-quality care.

    ### **C) Reflections**

    #### **General Observations**

During my internship at Dr. Gelsomino’s Podiatry Office, I observed that the daily operations of a medical office require precision, communication, and adaptability. A typical day begins with preparing the office for patient appointments, answering phone calls, and confirming scheduled visits. Administrative staff coordinate closely with medical assistants and doctors to ensure that patients are seen promptly and that records are accurate and up-to-date.

I noticed the significant role that technology plays in streamlining operations. The NextGen electronic health record system allows for easy access to patient information, appointment scheduling, and billing details. Transitioning from paper to electronic records presents challenges, such as learning the new system and ensuring accuracy during data entry, but it significantly improves efficiency once implemented.

The team dynamics in the office are essential to its success. Staff members support each other through high patient volume days, demonstrating effective teamwork and communication. I observed how positive interactions among staff create a welcoming environment for patients and contribute to smoother operations. Patients often expressed appreciation for the staff’s attentiveness, illustrating how administrative efficiency and patient care are interconnected.

    #### **Analysis of Experiences**

My responsibilities included answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, checking patients in and out, scanning medical records into the NextGen system, and supporting billing and coding processes. Each task required specific skills and attention to detail. For example, scheduling appointments required careful coordination to avoid conflicts and ensure patients were seen in a timely manner. Checking patients in and out demanded professionalism, empathy, and accuracy in verifying personal and insurance information.

Scanning records and managing patient files exposed me to the technical side of healthcare administration. I learned how critical accurate documentation is for both patient safety and insurance compliance. Handling billing and coding introduced me to the complexities of healthcare reimbursement, insurance claims, and the importance of accuracy to avoid delays in payment or claim denials.

Throughout these experiences, I faced challenges such as handling multiple tasks simultaneously, learning the NextGen system quickly, and assisting patients who were frustrated or confused by insurance procedures. Overcoming these challenges enhanced my problem-solving skills and taught me how to remain calm and professional under pressure.

By connecting these tasks to my healthcare administration coursework, I gained a deeper understanding of how theory translates into practice. Concepts such as workflow management, patient satisfaction, and health information systems became tangible through real-world application.

    #### **Professional Gains**

Professionally, this internship strengthened both my technical and interpersonal skills. I became proficient in using the NextGen system for record scanning and documentation, which is a valuable skill for any healthcare administration role. I also gained experience in handling billing and coding procedures, which are essential for efficient healthcare operations.

Interpersonal skills such as effective communication, teamwork, and professionalism were significantly enhanced. Interacting with patients, colleagues, and insurance representatives required clear communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities. These experiences built my confidence and reinforced the importance of a patient-centered approach in healthcare administration.

Additionally, the internship allowed me to observe leadership and organizational strategies within a medical office. I noticed how staff delegation, workflow management, and technology integration contribute to overall efficiency and patient satisfaction. Understanding these operational components will guide me in future leadership roles within healthcare administration.

    #### **Personal Gains**

On a personal level, I developed patience, empathy, and adaptability. Working with patients who were anxious or unfamiliar with medical procedures required me to practice patience and provide reassurance. I also gained a better understanding of the challenges patients face when navigating healthcare systems, especially those with limited financial resources or public insurance.

My work ethic and time management skills improved as I balanced multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. I learned to prioritize responsibilities, stay organized, and maintain attention to detail, even during high-pressure situations. These personal gains have not only enhanced my professional capabilities but also my confidence in handling future workplace challenges.

A specific example that highlights my personal growth occurred when a patient arrived confused about their insurance coverage and became visibly frustrated. I was able to calmly explain the process, verify their information, and assist them in completing necessary forms. This experience reinforced the importance of empathy, patience, and clear communication in healthcare administration. Moments like these helped me develop confidence in addressing patient concerns professionally while maintaining a supportive and efficient workflow.

Furthermore, observing the staff’s dedication and teamwork taught me the value of collaboration. I realized that in healthcare, success is not just about individual performance but about working together to ensure that patient care is seamless, efficient, and compassionate. I also became more aware of the administrative side of healthcare and how critical it is for the overall success of medical operations.

    #### **Reflection on Professional & Academic Objectives**

The internship experience has been instrumental in advancing my professional and academic objectives outlined in my Professional Development Plan. One of my primary goals was to gain hands-on experience in healthcare administration to complement my academic knowledge. By actively participating in daily office operations, I was able to apply classroom concepts such as workflow management, patient scheduling, and health information technology to real-world scenarios.

For example, while I gained familiarity with billing and coding procedures, more in-depth knowledge in medical coding and insurance claim management is necessary for my career goals. I plan to pursue additional training or certifications in these areas to enhance my qualifications.

Another professional objective was to improve my communication and interpersonal skills in a healthcare setting. Working directly with patients, staff, and insurance representatives allowed me to practice professional communication, active listening, and problem-solving in real situations. This has strengthened my confidence and ability to interact effectively in a professional environment.

The internship also reinforced the importance of adaptability in a healthcare setting. Transitioning to electronic health records posed initial challenges, but observing how staff adapted to new technology taught me the significance of flexibility and continuous learning. I now recognize that staying current with healthcare technology is essential for efficiency and effectiveness in administration roles.

    #### **Steps to Meet Future Professional & Academic Objectives**

Based on my experiences, I have identified specific steps to continue growing professionally and academically:

    1.
**Advanced Training in Billing and Coding:** To strengthen my technical skills, I will seek formal training or certification in medical coding and billing. This will enhance my ability to manage insurance claims accurately and support operational efficiency in healthcare organizations.

    2.
**Healthcare Information Systems Proficiency:** Continuing to build expertise in electronic health record systems, like NextGen, will prepare me for leadership roles in healthcare administration. Familiarity with multiple EHR platforms will make me more versatile in future positions.

    3.

Observing how administrative and clinical teams coordinate will improve my ability to manage healthcare facilities effectively.

    4.
**Professional Networking and Mentorship:** Building relationships with healthcare professionals, both administrative and clinical, will help me learn best practices, gain mentorship, and identify potential career opportunities. Attending workshops or conferences related to healthcare administration will further expand my professional network.

    5.
**Continued Personal Development:** I plan to continue cultivating soft skills such as communication, empathy, and time management. These skills are critical for success in healthcare administration and for creating positive patient experiences.

    6.
**Integration of Academic Knowledge:** I will actively seek opportunities to apply classroom learning to practical settings. This includes using knowledge of healthcare management, quality improvement, and organizational strategy to evaluate processes and propose improvements in future roles.

    #### **Overall Reflection**

Overall, my internship at Dr. Gelsomino’s Podiatry Office has been a transformative experience. It provided me with an in-depth understanding of how a medical office operates, combining administrative efficiency with patient-centered care. I gained technical skills in health information systems and billing, developed professional communication and problem-solving abilities, and experienced personal growth in patience, empathy, and adaptability.

The experience has affirmed my career goals in healthcare administration, highlighting both the challenges and rewards of the field. By bridging academic theory with practical application, I now feel better equipped to enter the workforce with confidence. The lessons learned during this internship will continue to inform my professional development, guiding me as I pursue advanced roles in healthcare management and administration.

Its notable services include patient education initiatives, preventive care programs, and the strategic adoption of health information technology to enhance the quality and accuracy of care.

    ### **B) Department/Unit Mission, Vision, Goals, and Effectiveness**

The administrative and clinical support team at Dr. Gelsomino’s office plays a pivotal role in ensuring smooth daily operations. The mission of this department is to provide accurate, timely, and compassionate administrative and clinical support that directly contributes to high-quality patient care. This mission aligns with the overall organizational goal of improving patient outcomes, satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

The department’s vision focuses on establishing a fully integrated podiatry practice that effectively leverages advanced health information technology to improve workflow, documentation accuracy, and patient experience. The transition to the NextGen electronic health record system exemplifies this vision by streamlining recordkeeping, reducing errors, and facilitating efficient communication between staff and patients.

    The department’s goals are multi-faceted:

    1.
**Efficient Patient Flow:** Ensuring smooth patient check-in and check-out processes to minimize wait times and optimize the clinic’s daily schedule.

    2.
**Accurate Record Management:** Transitioning to electronic medical records while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations and internal quality standards.

    3.
**Billing and Coding Support:** Processing claims efficiently to reduce errors and delays in insurance reimbursement.

The department has proven effective in achieving these goals. Administrative staff consistently manage patient flow with professionalism and efficiency, while maintaining the accuracy of medical records and billing processes.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated professionals who model excellence in both patient care and administrative operations. This internship has not only enhanced my professional capabilities but has also inspired a commitment to continuous learning and improvement in the healthcare field.

    Julia
Julia is a Caribbean American TGNC woman who came to the military chaplain for support
around her gender affirmation process and to help her manage distress and advocacy
having to do specifically with her religious community. Julia was in a very conservative
spiritual community that was deeply meaningful to her, yet rejecting of her relationship
with a man because community members viewed it as “homosexual” in nature, and they
had trouble understanding a TGNC experience. Members were rejecting of her gender
identity on the basis that it goes against “God’s mandated and immutable” binary of sex and
gender, and they rejected her relationship secondary to not accepting her identity as a
straight woman. This experience of rejection was painful for Julia and was a primary focus
of treatment in understanding her need to stay actively connected to this community and
how the connection continued to provide strength and empowerment in ways that were at
times difficult to comprehend clinically. A significant portion of Julia’s resilience was based
in her personal religious beliefs that she was being faithful to the particular religion that
was the only “true” religion. [Adapted from Singh, A., and LM Dickey, eds. (2017).

    [22:22, 11/15/2025] Leo:

To develop effective topics for a literary essay, start by identifying works of literature that intrigue you, then explore recurring themes, literary devices, or character analyses within those works. Consider the author's background, historical context, and how these elements might influence the text. Narrowing down broad topics and focusing on specific aspects will lead to more focused and insightful analysis.

    Here's a more detailed breakdown:

    1. Choose a literary work that interests you:

    Personal connection:

Select a book, play, poem, or short story that you enjoyed or found thought-provoking.

    Unanswered questions:

Identify aspects of the work that you found confusing, intriguing, or challenging to understand.

    Exploration of themes:

Consider works that explore universal themes like love, loss, identity, or social issues.

    2. Identify potential topics:

    Recurring themes:

Analyze how themes like betrayal, redemption, or the corrupting influence of power are presented.

    Character analysis:

Examine the development of characters, their motivations, and their relationships with others.

    Literary devices:

Explore the author's use of symbolism, imagery, metaphor, or foreshadowing and how they contribute to the overall meaning.

    Historical and social context:

Investigate the historical period in which the work was written and how it reflects or challenges the social norms of the time.

    Comparative analysis:

Compare and contrast different works by the same author or by different authors on similar themes or using similar techniques.

    3. Narrow down your topic:

Be specific: Avoid overly broad topics like "love in Shakespeare." Instead, focus on a specific aspect of love in a particular play, like the role of love in Romeo and Juliet's tragic fate.

Consider your interests: Choose a topic that genuinely interests you, as this will make the research and writing process more engaging.

Ensure sufficient evidence: Make sure there's enough textual evidence to support your analysis.

    4. Develop a thesis statement:

    Clear argument:

A strong thesis statement should clearly state your argument about the literary work.

    Specific and focused:

The thesis should be narrow enough to be supported by evidence but broad enough to allow for insightful analysis.

    5. Gather evidence and write the essay:

Support your claims: Use specific examples from the text to support your arguments.

Cite your sources: Properly cite all sources to avoid plagiarism.

Revise and edit: Make sure your essay is well-organized, clear, and free of errors.

By following these steps, you can develop compelling and insightful literary essay topics that will lead to a strong and engaging analysis of your chosen work.

    World Literature Writing Assignment

This essay assignment of approximately four pages (typed, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman Font, MLA style) requires you to meditate on some limited aspects of the works we have covered. Specifically, students will generate a topic of interest, investigate it, and formulate a thesis and cogent argument based upon their understanding of the topic. For example, The Odyssey comments on notions of hospitality, heroism, and home. You might elect to explore one of these topics further by conducting some research* into Homer’s epic. This research, coupled with your own creative viewpoint could make for an interesting argumentative/expository essay.

In Oedipus Rex, we discussed ideas regarding fate, destiny, identity, and the capriciousness of the gods. These broad topics provide excellent starting points for an essay. The next step is to propose a working thesis based upon some facet of that topic. A thesis will seek to account for how a particular textual aspect seems to work. For example, in Oedipus, prophecy and divine revelations are fairly important topics. But, what does the play seem to convey by deploying these elements in the particular manner that it does? A working thesis might be that we are all subject to the whims of the gods; hence, we must all live with a certain degree of fear and trembling. You may support this view with textual quotations and/or legitimate scholarly sources.

    Rubric:

Focus: A clear, persuasive assertion about some aspect of the text supported by textual examples throughout the body.

Development: Specific textual quotes and analysis in multiple paragraphs.

Grammar and MLA Style: Final drafts will be well proofread and free of grammatical errors. MLA format should be strictly followed, including parenthetical quotes and works cited page.

Organization: The essay must have a clear pattern announced in the introduction and signposted throughout with transitions.

*Scholarly articles may be accessed via the university’s database.

    _The Odyssey_

    The
_Odyssey_ was written by Homer during the eight century B.C.E. Homer was a well-known author during this time. He wrote both the
    _Iliad_ and the
_Odyssey_ during this time. Both stories are based on the events of the Trojan war that was between the people of Troy and the Greeks. The
_Odyssey_ shows the journey of Odysseus’ trek back to his home after the war was over. The journey shows many obstacles during his journey of his homecoming. The events of the story also tell of the hospitality of the people Odysseus comes into contact with and the loyalty that Odysseus shows to returning to his home. (Norton 124-129).

There are many cases of hospitality in the
_Odyssey._ Hospitality is treating someone kind that you come into contact with. During this time, the Greeks were infatuated with xenia. This meant they took care of guests- whether passing through or staying a while. In this text, Odysseus comes into contact with many people that treated him hospitably. One notable account of hospitality toward Odysseus was that of Calypso. When Odysseus reached the isle that Calypso lived on, she invited him into her home. Over the span of the eight years that Odysseus resided with Calypso, she began to become too hospitable. She allowed him to sleep in her own bed. She provided him with everything he needed and desired. She did not want Odysseus to continue his journey to his home. He was trapped with Calypso. Athena does a most hospitable work to help Odysseus. Athena presents a request to her father, Zeus, to loosen Calypso’s hold on Odysseus to allow him to escape and continue his journey home. (Homer 178-237). Odysseus was fortunate to have encountered such good hospitable people on his long expedition home after the Trojan war.

While there were many good accounts of hospitality, there were many cases that were the inverse. While in the land of the Phaeacians, Odysseus is treated with hospitality by all except Polyphemus, a one-eyed Cyclops. Polyphemus tries to eat the people with Odysseus. Odysseus and his men escape the monster. Odysseus’ men also did not show hospitality to everyone they came into contact with. Odysseus’ men had been told not to come in contact with the cattle of the Sun. They disobeyed this order and killed the cattle which was the most unhospitable thing they could do while passing through the land. (Homer 178-255). Through completing these acts, Odysseus encountered hardships from the monster and brought hardships upon himself.

    Throughout this story of the
_Odyssey,_ Odysseus presents many examples of loyalty. This loyalty extends to his homeland, his home, and his family. While on the isle with Calypso, Odysseus could have stayed in her house. He would have had anything that he desired or needed. He could have started a new beginning and family with Calypso, a woman much prettier than his own wife, Penelope. Odysseus does not desire this. He longs to return to his own home and his own wife and family. While on the land of the Phaeacians, Odysseus sees how wonderful the land is. The land will grow crops and is beautiful. The land is green and full of life. On the other hand, Odysseus homeland will not grow crops well due to it having so many stones. Odysseus could have also made a new life and home with the Phaeacians, but chooses to continue his journey to Ithaca, his home. Had Odysseus fell trap to each of these things, he would have never returned home. Odysseus was very loyal to his family, his home, and his homeland. (Norton 127-128). Leaving each of these new opportunities to return to something that he has not experienced in ten years and the chance of it not even being there any more, shows a great deal of dedication and love he has for his family.

Odysseus encountered many obstacles on his homecoming journey after the Trojan war. He had to travel across the sea from Troy to Ithaca to even reach his home. Through this voyage, he run into many setbacks. Odysseus was taken captive by Calypso for eight years before Athena helped him escape (Norton 127). When Odysseus reaches the Phaeacians, the horrible one-eyed Cyclops named, Polyphemus tries to serve Odysseus and his men as food. Odysseus has to defeat Polyphemus and continue on his journey to Ithaca. Right after they had set sail again, Odysseus and his crew ended up on another island and were almost eaten by the Laistrygonians. Another obstacle, Odysseus and his crew faced was the year that the crew was turned into pigs. In the span of a year, Odysseus figured out how to change the pigs back into the men. They could continue on the journey now (Homer 178-363). Odysseus continued to press through each obstacle he faced so he could make it back to his home.

Ten years after the end of the Trojan war, Odysseus returned to his home in Ithaca. He faced many trials while on his homecoming journey, but they did not end there. Odysseus had to remain disguised for a while after his arrival to scope out what was taking place in his house. There are suitors in his house that have taken control over it. He has to figure out who he can and cannot trust in his homeland. So many things have changed in the ten years he has been gone. Even though things have changed, including Odysseus, Penelope recognized him even while disguised. Penelope proposes that she will marry anyone who can string Odysseus’ bow and shoot the arrow through a dozen ox heads. This is a feat that she knows Odysseus can only accomplish (Homer 322-466). According to Melissa Mueller with the Texas University Press, the touch and the familiarity with the bow brings Odysseus right back to how things used to be before he had to leave for the Trojan war (Recognition and the Forgotten Senses). He completes the task without any issue and then shoots the opposing suitors. The last obstacle he faced was proposed by his wife. She brings out their bed and she knows if it really is Odysseus then he will know the bed could not be moved. Odysseus passes the test and is happily reunited with his wife and family after 10 long years (Homer 322-466).

Even though this epic was written in the eighth century B.C.E., there are many ways to apply it to daily life. You can see that it was the best for Homer when others that he encountered were hospitable to him and his crew and when he was hospitable to others. Through all of the trials and new opportunities, Odysseus remained loyal and faithful to his wife, family, and home. He loved his family and realized that nothing could be as good as what he already had. Odysseus did not give up on his journey even when he was almost killed many times. He took the journey one day at the time and through much agony, he made it home. He was very elated when he got what he was working towards. If each person would take the same view as Odysseus did then he/she could achieve and complete whatever he/she wanted.

    Overall, Homer’s
_Odyssey_ was an account that marked literature for years to come. Through this story, Homer showed the accounts of a man’s journey home after the Trojan war. Homer showcased the many trials that Homer faced both on the journey and when he returned home to Ithaca. Odysseus never gave up. This story shows one of perseverance, love for family, and how to treat people. Many things can be learned from the

Even though things have changed, including Odysseus, Penelope recognized him even while disguised. Problem set 4

    Total: 20 Points

    1. Identify a healthcare firm with market power. What characteristics led you to choose the
firm that you did? (5 points)

    2. Given the following demand and cost conditions for a monopolistic medical practice,
predict the profit-maximizing price and quantity of services utilized. The cost conditions
are as follows: fixed costs are $200 and marginal costs are $70 per visit. (5 points)

Price ($) Quantity of Visits Demanded
    300 0
    270 1
    240 2

    3. A physician practice serves two groups of patients. One group, with limited insurance,
has demand represented by Demand Schedule A; the other, with comprehensive
insurance, has demand represented by Demand Schedule B in the following table. The
cost to produce a visit is $75. The practice wishes to price discriminate in order to
maximize profit. (1) What price should it charge each patient in group A? What price
should it charge each patient in group B? (3 points) (2) Compare price elasticities of
demand in two groups. Compare profit-maximizing price in two groups. What pattern did
you observe on the relationship between profit-maximizing prices and price elasticities of
    demand? (2 points)

Demand Schedule A Demand Schedule B
Price ($) Number of Visits Price ($) Number of Visits
