**W5 Discussion Instructions:** Quality of Service (QoS)

**In 250 word, answer the 3 questions below with 4 evidence base scholarly articles in APA format.**

Classical IP was designed to provide a "best effort" service in routing traffic through a network. IP does not handle the complexities of QoS (quality of service) associated with different types of services such as delay-insensitive data, delay-sensitive data, packetized voice, and packetized streaming video.  Advanced concepts of QoS classification were introduced in the development of ATM technology by the telecom industry and the ITU in the 1980's.

    1. How does QoS fit in with the evolving Internet, and strive to

    2. Identify important issues such as overlaying and implementing QoS on top of IPv4

    3. Identify important issues such as overlaying and implementing QoS on top of with IPv6.

**In 400 word total, replying to the 2 post below. Each reply must be 200 word.**

    **J.N Post #1**

Quality of service (QoS)- manages network traffic to ensure the performance of applications, it enables a network device to differentiate traffic and then apply different behaviors to traffic.  QoS prioritizes specific types of traffic, such as voice or video, to maintain their quality.  Applications can run on converged, packet-based networks where traffic shares a common infrastructure and network resources.  QoS has the capability of controlling packet loss using random early detection (RED) algorithms, so that the device knows the packets to drop or process.

IPv4 and IPv6 both offer mechanism for implementing QoS, IPv6 has more of a robust and scalable framework. IPv6 has solved some of the troubles of IPv4, introducing Flow Label Field to identify packets belonging to the same flow, enabling more effective traffic management.  Which helps the network identify important data like video calls or gaming, to provide better performance and stability.  Transitioning to IPv6 and fully leveraging its QoS capabilities requires addressing challenges related to compatibility, adoption, and policy management.  Other IPv6 improvement over IPV4 include more efficient routing without fragmenting packets, and built-in Quality of Service that distinguishes delay-sensitive packets, and elimination of NAT to extend address space from 32 to 128 bits.  IPv4 has a small “type of service” field to prioritize traffic, and it’s limited.  IPv4 header has limited space for QoS information and can restrict the granularity of traffic classification and management.

    **D.J Post #2:**

Traditional IP networks operate on a “best effort” model, meaning all data packets are treated equally without prioritization. While this approach was sufficient in the early days of the Internet, modern applications such as video streaming, VoIP (Voice over IP), and online gaming require stricter performance guarantees. These services depend on low latency, minimal jitter, and sufficient bandwidth, making Quality of Service (QoS) essential for ensuring reliable network performance.

QoS encompasses a set of techniques that manage and prioritize network traffic based on specific requirements. The telecom industry first introduced robust QoS mechanisms through Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) in the 1980s, allowing networks to classify and control traffic flows. These principles were later adapted for the Internet through Differentiated Services (DiffServ) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). DiffServ assigns priority levels to packets, enabling routers to handle congestion more efficiently, while MPLS establishes predefined network paths to minimize delays (
_What Is Differentiated Services (DiffServ, or DS)? – Definition from WhatIs.com_, n.d.).

Implementing QoS in IPv4 networks presents challenges due to its limited built-in support for traffic prioritization. IPv6 improves upon this by introducing a Flow Label field, allowing for more efficient packet management (
_IPv6 Quality-of-Service Capabilities (IPv6 Administration Guide)_, n.d.). The implementation of IPv6 has remained slow due to migration complexities and lack of incentive to transition. As the Internet continues to expand, integrating QoS into IPv6 and overlay networks will be critical for maintaining seamless connectivity in an increasingly bandwidth-intensive digital landscape.

Make sure you provide enough detail to your answer to show you understand the

question, simple answers (no detail) or 1 or 2 sentences as answers will be worth very

little. Most answers are about ½ page each at a minimum

    1) We all have heard of “cloud computing”, What is the difference between cloud

computing and client/server computing. What types of resources are used on

each, what kind of applications, and what type of security is supported by each?

    2) Linux has many file systems, one is called a Journaling file system, what are the

advantages and disadvantages of this file system, how large can it be, what is the

impact on the operating system as far as “housekeeping” and are there any

security features. Explain when one would use this file system as a choice over

any other offered on a standard Linux distribution.

    3) Explain the differences between a Master boot record (MBR), Master File Table

(MFT) and Basic Input/output System (BIOS) and a Hardware abstraction layer

(HAL). Are there any similarities or overlapping responsibilities?

    4) What are the differences between a virtual desktop, virtual machine and virtual

server? In what conditions would you use one of the other? Which has the

    largest domain (Pervasiveness) and why?

    5) Of the types of Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), which is the most common?

which is the fastest? which has the longest distance? How do the speeds of DSL

    compare to a T1 line?

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Before you begin this discussion, read this module’s resource about global digital privacy. In your initial post, address the following points:

    – Choose a country from the report.
    – Describe the country’s privacy laws.
    – Discuss the country’s position on protecting private data by moving it out of a country’s jurisdiction.

In your response posts, compare your thoughts with those of your peers.

To complete this assignment, review the [Discussion Rubric](https://learn.snhu.edu/d2l/common/dialogs/quickLink/quickLink.d2l?ou=1831858&type=content&rcode=snhu-3022167).

    RESPONSE ONE

    Hey everyone,

For my report, I chose Canada to examine their privacy framework. In Canada, there are two major laws at the federal level, as well as supplemental regulations at the state level, or provincial level in the case of Canada. The Privacy Act (1985) regulates how the federal government collects, uses, and discloses personal data, ensuring citizens' information is handled responsibly. The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA, 2022) applies to private-sector organizations engaged in commercial activities. PIPEDA requires businesses to obtain informed consent for data collection, grants individuals access to their personal data, and allows them to request its deletion once it has served its purpose. However, businesses can retain anonymized data and, in some cases, disclose information without consent for investigative purposes. Provincial governments enforce additional privacy protections, sometimes overriding PIPEDA when data remains within the province, creating a fragmented regulatory landscape.

As far as information flowing in and out of Canada's jurisdiction, they take a relatively relaxed approach as PIPEDA does not impose strict data localization requirements on private businesses. The general rule of thumb essentially for Canada's privacy framework outside its geographical bounds, is that it relies on the good faith of foreign organizations to have the necessary precautions and safeguards in place to responsibly handle sensitive information and data in general.

    RESPONSE TWO

China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), passed in 2021, is often compared to the GDPR, but it reflects China’s state-centric approach to data privacy. While PIPL gives individuals rights similar to GDPR- such as the right to know, update, and delete their data- it does not limit the state’s ability to access personal information. The government maintains full control over citizen data and can collect it from companies at any time. The law mainly focuses on regulating how companies handle personal data, rather than restricting state access.

PIPL also enforces strict data security measures. Companies must implement strong technical protections, and in the case of a data breach, the data collector is held liable. If a company processes a large amount of data (as determined by the state), it must appoint a data protection officer. Encryption and pseudonymization are encouraged but not strictly defined. However, if data is fully anonymized, PIPL no longer applies.

One of the most significant aspects of PIPL is its strict data localization requirements. Data collected within China must remain in China unless the government explicitly approves its transfer. Foreign companies operating in China must appoint local staff to handle Chinese data within the country. This differs from GDPR, which allows cross-border data transfers under certain conditions. The strict localization rules could impact multinational businesses, as companies that violate PIPL risk being banned from operating in China.

China’s approach to digital privacy highlights the lack of true public privacy. While individuals have some control over how companies use their data, they have no privacy from the government. The state’s broad authority over citizen data raises concerns about mass surveillance and potential misuse, as there are no legal barriers preventing government access. This state-first approach differs from privacy laws in democratic countries, where laws aim to balance national security with individual rights.

China’s privacy laws highlight its emphasis on state control and national security, ensuring that personal data stays within its jurisdiction while still holding businesses accountable for data protection- though at the cost of true personal privacy form government oversight.
