    ### Week 3 Dialogue: Human Population Growth

This week your Discussion Board will center on human population growth. I want you to find the K value, i.e., the carrying capacity, of earth for humans. Then I want you to choose some interesting aspects of this topic related to the K value to write about, e.g., Do humans exhibit a typical growth curve? Where are we on the growth curve, i.e. how close are we to the K value? Is there anything we can do about it? What are some things we might do now to slow down the advance into the death phase? What were some of the causes of death phase in segments of the human population in the past?

Please use at least 250 words.

    **## WEEK3BIOL250ASSIGNMENT.docx**

For your practical application this week, we will look into an actual scientific study- the field studies of T. Scott SilIett on pages 230 and 231 of your text. After reading about and understanding what Sillett did, you will write a scientific paper describing the field study. For this assignment, imagine that you did the work, and you are preparing a manuscript to submit to a scientific journal for publication. Don't say things like "Sillett said this" or "Sillett did that"; rather pretend that you did the work, and you are the only author. Write in third person, e.g., it was done; the data reveals; it may be concluded that…. etc. We will follow one of the most common manuscript styles that is used by many scientific journals. Divide your paper into the following sections and type the section names in bold (as I have done) at the beginning of each section.

    1.
**Title:** Make up a descriptive title appropriate for an experiment producing the data in Figure 3.

    2.
**Author:** Your name (not Sillett- we are pretending that you are the researcher)

    3.
**Abstract:** An abstract is a mini-summary of the paper in a few sentences.

    4.
**Introduction:** In the Introduction you introduce background information leading up to this experiment and the reason for doing the experiment.

    5
**. Methods:** In the methods you describe how you did the experiment.

    6
**. Results:** Your results are as in Figure 3, page 231 of your text. These will be your actual results. Include a photo of the graph in Figure 3 in your paper. If you don't already have a screen capture app on your computer, you can take a picture with your phone, send it to yourself, and insert it in your Word doc or you can download a free screen snip app from Microsoft.com.

    7.
**Discussion:** Here you discuss your results explaining what the data mean, the significance of the data, conclusions, and where you might go from here.

    8.
    **References:** In standard APA style.

You can look at the instructions in Week 1 and in the syllabus for what to submit and what is expected. It is okay to work in groups if you like, to discuss with friends, or do the work alone as you prefer, but you should write up your own paper for submission.

    ### Week 4 Dialogue: Parasitism and Mutualism

There are many interesting examples of parasitism and mutualism in which there exists a very specific interactions between two very specific species. Some of these interactions are so specific and so intertwined between the two species that they cannot exist without one another. This creates a chicken and egg problem for evolution by natural selection because both species must be present in order for them to survive and reproduce, and survival and reproduction is necessary for natural selection to occur. Choose one of these many very interesting species interactions, describe it in detail, and present it to your classmates. Presentation in detail requires the insertion of a picture or diagram illustrating key structural features of the interaction as well as verbal description of the interaction.

As AI tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Jasper become increasingly common in academic settings, the line between “assistance” and “automation” is getting blurry. Many students use these platforms for writing, summarizing, or even generating full papers — but that raises important ethical and academic questions.
How can we ensure AI remains a supportive tool instead of replacing genuine human thought? Should universities update their policies to define acceptable AI usage in research and coursework? And more importantly, how can tutors and educators detect the difference between well-assisted and AI-generated content without discouraging innovation?
I’d love to hear opinions from both students and academic professionals on how we can build a balanced approach — one that keeps education honest, while still embracing technological progress.
