    CAS Standards Presentation

    General Instructions

The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is a consortium of
professional associations that work to promote the improvement of programs and services in the
College Student Affairs profession. This organization publishes a book entitled "CAS
Professional Standards for Higher Education" that outlines the standards for practice and
preparation for each of the functional areas of Student Affairs (i.e., Housing, Counseling
Services, Career Services, Academic Advising, Greek Life, etc.). Every Student Affairs
professional should be familiar with the mission, goals, learning outcomes, ethics, and other
related standards of the specific student affairs area in which they work. The CAS Standards
    provide such information.

As part of your concentration area portfolio (i.e., Housing, Academic Advising, Career Services,
etc.), develop a PowerPoint presentation outlining the major points of the CAS Standards
aligned to your assigned concentration area. Develop the PowerPoint for a group of
professionals who work in a department within the concentration area, with the goal of
educating them on the CAS Standards for that specific Student Affairs department.

Include the following components in your presentation:

    • Mission
    • Program Components
    • Leadership Responsibilities
    • Human Resources
    • Ethics
    • Diversity, Equity, and Access Issues
    • Institutional and External Relations
    • Technology
    • Facilities and Equipment
    • Assessment and Evaluation

Note: The UWA library has an electronic copy of the CAS Standards Manual that you can
access. You may contact a UWA librarian for assistance if needed.

SA501 Graduate Students: Include 10-12 slides in the presentation.

SAL401 Undergraduate Students: Include 7-8 slides in the presentation.

    Format Guidelines:

    • Create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation consisting of a maximum of 7 lines of text
per slide (this is to prevent "information overload" on slides). Use 20-point font or larger
for readability. Remember that the purpose of a PowerPoint presentation is not to use
lots of text but to use bullet points and graphics to convey information.

    • Presentations should be creative, visually appealing, and include technology (i.e.,
YouTube videos, digital images, etc.). Please avoid using Microsoft Word “clip art”
    images.

    • Students should use APA, 7th ed. formatting to cite all sources.

    **MWP #3**

    **Mind Map Instructions**

**Purpose:** Mapping out your ideas helps with the writing process, and for some, seeing that process visually helps with organization. Before diving into writing, you will spend some time collecting your thoughts and how those thoughts function in your essay.

**Assignment:** Create a power point that is a visual representation of your thoughts/ brainstorming activity.

**Constraints:** You will create a 6-slide power point that establishes a visual flow chart of your essay. The power point will need to include the following:

    Title Page (slide #1)

    Selected imagine (Slide #2)

    Introduction (slide #3)

    3 key terms (slides #4, #5, #6)

    Conclusion (slide #7)

    Works Cited page (slide #8)

**Complete your Brainstorming activity found within the essay instruction before you attempt this assignment.**

**Components (Note: Complete Components in this Order)**

**Key Terms:** First work on the body of your essay (labeled Key Terms there should be 3 for this essay); doing so helps you focus your ideas before attacking the introduction or your thesis. Your key terms should flow in order, whether that be (Chronologically, Logical, or by Importance). The order you choose should, in some way, link itself to the next key term. You should write a minimum of
**three-four sentences** about each key term.
**Note: The key terms should only be one or two words.**

**Conclusion:** After you have your key terms in order, focus on what you want, the reader to take away from your essay. (The Conclusion). Write
**three sentences** with your reader in mind. What are you trying to help the reader understand, take on as their own beliefs, and or what do you want the reader to do with the information you have provided?

**Introduction:** Your introduction is a way to help the reader understand what the main idea is of your essay, or what your essay will be comprised of. Think of your reader as a person who knows nothing about what you have learned or read about. Meaning provide background information about the major subject, here you should provide a minimum of
    **four sentences**.

**Thesis:** Your thesis should do two things, help the reader transition from your introduction into the body of your essay, and support the ways you have chosen to argue your main idea. Your thesis should include your key terms and be presented in the same order you have selected for Stewart-Steele 2

your body paragraphs (Chronologically, Logical, or Importance). Your thesis should be only
    **one or two sentences.**

**Research:** You should be using your knowledge for this essay.
**DO NOT use google** to gain information. If you need to further your knowledge you can obtain Scholarly journals/ articles from the following approved search engines; Jstor, and library. I have provided you with these links within the menu tab of our blackboard course forum. Make sure to keep notes of your research for both in text citations and a work cited page.

**Explanatory Synthesis of an Ethical Perspective on a**

    **Cultural or Ethnic Group**

**Weight**: 20% of the Final Grade

**Length and Formatting:** 6-8 pages, typed, double-spaced, with a left-justified margin, black 12-point, Times New Roman font, written in 3rd person.

**Brainstorming for the Essay:** Think about essays one and two write a few sentences about what Ethical Perspectives are at play in and among Social Circles, Communities, Education, and Employment within those essays. Next, in one sentence try to flesh out what Ethical Perspective Trevor Noah is pointing out, and what are the main points with which he seemed to want to leave readers. (Remember this is not a book report, you are using Trevor Noah as a starting point to help ground and provide evidence for your Synthesis.) Then, underneath each sentence list the evidence provided by each of the writers such as: examples? Numeric data? Or Something else?

**Assignment:** What is an ethical position that the population should adopt, on the role of cultural activism in relationship to formal or informal situations among Racial Group Dominance and Subordination? Consider: The value of how social circles among cultures work, how communities view cultural activism that is not of their own native origin, how educational and employment opportunities differ.

There is not one definitive answer here, but a range of possible positions, each of which may affect how we see and treat people who continue to survive in a socially controversial world. For example, the position that the majority population takes on this topic may influence the level of respect that your readers give to people who learn how to deal with different cultures. Or the position that you propose may ultimately influence the value with which many of your peers continue forming their own social circles, communities, education, or employment.

    · As you write your paper, you should give specific evidence from 3 of the (individual chapters) within Trevor Noah.

    · You should provide what the perspectives are within social circles, communities, education, or employment; the perspectives may overlap with one or more of the works that you cite, but even so, the highlighted position should come across clearly.

    · Include one visual to illustrate your own perspective.

**Audience:** Imagine that your paper will be read by local city leaders who can influence the higher education and job training options in Houston. These leaders are studying the perspectives of community members like you before they do further research and then make recommendations to local leaders in education, business, and industry about the kinds of postsecondary education and/or job training to support in the coming years.

**Research:** If you choose to obtain outside sources you are limited to 2 sources only. Do not use Google. Resources that can be used for this assignment should only be comprised of in-class text, Jstor, or the Library. If you choose to utilize quotes from these sources for this paper, you will need to make sure you are introducing the quote or quotes correctly, make sure that it is absolutely necessary to have the author's words exactly and not your own words.

**Rationale:** Accurately and respectfully synthesizing other people’s texts is a large part of working with complex ideas and identifying your own position in relation to others’ ideas marks you as a discerning thinker and writer. These are among the skills that you will continue refining in ENGL 1302 and beyond. Additionally, this assignment gives you your most formal audience yet, and in doing so, the assignment forces you to polish your prose by the time you complete your final draft. Many, though not all, college and professional writing situations will require a writing tone that is formal but not stuffy. With Paper #3, you can practice using that tone.

**My Decision to Pursue the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Specialty**

Choosing a nursing specialty within the MSN program required significant reflection on my professional experiences, values, and future goals. After working for several years in intensive and intermediate care units, I realized that my greatest passion lies in managing acutely ill adults and older adults with complex health conditions. This motivated me to pursue the
**Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP)** track at Walden University. This specialty aligns with my desire to enhance my clinical expertise, exercise advanced decision-making skills, and assume leadership roles in the acute care setting. I believe that advanced education will strengthen my ability to provide holistic, evidence-based care to critically ill patients while promoting interprofessional collaboration and continuity of care.

Initially, deciding on a specialty was not easy. I explored both the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) programs due to their broad scope and versatility. However, I realized that the fast-paced, technology-driven environment of acute care best fits my skills and professional interests. As Bickford et al. (2015) emphasized, aligning one’s nursing practice with established standards and competencies ensures that nurses function within their full potential while maintaining professional integrity. Similarly, Walden University (n.d.) emphasizes that choosing the right specialty allows nurses to translate their prior clinical experience into advanced roles that improve patient and system-level outcomes. My decision was also driven by the growing need for acute care nurse practitioners to manage the increasing complexity of the aging population and chronic disease burden in hospital settings.

A professional organization that closely aligns with this specialty is the
**American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)**. AACN offers extensive resources for continuing education, certification preparation, and professional networking for nurses in acute and critical care. Membership involves submitting an online application and selecting the appropriate category—student, active, or affiliate. Members gain access to educational materials, journals, and national conferences that support leadership and advocacy in critical care (Echevarria, 2018). Through AACN, I plan to continue developing my professional identity, stay current with evidence-based practice standards, and contribute to the advancement of acute care nursing.

In conclusion, pursuing the AG-ACNP specialty is both a professional and personal commitment to advancing the quality of care for complex adult and geriatric patients. This path integrates my critical care background, passion for learning, and aspiration to influence positive change within the healthcare system.

    Julian,

I, too, am pursuing the AGACNP pathway. I also was debating between the FNP and AGACNP paths, but as you described the AGACNP path offers more opportunity for care of critically ill adult patients. You make an excellent point about AGACNP allowing more leadership opportunities. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners describes how more critical care and specialty units are turning to AGACNPs for leadership roles and clinical expertise (Jackson et al., 2023). This aligns with your career goals of providing acute care in leadership positions, making the AGACNP pathway a good choice.

Your description of the AACN is complete and accurate. Are you a current member? If not, I would recommend that you join. I am a member and take advantage of their CEs including digital seminars and articles to stay current and evidence-based in my bedside practice. This will be especially beneficial to us as novice APPs so that we can become more familiar with current practices in our chosen fields. AACN's commitment to evidence-based, current practices allows for nurses and nurse practitioners to demonstrate competence through evidence-based learning exercises and providing resources through their historical logs (Dugan & Altmiller, 2023). This will remain a resource for us to use for both clinical practice and decision-making.

Looking forward to future classes with you!

    Lauren

    **Whitney’s Response to Julian:**

    Hello Julian,

Your reflection on choosing the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) specialty is both insightful and inspiring. I admire how clearly you connected your clinical experience in intensive and intermediate care settings with your professional aspirations. It is evident that you have chosen a path that aligns with your passion for managing acutely ill adults and older adults, which is central to improving outcomes for complex patient populations.

I especially appreciate your acknowledgment that this decision required significant reflection and self-assessment. Many nurses face similar challenges when narrowing their focus within advanced practice roles, and your reasoning demonstrates strong professional maturity. Your emphasis on the fast-paced, technology-driven nature of acute care highlights your awareness of where your skills and motivation are best utilized. This self-awareness is essential for success in advanced nursing practice.

Your reference to Bickford, Marion, and Gazaway (2015) was particularly appropriate. Their emphasis on aligning one’s practice with established standards and competencies reinforces that your decision is grounded in both professional ethics and evidence-based frameworks. Furthermore, your point about the aging population and increasing chronic disease burden reflects a deep understanding of the healthcare system’s current challenges and the vital role AG-ACNPs play in addressing them.

I also agree with your choice to join the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). As Echevarria (2018) notes, professional organizations foster essential connections that strengthen leadership, promote continuing education, and build a strong professional identity. The AACN provides an exceptional platform for collaboration, advocacy, and ongoing learning, which will undoubtedly enhance your development as an advanced practice nurse.

While my own focus is on the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) role, I recognize that both specialties share a foundation in holistic, evidence-based care. However, your decision to remain in acute care demonstrates a commendable dedication to a challenging yet deeply impactful area of practice. I have no doubt that your advanced education will empower you to lead and advocate effectively within critical care environments.

**Week 04 Assignment 02 Capstone Project Literature Review**

Please submit an 12 page literature review containing a focused accumulation and progression of research directly relevant to your previously-approved capstone project topic and APUS program objectives. Your reference list must include a minimum of 10-12 references, all of which must be cited at least once within text using APA style. Your literature review needs to be written in third person prose and contain a systematic evaluation of the available literature (not an annotated bibliography) which leads to logical conclusions based on published data and also include some preliminary unique personal suggestions for future research. Your scientific writing and referencing skills on the three remaining SPHS697 assignments (Literature Review, Creative Project Outline, Final Creative Project Manuscript) need to be at the same level of scientific rigor and professionalism as the peer-review literature you are using I your research.

Please note that about 50% of students include an abbreviated research design which is often a "first draft" for a specific future submission to an IRB committee which is intended to take their line of capstone research to the next level. Students who choose to include a detailed research design most often intend to collect data following their APUS graduation as part of their current employment or doctoral studies, and/or in future coaching, teaching, administrative, or consulting endeavors. Many students who include a specific research design intend to write a future grant proposal highlighting why their specific research ideas help advance knowledge within their chosen SPHS subdiscipline and are thus worthy of consideration by a funding agency.

    ## Topic: Enhancing Athletic Performance Through Smart Nutrition Tracking and Personalized Recovery Plans

Plan: The purpose of my project is to develop an evidence-based framework that combines wearable technology, nutrition tracking, and recovery coaching to help athletes improve their performance and overall health. Here’s how I plan to carry it out:

    1.
**Initial Assessment-** I will create a sample athlete intake process that includes body composition analysis, dietary intake surveys, and goal-setting worksheets. This step will establish a baseline for individualized nutrition and performance tracking.

    2.
**Technology Integration-** I will then demonstrate how data from wearable devices such as Fitbit, Ifit, or Garmin can be synchronized with a nutrition app to monitor key metrics (heart rate variability, sleep quality, hydration, and calorie expenditure). Using mock or sample data, I will show how these inputs can guide daily meal timing, nutrient balance, and hydration recommendations.

    3.
**Education and Coaching Component-** I also plan to create a series of educational workshop material that focus on recovery, nutrient timing, and sleep hygiene. Motivational interviewing techniques will be included to encourage sustainable behavior change among athletes.

    4.
**Final Deliverables-** My final paper submission will include a research-based report (with literature review, program framework, and data interpretation), an example athlete dashboard prototype, and a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the project outcomes and proposed implementation steps.

This project ties directly to the SPHS program objectives by integrating science, technology, and health education. It also demonstrates leadership through the design of a multidisciplinary performance enhancement program that promotes long-term athlete wellness.
