Reference Information: Scanzoni, John (2001). From the Normal Family to Alternate
Families to the Quest for Diversity With Interdependence, Journal or Family Issues, vol.
    22 No. 6, September 2001, 688710.

Purpose of Study: To look at the changes and the diversity of the households from the
late 1960’s to present, both from the constructionist and the functionalistic view.  And
figuring out which family style works the best to meet both the family and societies
    needs.

Sampling Comments: Otto (1970), “man can create marriage and family possibilities
uniquely suited to his time, place and situation.”  Sussman and Cogswell (1972)
“…adults must live for themselves and not only for their children.”  The standard family
(nuclear) stifled mutual confidant between mates.  Single parenting was viewed as a
temporary condition, which would resolve when the parent remarried, thus it wasn’t seen
    as a “real” family.

Measures: The standard family (or nuclear family) was faired to the different variant
families such as single parents, homosexual, multimarriages, and getting pregnant out of
wedlock.  Scanzoni reviewed and summarized the functionalist and constructionalist
models and theories starting from post World War II to the present.

Findings/Results/Main Points: Functionalists support the model that views a new
standard family were previous traditional roles are in place while the children are young
in order to promote optimal child development.  Scanzoni’s research found that
developmentalists believe that it is more the lifelong encounters between a child’s genetic
makeup, personality and social context and not just the first few years of life.  While the
functionalists want to exclude the community, the constructionalists believe that the
community makes the family. “Families are produced and created by the actions of
persons operating within the social structure and cultural milieu that surrounds them
(Maines, 2000).”  They also believe that if the community views a groups as not
mainstream than that group is likely not to succeed.

Conclusion:  While one believes that negotiations build a stronger family and community
the other does not believe in negotiation of any type.  The citizens that feel the
neostandard model is better state they would have a hard time fairing up.  This selfdoubt
along with lack of support may stifle their innovations.  Most citizens admit to wanting
the neostandard model for themselves and their children but are willing to accept the
reality of the variant family.  “Because there is no best family pattern to stray from, there
can be no variants that are invariably judged as lesser.  Then and only then have we taken
the first step toward embracing genuine diversity, (Scanzoni 1989).”  To date there is no
one household model that is flawless but household variety has been found to enrich the
family.  Household diversity with interdependence that builds a strong sense of
community has been found to be healthy.

We have covered several areas of research that have prompted various levels of controversy, and for various reasons. You have read about the possible comorbidity of ADHD and bipolar disorders in children. You have also read about genetics research in psychological disorders. How might this knowledge impact your personal behavior or thinking about the disorders themselves or the people they affect? While these topics can certainly raise multiple ethical questions, consider each of them from a psychological information and literacy perspective. What information would you want to know as the parent of a child with ADHD or bipolar disorder? If you are the spouse or partner of someone with a psychological disorder, how might the knowledge of genetic contributions impact decisions to have children, or what might you want to be mindful of in the children you already have? Several research studies have been cited and summarized in this chapter. If you wanted to look beyond your text, what sources of information would be most useful to you in trying to learn more about a possible disorder or the contribution of genetics? Where would you find or obtain those sources? What would you look for in each? What are some characteristics of objective data, as opposed to personal reports? Do you know how to interpret a graph or chart? How do you determine if the information is relevant? Can it be generalized to your current situation? — of 1 point Thinking Critically 14.3 After reviewing the questions raised in the last paragraph above, identify at least two information sources you would pursue and what data you would want to get from them..

Excessive sugar in diet remains a health concern due to its close association with chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, liver disease and cardiovascular diseases. Due to its health risks, it calls for the question as to whether added sugars should be regulated in food supply or not. From my perspective, added sugars should be regulated in the food supply chain due to associated health risks. Some strategies to regulation include requiring all producers to clearly label the amount of added sugars in the packages of their products to allow consumers make informed choices. The other strategy is to limit the marketing of sweetened beverages, such as soda as best products for children. Manufacturers can also be incentivized to reformulate products with zero sugar or low sugar content to ensure a healthy population. Regulation of added sugars in food supply can ensure healthy conscious manufacturers that prioritize a healthy population.

The responsibility of cost of care to treat chronic disease due to complications associated from consuming much added sugar should be shared between the consumers and the food industry. The food industry bears the greatest burden in shaping consumer choices through marketing, pricing and availability of added sugar products. Consumers, on the other hand, have the responsibility to make healthy choices regarding what diet they consume. Hence, the food industry should bear the greatest burden of cost of care due to their great influence in the food environment through marketing practices used to sell added sugar products (Houghtaling et al., 2021). They can reduce this cost through supporting public health initiatives and nutrition education that champions the consumption of foods with low sugar content. When consumers are aware of the risks of consuming high amounts of added sugars, they can make informed choices, leading to increased preference and purchase for low sugar content foods.

While the consumption of added sugars may be harmful, it may be beneficial to specific populations or disease states. For example, carbohydrate-rich foods and sugar-sweetened beverages, such as energy drinks may be beneficial for athletes, as they engage in lengthy high-intensity exercises that require a lot of energy, preventing fatigue (Erdmann et al., 2021). When timed appropriately with activity, added sugars have been shown to support athletes’ performance and recovery. In clinical settings, hypoglycemic patients may require quick sources of glucose for energy to compensate for the low glucose levels in the body. Therefore, while added sugars may be harmful to the a significant proportion of the population, special considerations should be made in diet planning, especially for specific populations, such as athletes and specific disease states like in hypoglycemic patients. However, these considerations can only be made with the help of a nutritionist to ensure the individual or patient consumes the right amount of sugars without posing a health risk or severe complication of a disease state.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    – ## 760….docx

    **## 760….docx**

Provide a strategy that is appropriate for addressing either a proposed practice problem you introduced in your NU 760 course or
**a** proposed practice problem you will want to address in your current practice setting.

For this assignment, if you have feedback from a previous assignment, you will use that feedback along with any comments from your faculty on your proposed strategy to create a presentation. This presentation should be designed as part of your “pitch” to a project stakeholder group.

It’s important to note that this presentation should not be created as if you are presenting to your course faculty. Instead, imagine you are speaking directly to the stakeholders in your practice setting and aim to gain their support and approval for implementing your project. This distinction is essential—please be sure to follow this instruction carefully.

Create a succinct, professional, recorded presentation that provides the following information:

    **The Practice Problem**

    · Present the practice problem you have identified for the focus of your proposed student DNP project or a proposed graduate scholarship project – supported with a very brief overview of the data/observations that support the problem identification (1 to 2 slides)

    **Strategy/Intervention**

    · Define the strategy/intervention you selected for the project (2 to 4 slides)

    · Provide your audience with a brief overview of the strategy/intervention

    · If your strategy/intervention is an application of evidence-based practice – ensure that you provide your audience with a brief overview of the literature that supports the selection of the strategy/intervention

    · If your strategy/intervention is an innovation – ensure that you provide your audience an explanation that your review of the literature did not reveal an appropriate evidence-based practice strategy/intervention, and that innovation is needed

    **Rationale**

    · Provide a rationale for why you believe the selected strategy/intervention is the best fit for the practice setting (2 to 4 slides)

    · Correlate the main elements of the strategy to the improvement needs identified

    **Implementation Plan**

    · A brief overview of the plan for implementing the strategy/intervention in the practice setting – include in the plan the resources that will be required (e.g. human, fiscal, material, etc.) and the proposed timeframe for implementation

    Reminders

    · Do not create a recording where you are simply reading the information verbatim from your slides.

    · Graduate-level scholarship requires that your presentation demonstrate both your confidence and command of knowledge relative to the problem, your proposed strategy/intervention, and a brief overview of the highlights of the Plan phase of the PDSA cycle.

    · Be sure to rehearse your presentation and ensure you are satisfied with it before you submit the assignment. Your recorded presentation should
**not exceed 6 to 8 minutes.**

    Immigration: Understanding America’s Real Issues

Immigration has been one of America’s most pressing problems, a source of economic strain and social friction. Many claim that immigrants drain our sources, take the jobs and endanger the security of others, but they seem to overlook how immigrants enriches the culture and even sustains economic growth therefore reveals itself as fundamental source of strength. Therefore the most serious issue is not immigration, but the failure to recognize the benefits it brings to the economy, its skill injection to the community and the native connection to American ideals of freedom.

Immigration: Is It Our Most Serious Issue

_Journal of African Foreign Affairs_, vol. 6, no. 1, Apr. 2019, pp. 165-80.

This article explores the primary motives behind Nigerian migration to the United States, arguing that it is not just desperation but a calculated “quest for career development” and societal status through education. Its objective, data driven perspective provides a credible counterpoint to alarmist immigration narratives. The source will be used to argue that immigration is a source of skilled talent, leveraging its statistics on the high professional success of Nigerian Americans to demonstrate that immigration is not inherently a crisis but can be a significant benefit.

The article argues that immigration is a crucial economic solution, not a problem. He also says that increased immigration is essential to reduce labor shortages, curb inflation, and support an aging domestic workforce. It is subjective and presents a specific argument, but it is backed by economic data and expert analysis. This source provides a strong counterpoint to the narrative that immigration is solely a burden. The plan is to use its economic arguments to challenge the insinuation that immigration is a "serious issue" in a negative sense, instead framing it as a potential economic benefit.

    Somin, Ilya. "Immigration and Freedom."
_The Cato Institute_, 12 May 2022

This blog post makes an argument that restrictive immigration policies are a violation of individual freedoms for those trying to immigrate and for citizens who wish to interact with them. The source was published by the libertarian Cato Institute, so it has a clear political perspective, arguing for minimal government restrictions. While subjective, it introduces a unique dimension to the debate beyond economics and security. This source will be useful for analysis because it expands the definition of what makes an issue "serious." It will be used to argue that if freedom is a core American value, then the restriction of it through immigration policy is indeed a serious philosophical and constitutional issue.

    Outline for Editorial Essay:

Beyond the Border: Reframing Immigration as an American Strength

    Introduction

    · The debates over immigration in America are often pictured around narratives of crisis and conflict, with newcomers showed as threats to the nation’s very fabric.

    · Dominant rhetoric commonly holds immigrants responsible for economic burden, job market crowding , and cultural dilution.

    · This perspective, however, ignores the documented ways in which immigrants fortify the nation’s economy, fuel its innovation, and embody its founding spirit.

    · Thesis Statements: The main challenge is not immigrant, but a narrative that obscures the truth; immigrants are vital contributors to America’s economic dynamism, and the very renewal of its core values of opportunity and resilience.

Paragraph 1-Economic Engine and Labor Force Vitality

    · Immigrants are a key pillar of the American economy, as they pursue essential employment opportunities in significant fields.

    · They form the backbone of industries in agriculture, hospitality, and construction and perform jobs which are essential yet often rejected by native-born individuals.

    · Beyond labor, immigrants are entrepreneurs, starting small businesses at high rates and contributing hundreds of billions in tax revenue that supports public services for all.

    · Immigrants are not economic drains, but rather an active stimulant and stabilizer of the economy.

**Paragraph 2 – Catalysts for Innovation and Competitiveness**

    · American innovation is powered through the infusion of global talent and diverse perspectives fueled by immigration.

    · A disproportionate number of America's most successful tech startups and Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children.

    · Immigrants also bridge the shortage in the most critical gaps in STEM fields, health care, and academia that will continue to keep the United States competitive on the world stage.

    · This reflects the reality that attracting global talent is not a concession but a strategic necessity for national progress.

**Body Paragraph 3 – Reinforcing the American Ideological Fabric**

    · Immigration is not antithetical to American identity; it is a continuous reaffirmation of it.

    · The journey of an immigrant, rooted in the pursuit of liberty, safety, and prosperity, is a contemporary reenactment of the American Dream.

    · This continuous renewal from different cultures prevents stagnation at a national level and creates a more flexible, open-minded society.

    · Thus, immigrants are not a challenge to American values but are their most ardent practitioners.

    **Counterargument and Rebuttal**

    · Opponents contend that immigration suppresses wages for native workers and puts pressure on public resources, increasing crime.

    · Empirical evidence, however, consistently shows that immigration has a neutral-to-positive effect on wages and that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens.

    · The strain on resources is usually a result of policy failure in distribution and investment, not the presence of immigrants themselves.

    · These common arguments thus crumble upon close examination, revealing themselves as myths that prevent constructive policy.

    **Proposed Solution and Path Forward**

    · The solution calls for a fundamental policy shift from deterrence to integration and channeling human potential.

    · This would involve creating clearer pathways to citizenship, expanding visa programs for essential workers, and investing in community-based support systems for new arrivals.

    · Such a rational and humane system would maximize the benefits of immigration while addressing logistical challenges.

    · Embracing this approach will enable America to tap into the full potential of its immigrant population, securing its future as a dynamic and inclusive nation.

    **Conclusion**

    · The evidence is clear: the narrative of immigration as a problem is a profound and costly misconception.

    · The real assets immigrants bring—economic vitality, innovative capacity, and cultural resilience—are indispensable to America's continued prosperity.

    · Moving away from fear-based rhetoric to an evidence-based perspective is crucial for creating effective policy.

    · By finally recognizing immigration as the strength it has always been, America can fully honor its legacy as a nation of immigrants and secure a more vibrant future.
