    **Week 6 (C.7) Forum (Ash)**

    **Part A**

In your first post for Chapter 7s forum, read the three scenarios below and answer the accompanying questions:

**Scenario 1:** A child is counting a collection of shells and begins by touching each shell as the number is said. After eight, the child continues to count but faster so the counting is not in a matched relationship with the shells.

    · What skill does the child lack?

    · What techniques or activities would you use to help develop this skill?

    · Why is a one-to-one correspondence necessary?

**Scenario 2**:  You are a kindergarten teacher teaching math with hands-on materials. You have several parents who are pressuring you to give children traditional worksheets and practice dittos so the parents have firm “evidence” that math is being taught.

    · How would you respond?

    · What plans would you make so that this issue doesn’t come up again?

**Scenario 3:** You are setting up your four-year old classroom a few weeks before the school year begins.  Traditionally, your classrooms has been well stocked with learning materials purchased from Kaplan, Discount School Supply, or other educational companies.

Your center director has decided that all plastic materials must be removed from the classroom and that only natural materials may be used.  You must find or purchase materials to replace the plastic learning materials.

    · Where will you search for natural, loose parts, materials to add to the learning environment.  Consider thrift stores, donation possibilities, and other creative ideas. Create a list of possible sources for these type of materials.

    · For the math center in your classroom, create a comprehensive list of natural, loose parts, materials that you will add.

    · For the dramatic play center, create a comprehensive list of natural, loose parts, materials that you will add.

    **Part B**

    **Wk 6 Superhero Play Discussion**

As you learned during the reading assignments for this week, there are many types of play including pretend or dramatic play.  As children pretend to be someone or something else, they are using many cognitive skills including memory, recall, interpretation, problem solving, comparisons, and so much more.  Quite often young children will engage in superhero play.  That's what you will explore for this forum assignment.  Follow the instructions as outlined below.

Step 1:  Learn more about superhero play through research.

    · To start your journey, read this article published by NAEYC titled, The Science of Superheros:
    [https://www.naeyc.org/resources/pubs/tyc/feb2015/science-superheroesLinks to an external site.](https://www.naeyc.org/resources/pubs/tyc/feb2015/science-superheroes)

    · After reading this article, conduct research {search online and/or in the library} on Superhero play.  A quick google search on "superhero play" will generate many resources that you may use.  Research specifically to find the reasons for superhero play, the benefits of this type of play, as well as any challenges or concerns about superhero play.  You will use this information in Steps 2 and 3 of this assignment.

Step 2:  Create your classroom (or school) policy on superhero play.

    · Write a professional policy that references your research.  Your policy must describe what superhero play is, the benefits and concerns about this type of play, and how it will be permitted in your program.  The policy must be very specific and contain clear references to your research from step 1.

Step 3:  Design two superhero learning activities for preschool or young school aged children.

    · Each activity must be developmentally appropriate, must enhance a child's creativity, and must reflect your research for step 1.

    · Use the learning activity form attached here for each activity:

STEM, ROBOTICS, CODING, AND MAKER’S SPACES OVERVIEW ASSIGNMENT
    INSTRUCTIONS

    OVERVIEW
Maker’s spaces and personal manufacturing present a fascinating future for education with some
tantalizing possibilities. The barriers to adoption are real but worth overcoming for the potential
benefits. STEM, Robots, Codes, and Maker’s Spaces are increasingly ubiquitous in the
    educational experience in classrooms.
For this assignment, you will explore each of these four initiatives from the perspective of your
own local community so that you can inform others in your locale of the resources available to
them. Seek knowledge and resources most appropriate to the interests and needs of your own
work setting, colleagues, and potential users/learners.
    INSTRUCTIONS
Using the provided STEM, Robotics, Coding, and Maker’s Spaces Overview Template and
knowledge gleaned from current scholarly articles, you will write a 2-3 paragraph introduction
and then provide a brief overview of each of the four initiatives. Then, you will respond to each of
the follow-up questions in the template for each initiative, discussing the significance, barriers,
practices, and implications for teaching and learning. You must reference scholarly sources to
support your claims throughout the template.
For resources in your geographical area, check local libraries, school websites, universities, or
other community resources to identify what is available to you . Seek as many hands-on facilities
as you can find; you should try to avoid digital-only sources, if possible. The template will ask
you to include a one-sentence description and link for at least one resource for each initiative.
Pursue local resources in your own community first. If none are found, broaden your search to
surrounding locations to identify the closest resources to you for each initiative.
Include a minimum of two scholarly references for each initiative for a total of at least eight
sources. Each source should be relevant to the given initiative and published within the last five
years. Follow current APA style for citing your sources, both in-text and within the references
    section.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

Using the ECE660 Week 2 Action Research Proposal Literature Evaluation

Template (ATTACHED) similar to the one you used in the discussion this week,

complete the below requirements. Keep in mind, in your final action research

proposal, you will convert the information you added to the tables in the template

    into paragraph form.

    • Select two scholarly, credible, or peer-reviewed full-text articles related to

your area of focus and research questions.

o You may use the article you reviewed in the discussion this week as

one of the two resources required for review and evaluation.

    • Summarize your area of focus and the associated problem statement or

situation for your action research proposal.

    • Restate your research question.

    Part 1: Article Summary Tables

For each of the two articles, complete one table with the following information

below. Each section must be completed and relevant information related to the

    article.

    • CRAAP Test: Evaluate each article for currency, relevancy, authority,

    accuracy, and purpose.

o Provide the overall score and a narrative with a summary of your

    evaluation.

    • Title, Author, Year: Provide an accurate title, author, and year of publication.

    • RefWorks Link: Include the link to the location of the article saved in your

    RefWorks account.

    • Purpose of the Study: Explain the purpose of the study.

    • Subject/Participants: Discuss the subjects or participants involved in the

    study.

    • Variables: Identify the independent and dependent variables in the study.

    • Quantitative and/or Qualitative Instruments: Examine the instruments used

to collect data, including any pertinent information on the validity and

    reliability of the instruments.

    • Interventions: Summarize the interventions used in the study to improve a

situation or existing challenge that the research addressed.

    • Outcomes/Results: Explain what kind of evidence is used to support his/her

    claims.

    • Implications: Examine the implications and conclusions of the study.

    • Relevance to Proposed Study: Appraise how the study relates to the

challenge or situation you are interested in improving in your action research

    proposal.

    Part 2: Literature Evaluation Table

Complete the summary table after completing each of the article summary tables.

The purpose of this table is for you to synthesize information from the articles you

reviewed to determine how each one will inform your own action research

proposal, specifically focusing in the interventions and qualitative and quantitative

    instruments.

    • Literature Evaluation Table: Use the literature evaluation table to organize

your decisions regarding which interventions and instruments are the most

relevant to your own action research proposal, based on your two article

    summaries.

Part 3: Relevance, Terms and Application

    • Identify one early childhood theory that could be used to support your

    proposal.

    • Define research related terms.

    • Describe what intervention you would suggest and why.

    Research and Resource Expectations

    • A minimum of two scholarly, credible or peer-reviewed sources, in addition

to the course textbook, are required.

    Next Steps

    • Review your assignment with the Grading Rubric to ensure you have

achieved the distinguished levels of performance for each criterion. Submit

the assignment for evaluation no later than Day 7.

The Action Research Proposal: Literature Evaluation paper

    • Must be six double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references

pages) and formatted according to APA Style.
