    1.1.4 Academic Integrity, Academic
    Dishonesty, and Plagiarism Consequences
    Academic Integrity

The writing you submit must be written by you. It must be a result of your thoughts
and self-expression. To develop your writing this semester, you can work with
Valencia's support team, which includes one of the campus Writing Centers,
Distance Tutoring, the class coach (when available), and your professor.

    Academic Dishonesty
All forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited at Valencia College. Academic
dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, acts or attempted acts of plagiarism,
cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents,
misconduct during a testing situation, facilitating academic dishonesty, and misuse
of identification with intent to defraud or deceive.

    Plagiarism
To avoid plagiarism, create your own work written by you. When sources are
required for an assignment, you must document the source's ideas by quoting
them and citing them as instructed in this course. Here are examples of
    plagiarism:

Plagiarism is when a student uses Artificial Intelligence to generate writing or
    generate ideas for writing.
Plagiarism is when a student uses online tools or resources that generate
    writing.
Plagiarism is when a student uses undocumented ideas from any source.
Plagiarism is when a student uses analysis and interpretations of quotes and
    readings from any source.

Plagiarism is when a student uses another person's ideas, evidence, or
    structure.
Plagiarism is when a student has someone write their assignments.
Plagiarism is when a student rewords or paraphrases information from any
    source without MLA documentation.
Self-Plagiarism is when a student uses work submitted in another course.
Plagiarism can also occur when a student shares their work with someone else
and allows it to be copied or used in any way.

    Plagiarism Consequences
If a student submits an assignment with plagiarized ideas, the assignment earns a
    zero.
If there is a second instance of plagiarism, that assignment also receives a zero,
and the student may be required to meet with professor and/or the dean within 5
days of being notified of the issue.
If there is a third instance of plagiarism, the student will receive a grade of “F” as the
final grade in the course, and the issue may be referred to the college for action in
accordance with Policy 6Hx28:8-03, Student Code of Conduct.

    5.1.2 Lesson: Writing an Introductory
    Paragraph

    Requirements for an Introductory Paragraph
This lesson walks you through the 4 elements of an introduction: hook, bridge,
    summary, and thesis statement.
Make sure you have read the instructions and chosen a prompt from Essay 1
    Prompt and Specific Requirements page
    (https://online.valenciacollege.edu/courses/222539/pages/5-dot-1-essay-1-prompt-and-
specific-paragraph-requirements) before you begin writing your essay's introductory
    paragraph.

Hook: Begin your introduction with a 1-2 sentence hook that gains your audience's
interest on a broader but relatable topic. In the case of this essay, the broader
subject is learning. Your opening sentence should establish common ground with
your readers before jumping into your specific learning experience or what a growth
mindset is, so write your hook about learning and hard work or determination to
succeed that your audience would understand and find relatable.

Bridge to Essay Topic > Begin Summary: Once you have written a hook, you
need to bridge from that hook's idea into your essay's topic, which is learning to get
better at something important. Then, provide the necessary relevant context by
explaining what a growth mindset is (integrate, cite, explicate a quote that defines

audience for your thesis. (Use either Dweck's "Transforming Students'

    mindset is.)

Thesis Statement: The last sentence of your introductory paragraph is your thesis,
where you identify the specific learning experience AND state your main reason
improving your abilities mattered to you. AVOID announcements: Don't "announce"
your thesis by saying something like "In this paper, I will prove…" or "This paper will
show…" Avoid announcements of any kind please.

Point of View: Write using 1st person (I, me, my) for your personal details and 3rd
person when directing something towards the audience or in general about
mindsets (people, everyone, etc.). Do not write in 2nd person (you, your).

Style: The writing must be natural and organized to create cohesion among these
elements for an effective introduction and allow your voice to come through clearly.

    Example Introduction
Hook > Bridge and Introduce Topic > Summary (set up context for your
    situation) > Thesis Statement

Getting really good at something doesn't always come easy and can
require a lot of hard work to learn the necessary skills. Having the right mindset can
help. When people understand that they can develop, this is a growth mindset because

Then, provide the necessary relevant context by
explaining what a growth mindset is (integrate, cite, explicate a quote that defines

    mindset is.)

Plagiarism can also occur when a student shares their work with someone else
and allows it to be copied or used in any way.

improving your abilities mattered to you.

    **## ExplicationOne.docx**

    Write and Explication paper.

    · Your explication should focus on
    **"The Dream of the Rood"**

    ·
**All references should be to the versions of the attachment.**

    · Construct an explication with the following features:

    · An introduction and conclusion– The explication may simply begin its analysis in the first paragraph. However, like a standard essay, the writer still needs a thesis to guide the discussion. Explications may end without a separate overarching conclusion, but they should end with a final review of how the elements discussed work together. However, a writer should never stop an essay simply because he/she has come to the end of minimum requirements.

    · Thesis –
_The thesis for this paper should attempt to answer the “What does it all mean?” question_. The explication should show how the passage’s components work together to create an impression of the work as a whole, of the author, or of a character.

    · Structure – Start with the big picture and move to the details. If the audience is unfamiliar with the passage, the writer may need to provide a brief overview of the contents. How the writer orders an explication varies depending on purpose, but typically, explications follow a chronological format commenting on portions of the passage in the order they appear in the text. However, it can also be useful to discuss the passage elementally, meaning the elements of the passage are discussed as a group. For instance, the writer collects the examples of imagery in the passage and comments on them once.

    · Double-spaced, and have one-inch margins on all sides.  12 Font and centered titles. In the upper right corner should be the author’s last name and a page number.  In the upper left corner of the first page only should be the following information: The Author’s name, The Instructor’s name, the Class, and the Date.  Each item should be on a separate line and double-spaced.

    The Negative Effects of Stress

Stress is a word that most people are very familiar with, but what is stress? Stress is a reaction the brain has to both positive and adverse events. Stress can be caused by numerous day-to-day pressures. Stress is a coping mechanism that helps us deal with life’s trials and triumphs. In fact, stress is not always a bad thing, but it can be if prolonged. Stress can play a huge role in your overall health. Ultimately, stress can affect a person’s mood, behavior, and body.

To begin with, one effect stress is on a person’s mood. The type of mood caused by stress depends on the situation at hand. The moods caused by stress can vary but, for the most part, are all negative. Stress can cause irritability and anger if a person is under pressure. Simple things like getting a promotion or not getting one can cause stress. Being under stress can decrease mental clarity, resulting in a lack of mental function and focus. Stress can affect the chemicals in your brain that in turn can lead to depression. In due course, stress can put someone in a bad mood which eventually is bound to affect their behavior. Another common mood related to stress is sadness. Sadness can consume a person and lead them to depression and other harmful thoughts. Prolonged stress can also affect the way a person responds to happy situations. A person that does not have prolonged stress reacts differently to a happy situation than a person experiencing prolonged stress. It takes more to make them happy.

In addition to effects on the mood, stress can also affect a person’s behavior. Without proper coping mechanisms for dealing with stress, a person may resort to drug or alcohol abuse. Many adults use alcohol as an outlet for stress. It is common to hear people say after a long stressful day they need a drink. Emotional eating is also behavior caused by stress. Some people tend to eat their feelings when upset. While overeating is most common undereating is also common in people that are under stress. These eating habits usual cause unhealthy weight loss and gain. When a person is under stress, some environments can be overwhelming, so they tend to withdraw socially. They don’t want to interact with others and lose the opportunity to vent which relieves stress. Stress can also lead to agitation. Most people that carry a lot of stress tend to be on edge and easily aggravated. They don’t handle situations appropriately and tend to over react unnecessarily.

Another effect, possibly the most important is the effect stress has on the body. The different types of chemicals released by the body in response to stress can have detrimental effects. The chemicals released can cause sleep issues. Most people that deal with stress suffer from insomnia. They have trouble relaxing and turning their minds off. Anxiety is another negative effect of stress. Stress causes tension that causes the body to be sore or fatigued. The same chemicals can cause other issues in the body like high blood pressure, heart problems, digestive problems, and alopecia. In fact, long-term stress has been known to cause so much havoc in the body people have had nervous breakdowns.

Although stress is a normal response, prolonged stress can have devastating effects on a person’s mood, behavior, and body. Stress can be a viscous cycle that leaves a person emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, a person must learn effective coping mechanisms to deal with stress. When coping mechanisms are ineffective, the alternatives are counseling and medication. Without proper stress management, it is likely that a person will have lifelong negative effects.

    Cramming For Life

All across the country students are struggling with preparing for class in a timely and efficient manner. From hectic extracurricular activities taking up time in high school, to irregular work hours throwing off one’s schedule in college, it can be hard to find time to study. Unfortunately, this leads many forced to do nothing else but cram for upcoming tests. When a student crams for their test, it is almost certain that there will be a few consequences that come with it, including anxiety, lack of confidence, poor grades, lack of sleep, slipping into bad habits, and ultimately loss of friends.

When a student puts off studying, for work or other projects, they may be left feeling rushed when it is almost time to take a test. This can give a person anxiety due to intense pressure of trying to learn so much information at one time. No one performs as well with fits of anxiousness or nervousness, due to the fact that it is stressful for a body to have to handle those feelings. It affects blood pressure, appetite, and the overall health of a person. With anxiety comes the absence of confidence. Without confidence there is a high chance of grades suffering. To stay focused and collected during a test it is pertinent to have confidence in the work that the student is trying to complete. Without this confidence, second-guessing answers will occur along with panicking and going blank on information. Overall a person who lacks confidence will have a hard time completing any task, and if they do complete the task it won’t be to the best of their ability because they have lost sight of what that is exactly.

Along with the anxiety and lack of confidence a person has to handle when cramming for a test, lack of sleep will happen. With the late night studying and drinking coffee or red bull to stay awake through the wee hours of the night, a sudden crash is in the future of a student. Even if a student can make it through the test after a long night struggling to stay conscious, the crashing effects can start to alter life outside of school. Lack of sleep will cause laziness, and lethargy in a person, causing a lack of focus or effort at work, or even in extracurricular activities. This could lead to losing a job, or just not doing well at completing other activities going on at that time. The bad habits of cramming for tests carry over into work and social life. One may find themselves running late to work, or not going to the gym as intended because there is always the option to just push it back a little longer. Letting this mentality take over can set a person up for failure in every aspect of life for years to come. Whether it’s at work, at home, or just meeting friends, people will experience a major change in their life. Eventually these habits could be passed on to close family and friends, or even children. Leading to many people negatively affected by a single person’s bad habits.

After a person gets into what seems to be a never-ending cycle of being late or missing deadlines and waiting until the last minute to finish anything, people will notice and some may take it offensively. If a student is rushed to meet a deadline, it is impossible for them to turn in their best work. The person won’t be the best student they can be nor will they be the best friend they can be. It can come off as trying to push friends away or blow them off when a person shows up late or doesn’t seem very focused on them when they are actually together. Eventually, friends might return that emotion and distance themselves. These bad habits ultimately can cause broken friendships and scarce communication with the people that matter in life.

Cramming for a test doesn’t only affect the grade that the student will receive for that one test. Unfortunately, there can be many consequences. Students may not realize that their anxiety levels, confidence, and even their personal life can be altered whenever they fall victim to procrastination. As a result, forming bad habits like cramming for test while in school can cause bad habits for the rest of a person’s life, and for the people closest to them.

    ## The Effects of Yoga

When most people think of yoga, they envision someone sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat, eyes closed, chanting “ohm”. While meditating is an important aspect of practicing yoga, there is so much more to it. Yoga involves meditating, stretching, and a variety of poses. The term “yoga” is a general term considering there are many different types of yoga practices. No matter what type of yoga a person practices everyone has a wide variety of benefits. Each type of yoga effects people’s soul, mind, health and body.

The first thing that yoga effects in a person is their soul. Many religions have some sort of yoga practice, in particular meditation. Practicing meditation is an important part of any yoga workout. Meditation encourages deep pondering, and can be used to find spiritual clarity. Even if a person is not religious, they still can feel a sense of inner peace, and self-contentment. Through yoga, and meditation a person can feel more content with themselves as a whole. Practicing yoga not only helps people on a spiritual level, but it can also improve a person’s mental health.

Another thing yoga has a large effect on in a person is their mentality. Most yoga practices involve breathing exercises and meditation. Doing these things have been proven to help a person clear their mind. Having a clear mind helps one think better, and have better focus. Being able to think clearer and focus better can help with school, work, and daily activities. Yoga helps people relax. Being able to take time to relax helps people reduce their stress levels. People have even claimed that yoga has helped them relieve depression by controlling stress and clearing their minds. Feeling better mentally can greatly improve every aspect of a person’s life. Yoga is great for helping a person’s mental health, but also has great benefits to a person’s physical health.

The practice of yoga has many great benefits to people’s health. Many people have used yoga as a holistic approach to health problems, instead of taking medicine. As stated before, yoga reduces stress. Reducing stress will help anyone become healthier. Less stress can lead to lower blood pressure. All of the stretching that yoga entails helps increase the blood flow to the body. Practicing yoga and breathing exercises can help people control their breathing, building up their endurance; having more endurance in turn helps people have a lower resting heart rate. All of these things combined, lower resting heart rate, more blood flow and less stress, leads to a wonderful benefit of yoga, better sleep quality. Sleep is when the human body rests and repairs itself, so getting an adequate amount of sleep is necessary for good health. Sleeping well also helps feel more rested and energetic. Yoga has just as many benefits for health and just as many benefits to a person’s body.

Lastly, but definitely not least, yoga has an array of effects on the body. There are numerous effects to a person’s body when they start practicing yoga. Yoga involved quite a bit of stretching, which promotes flexibility. Stretching also helps relieve sore muscles. Many people who practice other physical activities will use yoga as a means of recovery. In yoga one must hold a variety of different poses. Holding these poses helps work out many muscles at once. Using all those muscles at once helps build up strength. The poses practiced in yoga also help a person gain better balance, and posture. If yoga is practiced regularly it will build up a person’s endurance to physical exercise as well. Many people begin to notice their body becoming stronger within weeks of beginning a yoga practice.

Over the years yoga has been increasing in popularity; with all the benefits yoga provides it’s easy to understand why more and more people are joining the practice. Yoga can improve a lot of aspects of a person’s life if they practice diligently. The more often one practices yoga, the greater the benefits are. There are many different types and yoga varying in intensity, so there is a type of yoga for everyone. No matter a person’s experience or fitness level, yoga will without a doubt offer many benefits.

There is always something left or created to be accomplished. The anxiety created by this cycle disturbs our perception about our role in the world, and can have crippling effects on an individual. In America, the cultural expectations on goal acquisition, competition, and overall success lead to an overwhelming feeling of stress within the members of the society.**

**The first influential idea that causes stress in American society is the concept of goal acquisition. Productive members of society are expected to be proactive in their personal and professional goals. One person has an endless stream of goals throughout their lives, and are expected to continue to create new goals after completion of an older one. Nobody is ever without numerous goals, and they only allow themselves limited time to feel the achievement of completing one. This produces an environment of constant strain on an individual to keep completing goals and pushing them forward. Goal attainment generates the second influence of stress: competition.**

**Striving constantly for goals creates a competitive atmosphere that fuels everyday life stress further. Individuals compete with other members of society on the speed that tasks are finished. In addition, completing a goal without help weighs more competitively, so it eliminates social support. Individuals’ heightened stress produced by the need to complete these ambitions faster than their social or academic circle of peers on their own is a factor of this opposition. Competition breeds the final cultural influence of stress, which is the overall idea of success.**

**The final and overlying component of American culture that produces a stressful living environment is the idea of success. Success is measured in the rate and number of goals an individual accumulates in a lifetime. Our minds are forced continuously to focus on building up a stockpile of accomplished goals and having more than other people. The idea of success is driven by the notion that an individual needs to be better than everyone else. This concept is a self-destructing idea because there is always going to be someone else with more.**

**The need for success is the root cause of stress in American society. For example, Oprah Winfrey is considered to be successful. How is she more successful than other talk show hosts? Simply, she has accumulated more honors. She not only completed the goals to being a successful talk show host, but she is also a philanthropist, actress, and producer. She consistently describes personal goal accomplishments, such as her ability to lose weight and eat healthy. Successful public figures, such as Oprah, set the bar for everyone else at an almost impossible level. When every individuals’ perception of success is measured in this way, stress is created every day they are not able to reach it.**

**If the standards for success, goals, and competition were more manageable, then the relentless stress of everyday life would not be as extreme. If our cultural ideal of success could be based on situational context, it would allow each individual citizen a chance to feel content with his or her lives. If competition could cease shortly to allow for a moment of triumph, an individual could have a moment unburden from stress. Even if it were just for a moment, it would noticeably reduce stress in a person’s life. People in America must acquire the ability to be proud of the progress made throughout his or her life. Shifting focus to allowing satisfaction of the present, while striving for success needs to be emphasized instead in American society. The only way to relieve the pressure of stress is through reexamining expectations of achievements. Stress is a product of the mind, and the cultural environment needs to change to create a more positive perception of success.**

    Running head: STRESS FOR SUCCESS

    2

    STRESS FOR SUCCESS

    **Stress for Success**

    **Sally Adams**

    **Galen College of Nursing**

    **Stress for Success**

**Texas Tech University’s motto is ‘strive for honor’, but in reality what does that mean? Every day, millions of people begin their day running through a list of tasks that need to be accomplished. These countless citizens lay down in their beds with the same, if not more, number of tasks need to be completed the next day. Despite how much is done, the stress never leaves.
