MAPPING YOUR SOCIAL SUPPORT NETWORK (Adrionna)

All of us, to one degree or another, rely on others to cope with life stresses. This activity will help you see the structure and quality of the social support system that is around you. One way to do this experience is to focus on a specific, recent stressful event and the people who supported you. Another way is to think more generally about the helpful people in your life.

    Step 1
On a separate sheet of paper (preferably unlined), draw three equally spaced concentric circles so that they take up the entire page. The inside ring will show the people in your support system to whom you feel closest, those who know you most intimately and provide the most crucial support. Those in the second ring have a somewhat less intimate relationship with you; those in the outer ring are still supportive but not as critically important to you. Now consider the major categories of people in your life: family, friends from high school, current friends, people you know from work, and so on. There may be three, four, or more such categories. By drawing lines from the middle of the inner most circle, divide the concentric circles into as many pie-shaped pieces as you have categories of support people.  (Don't fill in any names just yet)

    Step 2
On the next page, list by initials the people you consider to be the major supportive individuals in your life. Some could be “specialists,” people to whom you go for help on specific problems; some will be “generalists.” Some people you may see virtually every day; some you may see only periodically. Some might provide emotional support (listening to your problems or letting you know you are important to them); some might provide informational support (how to do something); some might provide instrumental support (loaning you money when you are broke); and, of course, some will provide combinations of these types of support. Just stop when you run out of names. Finally, decide whether your relationship with each person is in the inner (most intimate and supportive), the second, or third ring. You may also want to rate the quality of the support each person provides.

    Step 3
Now write the initials of each person on the diagram in the location that identifies his or her closeness to you and the category or sphere of your life where you interact (family, work, school, and so on). Draw a small circle around each of the initials (people). At this point you can do many things to depict the nature of your support system. One is to draw lines between all the people in the network who know or are friends with one another. This activity will reveal the density of the network (the number of connections out of the total possible). It can also reveal how integrated or isolated the various spheres
of your life might be. For instance, if you draw many lines across boundaries of your life, you have a highly integrated network—people at school know your family, and people at work know friends you made in high school. You can use colors or other designations to indicate the kinds of support that people provide (one for emotional, one for information, one for instrumental). You could indicate whether the direction of support is usually from that individual toward you or is mutual—you provide as much support as he or she does. One more issue you could examine is the direction of the relationship: Is the person moving toward the inner ring, toward the outer ring, or staying at the same level of intimacy/support? You can also examine other aspects of the network, but this exercise should have made it messy enough!

    **Discussion**

_Please note: you do NOT have to include the image of your diagram_

    1) What did you learn by completing this exercise?

    2) Do you have more or less support than you realized?

    3) If you have less, how might you acquire more?

    4) Was it easy or difficult to come up with names of supportive individuals?

    5) Would you recommend this practice to a friend?

    6) If so, why?

    NOTED FROM  ASSIGNMENT WEEK3!!!

That said, there are a few areas where you could push this even further. While you did a great job discussing the interventions, I’d love to see a bit more detail on how these programs are implemented in real-world settings. For example, how do community health workers or social workers adapt these interventions to meet the unique needs of their clients? Additionally, while you mentioned the lack of focus on adolescent fathers, it would be great to see you expand on this a bit more. What specific barriers do teen dads face, and how might interventions be tailored to better support them? This is such an important gap in the research, and it’s one that social workers in the field are increasingly being asked to address.

Lastly, your research questions are clear and well-aligned with the problem statement, but I think you could strengthen them by making them a bit more specific. For example, instead of asking how the program impacts parenting competence, you might ask how it impacts specific aspects of parenting competence, like communication skills or confidence in setting boundaries. This would make it easier to measure and would give you more concrete data to work with in a program evaluation.

Overall, though, this is a really solid piece of work. You’ve clearly put a lot of thought into this, and it shows. Keep up the great work—this is the kind of thinking that will make you an effective social worker in the field!

**Population Health Using a Community Lens**

    **Community of Interest**

Griffin is a city steeped in history and the seat of Spalding County, GA, with a population of over 23,000. Griffin’s community is African American (51%), White (43%), and other ethnicities make up the remainder (Hunter, 2022). Historically, Griffin has long found it challenging to deal with economic disparities and limited access to healthcare. Poverty (22.5% of the population living below the poverty line) and inadequate transportation infrastructure are key issues (Stanhope et al., 2022). However, Griffin is also a community for close kinship with numerous programs locally dedicated to the reclamation of its education and employment potential.

    **Population at Risk**

One population of interest in Griffin is the low-income African-American families. Those who belong to this group are disproportionately affected by systemic inequities such as lack of affordable housing, healthcare services, and quality education. Moreover, many of these families live in neighborhoods with high crime rates and few resources for health, and social fulfillment might be even worse. Improving the overall well-being of the Griffin community depends on addressing the needs of this population.

    **Health Problems of the Population**

Low-income African American families in Griffin face three significant health problems: diabetes, hypertension, and mental health issues. According to the CDC, the prevalence of diabetes among African Americans is 13.2%, compared to 7.5% among non-Hispanic Whites, making this a pressing concern (CDC, 2021). Another significant issue is hypertension. Stanhope & Lancaster (2020) report that Griffin's hypertension rates among African Americans follow the national statistics showing adult hypertension rates of 57.1% versus 43.6% among non-Hispanic Whites. Multiple national studies link economic instability with racial discrimination-related stress and lack of healthcare access to their rising impact on these rates. The development of hypertension is worsened through obesity and restricted physical activity, together with the Minnesota Department of Health (2019) reporting these conditions. Severe complications become frequent findings, especially in cardiovascular disease cases.

This population suffers extensively from mental health problems. The reluctance to seek mental health help exists because stigma accompanies psychiatric disorders while culturally suitable mental health services remain scarce. Structural barriers such as inadequate insurance coverage cultural stigmas and insufficient mental health service providers cause a worsening situation according to the Minnesota Department of Health (2019). Studies show that initiative-based SDOH interventions focusing on employment and education improve mental health outcomes for marginalized populations (Minnesota Department of Health, 2019).

    **Comparison to National Trends**

Nationwide populations that meet similar socio-economic characteristics face identical health challenges with both adults and children. Nationwide data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows diabetes affects 13.2% of African Americans but only 7.5% of non-Hispanic Whites. Tens of millions of adult Americans experience high blood pressure with African Americans showing 57.1% while non-Hispanic Whites have 43.6%. The prevalence of severe psychological distress among African Americans extends higher than among other racial groups at 20% according to CDC (2021). The numbers call for specific preventive strategies according to Stanhope and Lancaster (2020).

Other states with large African-American populations, like Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana, report similar trends. For example, the diabetes prevalence rate among African Americans in Georgia is 14.7 percent and over the national average (Stanhope et al., 2022). Approaches to address these disparities require the effort of community organizations, healthcare providers, and policymakers working together.

**Global Efforts to Address Health Problems**

Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) concentrate on curtailing health differences between marginalized people worldwide. The Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases, a WHO initiative, calls primarily for reducing diabetes and hypertension through community-based programs, plus promoting healthy lifestyles. Also, the Global Mental Health Action Plan tries to widen access to mental health care in remote places. The global efforts show that the root causes of poor health outcomes (Nayna Schwerdtle et al., 2020) impact systemic inequity.

**Vulnerability and Social Determinants of Health**

Totally unprotected by society, low-income African American families located in Griffin experience many obstacles stopping them from getting access to needed services. Life marginalization and two elements like racial oppression, educational inequality, and environmental pressures combine to enhance their overall risk status. Housing stability and food security represent major factors that powerfully influence health. Tacit initiatives for local communities should establish affordable housing development while delivering nutritional literacy lessons and extending medical care facilities for effective disparity resolution. These determinants attract communities to create lasting health equity pathways.
