The outcome of Impact Therapy for women suffering from negative body image

Debbie Ann Rose, Phd, LPC, CRC, BC-TMHC, NCC, ACS

    University of West Alabama

    Author’s Notes: optional

    **Abstract**

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of Impact Therapy (IP) on a group of women who suffer from low self-esteem due to negative body image. Developed by Dr. Ed Jacobs at the University of West Virginia, IP is a form of that utilizes visual images to re-create neuro-pathways in an effort to change how a person thinks about a problem, Jacobs, (2013) For this study, 20 women enrolled at a small regional university in the South, volunteered for a 12-week self-esteem group. The participants were between the ages of 19 and 34 with half of the women being Caucasian and half African American. The methods used were a variety of visual aids presented to the participants regarding an identified negative thought regarding body image. Participants were asked to reflect on the process after each visual aid was presented. Data were collected using Body Image Perception Scale (BIPS) both pre and post-test group experience and the Self-Esteem Rating Scale (SERS), Citation required, (1900). The results of the study showed that after 12-weeks of participation, improvements were found in increase self-esteem and a more positive body image perception. The limitations of this study is that the group consisted of women with poor body image due to obesity. Future studies should focus on how this approach can be used with others including those with eating disorders, males, and persons with disabilities as well as people from other cultures.

**From the article Discuss the group dynamics and group processes you identify.**

    **Group dynamics** are the
**processes** that occur between members of a group. These processes are complex, cyclical, reciprocal, and often occur simultaneously. There are several important factors which impact group dynamics, such as group member power, roles, and coalitions.

Group dynamics refers to the attitude and interaction of group members and leaders.

Describes the interaction and energy exchange between members and between members and leaders. Group dynamics is also used to describe the forces that are operating in a group. These forces may be obvious or hidden they include such things as how members talk to each other, how members feel about each other, how members feel about the leader, and how the leader reacts to the members. The important thing for the leader to realize is that when leading a group there are things to attend to other than just the verbal exchange among members.

Group Process refers to the stages of a group.

Stage 1: Pre-group issues: Formation of the Group

Stage 2: Initial Stage: Orientation and Exploration

Stage 3: Transition Stage: Dealing with Reluctance

Stage 4: Working Stage: Cohesion and Productivity

Stage 5: Final Stage: Consolidation and Termination

Stage 6: Post group Issues: Evaluation and Follow-up

Once you identify a stage, answer these questions:

What are the characteristics of this stage of group development?

What are member functions and Possible problems? (You might need to go to the text book for this information)

**What are the therapeutic factors and how they contribute to group effectiveness?**

Every group process has what Yalom has identified as curative. He identified the following that exist in successful group work:

    · Instillation of Hope.

    · Universality.

    · Imparting Information

    · Altruism.

    · Corrective Recapitulation of the Primary Family
    **Group**.

    · Development of Socializing Techniques.

    · Interpersonal Learning.

    · Imitative behavior

    · Group Cohesiveness.

    · Catharsis

    · Existential factors i.e such as one is alone and responsible

Do not just simply list what I have here. Show me your critical thought and what factors are present in your article

**Characteristics and functions of effective group leaders**

Describe the functions of the group leader and identify the characteristics that effective group leaders would demonstrate.

Again, you may need to use your book to complete this section.

    **Benefits to new counselors**

How is this work useful to you as an aspiring counselor? Do not use first or second person in APA. Write your reflections in third person. Start with what you knew about the approach before reading the article and what new insight or knowledge did you gain from this assignment. I understand that it will be difficult to talk about yourself in third person, but APA is a very formal form of writing and has some rules about grammar that should be followed. NO WORRIES!! I do not count of points for this error; however, I do note that on the rubric for your feedback.

**Contributions to the field of counseling**

How do you think this work contributes to the field of counseling? Remember to use only third person but talk about how this approach or technique will contribute to group counseling, where could this approach be used, does this approach require additional training etc.

    **Future Research**

Expand from the author’s suggested recommendations for new research and mention how that would benefit new counselors and contribute to the field of counseling.

    **Limitations**

Using the limitations cited by the authors of the study, expand on these limitations by suggesting how to address these limitations. Use your imagination and money is no object.

    **Conclusion**

Every great paper has a good conclusion.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    **Overview**

One of the more challenging tasks facing human resources managers is navigating employee layoffs. Managers will often play a central role in both planning and executing the workforce reduction while mitigating its impact on employees and the organization. In this assignment, you will examine the HR manager’s role and determine the strategic planning around layoffs. This includes understanding laws and regulations, completing documentation, logistical planning, and addressing concerns of the existing employees and the remaining workforce. Having a plan for this process is critical, so you will be presenting your plan to the other HR professionals on your team.

    ## **Scenario**

You are the human resources manager for a company with 750 employees and you are creating a presentation for other members of your department that can be used as a resource for potential layoffs or reduction in force that may occur in the future. The presentation will include processes, timelines, and strategies that will become a strategic guide for HR personnel to comply with any state and federal regulations and ensure due process and fairness for the impacted employees.

    ## **Instructions**

**Create a 10 slide PowerPoint presentation for your layoff/RIF plan that includes the following:**

    1. Recommend a general timeline for the process including consultation with other stakeholders, required meetings, and employee notifications.

    – Address the following in your recommendation:
    – Legal considerations such as protected classes and age discrimination.
    – Due process strategies to ensure the layoff is fair and transparent.
    – Applicable federal and state laws or regulations.

    2. Outline a communication plan for employees and stakeholders. This should include documentation requirements and strategies for emotional support and morale.

    3. Outline a severance package and benefit plan for the impacted employees. Considerations include exempt/non-exempt, full-time/part-time, hourly/salaried, FLSA, EEOC, etc.

    – Include the following in your outline:
    – Identify two best practices for determining fair and equitable compensation for a separated employee.
    – Create a compensation chart depicting a fair and equitable timeline for the disbursement of the compensation.
    – Applicable state or federal laws or regulations.

    4. Recommend two strategies for minimizing the impact of the layoff on remaining employees.

    5. Outline a plan for rehiring employees if the company’s financial situation improves.

    6. Describe two ways an organizational layoff can affect a company’s future strategic direction.

    7. Conclusion: Summarize the value of an HR strategic plan during an organizational layoff or reduction in force. Address the importance of adequate planning, communication, and legal compliance in reducing employee stress and improving morale.

    **Formatting requirements:**

    – Include detailed speaker’s notes for each slide.
    – Speaker’s notes should adequately explain, expand, and express your main points for each slide.
    – Include a cover page slide and a source page slide, they will not count toward the minimum 10 slides of content.

Use at least **three** quality academic sources.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

You have been working on an organization for your course project and should have done considerable research to complete the first two parts of the project. Continue to use the company you selected to complete this part of the course project.

    **Company: Amazon (Use this company)**

You   will examine areas of potential diversity, develop a plan for managing   diversity, assess issues associated with managing a multicultural virtual   team, compare and contrast roles of women, develop a plan for training   expatriates, analyze potential for capitalizing on synergy, and select a   management strategy.

**You will need to select one host country where the company operates to compare with the home country.**

Prepare a report on the following topics:

    – Evaluate three areas of potential diversity between the home country and host country. What is the company’s policy on diversity? As the leader, develop a plan for managing the areas of diversity.

    – You are in charge of leading a multicultural virtual team of  employees in the home and host country. Assess team conflict, collaboration, and trust in multicultural virtual team. How will you manage the issues and empower your team?

    – Compare and contrast the role of women in leadership positions in  the home and host countries of the organization selected.

    – Using the lectures, assigned reading, and research, construct a brief plan of how you would conduct training to prepare a manager in the home country for his or her new assignment in the host country.

    – Analyze the situations in which the organization can capitalize on synergy in the workplace.

    – **Select one of the five cross-cultural management strategies from the Week 5 lectures. (See below).** Apply the strategy to your organization, justifying why you selected the strategy.

    · **Cultural Dominance** occurs when one organization is more dominant than the other is. The dominant organization conducts operations in a status quo type of format, usually when they perceive the situation involves a fundamental ethical issue.

    · **Cultural Accommodation** is the opposite of cultural dominance. International leaders imitate the host culture in an attempt to blend in. The fear of failure is a negative effect of this strategy. A positive effect could be the ability to conduct business using different languages and currencies.

    · **Cultural Compromise** combines the two strategies of cultural dominance and cultural accommodation. The dominant organization usually has fewer adaptation burdens; however, both organizations must concede.

    · **Cultural Avoidance** involves conducting operations as if a conflict within cultures exists. The intended outcome of this strategy is to maintain a good image and is used when unresolved issues are deemed less important than the outcome.

    · **Cultural Synergy** occurs when both the dominant and subordinate organizations are committed to resolving problems. Increase in available options and problem-solving techniques are the positive effects of this strategy.

    **Submission Details:**

    – Submit your paper as a 6- to 8-page Microsoft Word document, using APA style.

    · **Due by 2/10/25 at 11:00pm CST**

    **Requirements:**

    1. **Make certain to include in text citations from your course text in addition to your outside leadership resources within your main post. This adds credibility to your argument. ENG 105: Composition I Essay Assignment

    Synthesis Essay Assignment

Purpose: By this point in the term, you have read several essays about various topics related to our

experiences in contemporary culture. In this final paper, then, you will write an essay which brings

together ideas and data from multiple sources to inform the audience about a specific topic (listed

    below).

Writing this essay will require you to 1) look for connections among the ideas in five assigned essays

from Inquiry; 2) develop a thesis statement and main points which make an informative claim (based on

the assigned essays’ content) in response to your research question; and 3) synthesize information from

your sources to support and explain your main points. Your goal will be to effectively and accurately

synthesize the source material in order to inform your audience. A secondary goal will be to integrate

    and document sources correctly.

Topics: Choose one of the following writing prompts:

 Conversations about gender: What messages do we receive about gender, and from where do

they come? How do these messages shape our experiences, identities, and world?

If you decide on this topic, you will want to consider how our environment impacts our

perceptions of gender as well as our experiences. You might consider the perceptions that our

society has regarding gender and how these perceptions compare and/or contrast with the

individual experience. You could investigate the various gender roles that are often cultivated by

society and perpetuated by the media and/or the range of definitions of femininity and

masculinity (including definitions of beauty, strength, power, and weaknesses) found in our

society. Once you have considered these various concerns, you might decide to narrow your

topic to one of these research areas, or you might decide to cover multiple areas.

 Conversations about race and ethnicity: What messages do we receive about race and

ethnicity, and from where do they come? How do these messages shape our experiences,

    identities, and world?

If you decide on this topic, you will want to consider how our environment impacts our

perceptions of race and ethnicity as well as our experiences. You might consider the perceptions

that our society has regarding race and ethnicity and how these perceptions compare and/or

contrast with the individual experience. You could investigate various definitions and

stereotypes involving race and ethnicity as well as the way these might shape an individual’s

experience in America. In addition, you may consider how race and ethnicity might influence the

ways in which individuals navigate and interact with various American institutions and networks

(places of employment, educational institutions, social media platforms, etc.). Once you have

considered these various concerns, you might decide to narrow your topic to one of these

research areas, or you might decide to cover multiple areas.

 Conversations about class: What messages do we receive about economic class, and from

where do they come? How do these messages shape our experiences, identities, and world?

If you decide on this topic, you will want to consider how our environment impacts our

perceptions of class as well as our experiences. You might consider the perceptions that our

society has regarding class and how these perceptions compare and/or contrast with the

individual experience. You could investigate various definitions and stereotypes involving class

as well as the way these might shape an individual’s experience in America. In addition, you may

consider how class influences the ways in which individuals navigate and interact with various

American institutions and networks (places of employment, educational institutions, social

media platforms, etc.). Once you have considered these various concerns, you might decide to

narrow your topic to one of these research areas, or you might decide to cover multiple areas.

 Conversations about social responsibility: In what ways might we engage in or avoid civic

action, and how might these actions shape our experiences, identity, and world?

If you select this topic, you will consider the extent of our social responsibilities as individuals.

You may consider the ways in which our behaviors and attitudes might contribute to the health

of our planet, the health of humankind, the empowerment and/or oppression of individuals, the

strengthening and/or weakening of communities, etc. You could investigate how business and

marketing practices as well as the practices of established institutions influence our decisions as

consumers and citizens as well as impact the fate of our planet, our health, and our identity.

Once you have considered these various concerns, you might decide to narrow your topic to one

of these research areas, or you might decide to cover multiple areas.

 Conversations about technology: How does technology shape our experiences, identity, and

    world?

If you select this topic, you will investigate various technological advances as well as their

influences upon our lives. You might consider how technology impacts and/or shapes education,

personal relationships, individual identities, communication practices, perceptions of reality,

consumption practices, news and information, entertainment, etc. Once you have considered

these various ideas, you might decide to narrow your topic to focus on one research area, or you

might decide to cover multiple areas regarding technology.

 Conversations about education: What does it mean to be educated, and how does education

shape our experiences, identity, and world?

If you select this topic, you might consider the qualities that contribute to a “good” education as

well as the purpose of an education. You could investigate who does and does not have access

to education as well as what and how we learn about ourselves and the world when we become

“educated.” How does being “educated” influence the ways in which individuals navigate and

interact with various American institutions and networks (places of employment, educational

institutions, social media platforms, etc.)? Once you have considered these various concerns,

you might decide to narrow your topic to one of these research areas, or you might decide to

    cover multiple areas concerning education.

    Content:

 Introduction: Your introduction should follow the inverted triangle model in your textbook and

should provide a context for the rest of your essay by providing some background of the cultural

situation which has precipitated the “conversation” regarding the issue about which you’re

writing. That is, it should lead us into the topic as well as provide a context for the topic by

explaining the cultural problem to which the academic “conversation” is responding.

 Thesis: Your thesis statement should avoid making a persuasive opinionated claim, and instead

should make an informative claim which represents the ideas you’ve encountered in your

sources. It should acknowledge agreed-upon components of the academic conversation but also

make mention of diverging views (when appropriate). You might use one of the following

    templates:

o Although scholars do not agree upon ______________, they largely agree that

    _______________.

    _______________.

o Despite widespread agreement among cultural critics about ____________, they cannot

    agree upon ______________ .

o Scholars widely agree ______________________ and all point to research which

    supports the belief that ________________________________________.

o Experts tend to agree that _________________________ impacts ___________ as they

work together to present a view that _____________.

o Scholars agree that through _________________________________, the

    _____________ impacts individuals in a ________________ manner.

Body: This section of your essay should provide any additional background necessary and should lay out

the major claims in support of your thesis. Your goal here is NOT to merely summarize each of your

sources. Instead, you need to have topic sentences which put forward a point and then use information

from multiple sources to help explain and support that point. That is, your topic sentences will put

forward overarching areas of agreement or contention you’ve seen across multiple sources (or

conclusions about the issue you’ve come to through reading all of your sources), and your paragraph

content should explain the topic sentence through providing your own discussion as well as information

    synthesized from your sources.

Conclusion: Your conclusion should bring appropriate closure to your essay, tying together the claims

made in the body, reinforcing the thesis, and perhaps even commenting on the potential further-

reaching implications of this issue for culture.

Additional Content: Either in the body or as part of the conclusion, you might choose to briefly explore

issues, counterarguments, or implications the sources failed to address or overlooked.

Source Requirements: Refer to the “Topic Choices and Reading Assignments” handout.

Documentation: Your essay should follow MLA documentation guidelines, including source integration

methods, in-text citations, and a Works Cited page.
