New Orleans, Louisiana, is a vibrant city with a population of 364,136 residents as of July 1, 2023. The city's demographics and socioeconomic factors reflect its rich cultural diversity and unique challenges (United States Census Bureau, [USBC], 2020).

    Age and Gender:

The median age of 5 years indicates a relatively young population, likely driving demand for affordable housing and job opportunities. Females make up 52.9% of the population, slightly more than males, which may influence local programs focused on gender equity and workforce participation (USBC, 2020).

    Race and Ethnicity:

New Orleans is predominantly Black or African American (55.2%), followed by White (31.6%) and Hispanic or Latino (7.9%) The city’s African American community significantly shapes its cultural identity, especially in music and cuisine (USBC, 2020).

    Educational Attainment:

With 7% of residents holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, New Orleans has a relatively educated workforce. This highlights the need for continued investment in higher education and skill development, particularly for underserved groups (USBC, 2020).

    Income and Employment:

The median household income is $55,580, which may present challenges in terms of affordable housing and economic mobility. The 1% employment rate and 4.2% unemployment rate reflect a stable labor market, but the relatively low participation rate suggests room for growth in workforce engagement (USBC, 2020).

Health Concern: Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases in New Orleans

One of the major health concerns in New Orleans is obesity, which contributes significantly to various chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. This public health issue has wide-reaching implications for both the individual and community levels (Louisiana Department of Health, [LDH], 2022)

    Epidemiological Terms:

Mortality: Obesity-related conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes, contribute to higher mortality rates in New Orleans. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, in 2022, nearly one out of four adults in Louisiana were considered obese. Additionally, America's Health Rankings reports that as of 2023, 39.9% of Louisiana adults have a body mass index (BMI) of 30.0 or higher (Louisiana Department of Health, [LDH], 2022).

Morbidity: Obesity is associated with a range of chronic health conditions. In New Orleans, the prevalence of obesity-related morbidity is high, with rates of hypertension and diabetes significantly above the national average. The city's healthcare system sees a substantial number of hospitalizations and medical visits related to these conditions (LDH, 2022).

Incidence: The incidence of obesity in New Orleans has been steadily rising, with new cases of obesity and its related complications developing each year. Recent reports suggest that nearly 40% of adults in New Orleans are obese, and this number continues to grow as unhealthy lifestyle choices, limited access to healthy foods, and socioeconomic factors persist (LDH, 2022).

Prevalence: The prevalence of obesity in New Orleans is alarmingly high, with more than 35% of the adult population classified as obese. This statistic represents all existing cases of obesity at a given point in time, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue through public health campaigns, education, and improving access to healthier food and exercise options (LDH, 2022).

    **#2**

Denver, Colorado has a population of approximately 715,000 people (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). The median age in Denver is around 35 years. About 68% of the population are Caucasian, African American are 10%, and other races are 5% (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). Approximately 30% of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, which includes individuals of various racial backgrounds (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). About 51% of the population are females and about 49% are males (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). Approximately 40% of the population are married, 12% are divorced, and 6% are widowed (Colorado Health Institute, 2021). About 47% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is above the national average (Colorado Health Institute, 2021). The median household income in Denver is roughly $75,000 and per capita income around $40,000 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). About 62% of the working-age population (16 and older) is employed and the unemployment rate hovers around 3-4% (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). Around 50-55% of homes are owner-occupied with approximately 2.5 people per household (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021).

A major health concern in Denver, Colorado, is mental health, particularly the increasing rates of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. This issue has become a significant public health focus in the city, and there are concerning trends in terms of morbidity, mortality, incidence, and prevalence. In 2021, the suicide rate in Colorado was around 22.6 deaths per 100,000 individuals, which is notably higher than the national average (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 2021). According to a 2021 report, nearly 1 in 5 adults in Colorado report experiencing a mental illness, which mirrors national statistics (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Denver also has high rates of substance use disorders, particularly related to alcohol, marijuana, and opioid misuse (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). The incidence of mental health conditions in Denver is increasing, particularly for adolescent and young adult populations. According to recent surveys, about 30% of adolescents in Denver report experiencing depression or anxiety at some point in their life, with a rising trend in new diagnoses over the past decade (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Approximately 21% of adults in Denver experience some form of mental illness annually (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Prevalence data also highlights issues like substance use disorder: an estimated 12-15% of Denver's population struggles with alcohol use disorder, and nearly 5-10% are affected by opioid use disorder (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Denver has been working to expand mental health resources, but the growing demand continues to strain services, contributing to the ongoing challenges of providing adequate care to all affected individuals.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Here are my clarifications (only use them to better understand the follow-up tasks that I assign below).

    – In order to fully meet the expectations each week and to learn the information that you need to understand the commonly used statistics to report practice projects results, you _**must**_ find an article that uses the inferential statistic that is the focus for the week.
    – For the equations related to the inferential tests, use the ones in the handout related to inferential testing that I sent last week.
    – You do not need to write an introduction or provide an overview of the study for this course unless they are specifically asked for in the outline for the discussion. Starting in Week 8, the discussion topics will ask for some of these elements. Also, the Putting It All Together (PIAT)  that is due in Week 9 plus the discussions in future courses will require those elements. Always follow the descriptions of the content given with each discussion.
    – You must find a second article each week related to a statistical concept covered in the week (chi-square in this case) or one of the concepts from the first three weeks (descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, clinical significance). You must put two paragraphs that summarize at least two points from the article.
    – For APA format
    – The source of at least the purpose statement must be given with the purpose statement in the text of your answers in this format: (Widyowati et al., 2021, p. 236). The page number is only provided when direct quotes are used. Other than the purpose statement all additional content needs to be paraphrased.
    – In reference list entries, only the first word in the title of a journal article and the first word after a colon start with an upper case letter.
    – The volume (in italics), issue, and page numbers are also given in the reference citation at the end of the discussion. You do not need to skip so many lines between the content of the discussion and the reference list entries.

**Follow-up Tasks. Your response is due Tuesday, 2.11.25.**

    – Find a research article that reports the **chi-square** statistic. Only spend 20 minutes trying to find an appropriate research study. If you cannot quickly find a study, let me know. and provide this information:

    – Purpose statement exactly as stated in the article (citing the author, publication year, and page #).
    – From the purpose statement, identify the population, IV, and one DV. What is the LOM and type of variable of the DV?
    – Write the Ho and Ha in words and equations, using the format for the chi-square equation provided in the handout included in the the announcement this week. Change the indicated parts to the groups and variable used in the article.
    – Were the assumptions for the chi-square test met in this study? Provide information given in the study that can be used to determine whether each assumption is or is not met. What information is not given?
    – What alpha level (level of significance) was used? Indicate where it is given in the article or if it is assumed.
    – Name the groups that were tested.
    – Give the frequencies for the DV you chose for each of the groups.
    – Give the chi-square statistic (if provided) and p-value for the difference in frequencies for the DV you chose as a focus.
    – Specifically state the p-value rule for the results of this study to determine whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. The rule is found in the handout on statistical tests.
    – The effect size for chi-square results is reported as a Phi or Cramer's V statistic (Kim et al., (2022), pp. 308-309. Give this value, if given in the study, and interpret what it means in terms of the magnitude or clinical meaningfulness (clinical significance) of the result.
    – Subtract the frequency of the DV in one group from the frequency in the other group. To further determine the clinical significance of this difference in frequencies, use your knowledge, critical thinking, and experience with your patients and setting. Would you incorporate the intervention or treatment into your practice? Is your evaluation of the clinical significance of the findings consistent with the statistical significance for the findings and the value of the effect size? Explain your rationale.

    1.Cyntia C Classmate

In the videos in assignment 1, I noticed that in the Ymca video, each student had a cot to rest in, however the napping area seemed crowded and lacked sufficient space for children to comfortably rest. One child's cot was facing directly at the furniture. I rate this a 1 using the ecesr-3 tool.  Some children had limited personal space due to the arrangement of the cot and bedding. Additionally, the area did not appear to be adequately separated from the rest of the classroom, resulting in distractions from other activities. I would recommend that the space between the cots/mats be reorganized so that each child has more personal space to reduce distractions and overcrowding to allow a peaceful rest environment.

In Assignment 1, when I observed a classroom, I scored a 5 in (Space and Furnishing #3 Room Arrangement for play and learning. The classroom has a kitchen, laundry, grocery store and a play house for dramatic play. Classroom does not have enough space for all children to engage in activities in the space comfortably.

Additionally, in (Learning activities # 21 Dramatic play) I also scored the classroom a 5. The classroom has multiple centers for dramatic play but does not include clothing for role playing, prop box for fantasy or leisure themes and props for dramatic play outdoors. I would consider adding more real world items or culturally diverse props that reflect different family structures, occupations and environments. For example, including dolls or clothing from various cultures. If the teacher intentionally incorporates diverse cultural themes and practices into dramatic play, she can create an inclusive environment that promotes empathy, respect, and cultural awareness.

The advice I would give Administration for future success is to consider utilizing the ECERS-3 tool to offer constructive, specific and actionable feedback. With the data collected, administration should encourage teachers to reflect on their own practices and seek support where needed. Admin can also support teachers by providing targeted professional development of areas of improvement or where teachers need the most support.

My three lowest scores given in Assignment I were toileting/diapering, space for privacy, and blocks. I gave these scores as I felt they were appropriate in relation to the description of each of these categories. Although the space seems to be quite spacious in the classroom, there does not seem to be a ton of space for privacy for the students. Students have the opportunity to play alone or with a friend during different times of the day, but there is not a lot of space to not interfere with other children’s access to play. Additionally, if students are attending the calm down area or using the solutions kit, there is not enough space for them to do privately. Toileting/diapering was not displayed much in the video. Therefore, I am not sure of the exact procedures for toileting/diapering. Although blocks were seen in the classroom, there was not direct access to them for children to use in the classroom. As the blocks were seen in different areas of the classroom, I think it would be more beneficial to house them in one general area of the classroom for the children to utilize. Advice that I would give to administrators to elevate future scores is to familiarize yourself with the ECERS-R to ensure that you fully understand each subcategory. Another piece of advice I would give is to make sure that all classroom routines are strong and in place. It is so important that children are given the proper space in each classroom to perform daily routines. Additionally it is important to make sure we have the proper time allotted to evaluate as “A block of at least 3 hours should be set aside for the observation, with additional time added as needed to more closely examine materials and gross motor area” (Clifford, Cryer, and Harms). Doing all of these steps will help administrators to evaluate future scores.
