    **Discussion Assignment Instructions**

**Directions: You will post one thread of at least 300 words of the assigned week.**

For each thread, students must support their assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations and references in APA format.

Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years unless the student is citing classic or historical theoretical information or research. Acceptable sources include course materials, scholarly peer-reviewed sources, and/or the Bible, in current APA format, with at least 1 of the sources being from course materials or scholarly, peer-reviewed articles or texts.

Single-spacing is appropriate in the discussions. The student will not be penalized if the references in the discussions are not in hanging indentation format, due to the difficulty that sometimes occurs with formatting discussions. First person is acceptable in the discussions.

**Post-First:** This course utilizes the post-first feature in all Discussions. This means you will only be able to read and interact with your classmates’ threads after you have submitted your thread in response to the provided prompt.

**Discussion Thread: Prenatal/Infant Development; Transactional, Bioecological, RDS Models**

As you engage with the material for Modules 5 and 6, what issues come up for you? What are your thoughts and feelings about the topics? Share your perspectives on the material, and support your perspectives with material from the course and/or other scholarly sources. Some topics and questions to consider are:

    · Were there any topics in Modules 5 and 6 that were particularly interesting to you? If so, which ones, and why?

    · Was there anything in Modules 5 and 6 that seemed surprising to you or different from what you previously thought? If so, what, and why? How was it different or surprising?

    · Discuss any of the videos and other course materials that you find particularly interesting. What does the material have to offer the field of developmental psychology/science?

    · Discuss some of the major points of prenatal and infant development.

    · Discuss transactional, bioecological, and relational developmental systems models. How have theorists such as Bronfenbrenner, Sameroff, and Lerner changed the trajectory of developmental psychology/science? Or have they? How has developmental psychology/science changed over the past several decades?

    · Discuss your choice of topics from Modules 5 and 6 from a Christian perspective. Are developmental theories and metatheories, and the other topics of these 2 modules, compatible with a Christian worldview? If so, how? If not, in what ways are they not? If not, how does a Christian developmental psychologist resolve the conflict?

You are not limited to these questions and topics, and you do not need to answer all the questions or address all the topics posed above. They are suggested to provide a starting point for your thought processes. Share your own ideas that relate to the topics of the module, and pose questions of your own if you wish. First person is acceptable in the discussions.

WK 6 DB: Prenatal/Infant Development; Transactional, Bioecological, RDS Models

After reading chapter ten “Relational Development Systems-Based Theories,” Jochen

Brandtstadter’s action theory central focus is on an individual’s intentions in his or her regulatory

actions. Meaning such actions give consideration to and set in motion maturing. According to

Lerner (2018), life span development is a lifelong process. No age period holds predominance in

controlling the nature of development. Life span changes in the dynamic between science of life

and civilization. Watching the videos in this assignment was amazing and full of knowledge

learning about the developmental stages of the fetus from inception and walking through the

weeks of maturation. Some examples of development were within the first eight weeks the fetus

can respond to touch and grasp at the area that was touched. The optic (vision) nerves developing

by the time the fetus is fifteen weeks. As the fetus grow and mature, it will develop what is know

as plasticity (within-person variability) which is found in the process of psychological

development. A major cultural issue for individuals that study the Word of God is that many do

not recognize the authority of the Bible. The Bible includes several scriptures referring to fetus

and the development of a child in the womb.

Lerner (2018), talks about action theories of human development pertinent to the nature

of human plasticity within RDS-based theories that suggests that developmental regulation

processes that govern or moderate the content and the pace, duration, and magnitude of the

relations involving the actions of individuals on their contexts and the actions of contexts on

individuals should be a dominant focus of investigations in the research of human development.

RDS-based ideas appear in this chapter to succeed. It may be, then, that such theories will be the

ones that prove most captivating to developmental researchers investigating psychological

    processes throughout the twenty-first century.

In conclusion: in the sight of the theories in this chapter, as well as other examples of

RDS-based theories, individuals are part of a combined dynamic and multilevel process. The

potential for and instantiations of plasticity and initiative-taking research for attributes of

individuals and their ecology that together can be arranged to encourage positive human

maturation across life. Through the application of developmental science in planned attempts to

strengthen the nature of humans maturing orientation, the promotion of positive human

development can be attained by positioning the strengths of individuals and contextual

    relationship.

A 32-year-old woman presents for evaluation of a lump that she noticed in her right breast on self-examination. She says that while she does not perform breast self-examination often, she thinks that this lump is new. She denies nipple discharge or breast pain, although the lump is mildly tender on palpation. She has never noticed any breast masses previously and has never had a mammogram. She has no personal or family history of breast disease. She takes oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) regularly, but no other medications. She does not smoke cigarettes or drinkalcoholLinks to an external site.. She has never been pregnant. On examination, she is a well-appearing, somewhat anxious, and thin woman. Her vital signs are within normal limits. On breast examination, in the lower outer quadrant of the right breast, there is a 2-cm, firm, well-circumscribed, freely mobile mass without overlying erythema that is mildly tender to palpation. There is no skin dimpling, retraction, or nipple discharge. While no other discrete breast masses are palpable, the bilateral breast tissue is noted to be firm and glandular throughout. There is no evidence of axillary, supraclavicular, or cervical lymphadenopathy. The remainder of her physical examination is unremarkable.

New Orleans, Louisiana, is a vibrant city with a population of 364,136 residents as of July 1, 2023. The city's demographics and socioeconomic factors reflect its rich cultural diversity and unique challenges (United States Census Bureau, [USBC], 2020).

    Age and Gender:

The median age of 5 years indicates a relatively young population, likely driving demand for affordable housing and job opportunities. Females make up 52.9% of the population, slightly more than males, which may influence local programs focused on gender equity and workforce participation (USBC, 2020).

    Race and Ethnicity:

New Orleans is predominantly Black or African American (55.2%), followed by White (31.6%) and Hispanic or Latino (7.9%) The city’s African American community significantly shapes its cultural identity, especially in music and cuisine (USBC, 2020).

    Educational Attainment:

With 7% of residents holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, New Orleans has a relatively educated workforce. This highlights the need for continued investment in higher education and skill development, particularly for underserved groups (USBC, 2020).

    Income and Employment:

The median household income is $55,580, which may present challenges in terms of affordable housing and economic mobility. The 1% employment rate and 4.2% unemployment rate reflect a stable labor market, but the relatively low participation rate suggests room for growth in workforce engagement (USBC, 2020).

Health Concern: Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases in New Orleans

One of the major health concerns in New Orleans is obesity, which contributes significantly to various chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. This public health issue has wide-reaching implications for both the individual and community levels (Louisiana Department of Health, [LDH], 2022)

    Epidemiological Terms:

Mortality: Obesity-related conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes, contribute to higher mortality rates in New Orleans. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, in 2022, nearly one out of four adults in Louisiana were considered obese. Additionally, America's Health Rankings reports that as of 2023, 39.9% of Louisiana adults have a body mass index (BMI) of 30.0 or higher (Louisiana Department of Health, [LDH], 2022).

Morbidity: Obesity is associated with a range of chronic health conditions. In New Orleans, the prevalence of obesity-related morbidity is high, with rates of hypertension and diabetes significantly above the national average. The city's healthcare system sees a substantial number of hospitalizations and medical visits related to these conditions (LDH, 2022).

Incidence: The incidence of obesity in New Orleans has been steadily rising, with new cases of obesity and its related complications developing each year. Recent reports suggest that nearly 40% of adults in New Orleans are obese, and this number continues to grow as unhealthy lifestyle choices, limited access to healthy foods, and socioeconomic factors persist (LDH, 2022).

Prevalence: The prevalence of obesity in New Orleans is alarmingly high, with more than 35% of the adult population classified as obese. This statistic represents all existing cases of obesity at a given point in time, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue through public health campaigns, education, and improving access to healthier food and exercise options (LDH, 2022).

Approximately 30% of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, which includes individuals of various racial backgrounds (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). About 51% of the population are females and about 49% are males (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). Approximately 40% of the population are married, 12% are divorced, and 6% are widowed (Colorado Health Institute, 2021). About 47% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is above the national average (Colorado Health Institute, 2021). The median household income in Denver is roughly $75,000 and per capita income around $40,000 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). This issue has become a significant public health focus in the city, and there are concerning trends in terms of morbidity, mortality, incidence, and prevalence. In 2021, the suicide rate in Colorado was around 22.6 deaths per 100,000 individuals, which is notably higher than the national average (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 2021). According to a 2021 report, nearly 1 in 5 adults in Colorado report experiencing a mental illness, which mirrors national statistics (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Denver also has high rates of substance use disorders, particularly related to alcohol, marijuana, and opioid misuse (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). The incidence of mental health conditions in Denver is increasing, particularly for adolescent and young adult populations. According to recent surveys, about 30% of adolescents in Denver report experiencing depression or anxiety at some point in their life, with a rising trend in new diagnoses over the past decade (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Approximately 21% of adults in Denver experience some form of mental illness annually (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). Prevalence data also highlights issues like substance use disorder: an estimated 12-15% of Denver's population struggles with alcohol use disorder, and nearly 5-10% are affected by opioid use disorder (Mental Health Colorado, 2021). One of the major health concerns in New Orleans is obesity, which contributes significantly to various chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
