    **## Overview_11_15.docx**

    **Overview**

In earlier weeks, you completed a literature review on the topic of grit and Big 5 personality traits. Now you will do the data analysis for a study.

Statistical analysis is an important research skill because it allows you to summarize and interpret data. This step in your research process allows you to identify patterns and relationships within the data set provided to you for your study.

In this assignment, you will conduct a statistical analysis of data. You will review the data set, consider the statistical analysis to use, and conduct the statistical analysis in JASP. Once you complete the analysis, you will fill in the
[Research Method and Data Analysis Template [DOCX]](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/50870/files/9843262/download), making sure to identify the statistical test you used to analyze your data and explaining why you selected it.

    **Preparation**

Review the following document for tips and also an overview of how this course's assignments fit together:

    ·
[Overview of the Research Project and Report [PDF]](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/50870/files/9843257/download).

    **Instructions**

In this assignment, conduct a statistical analysis of data using the following data set. (The data set is provided in both JASP and an Excel spreadsheet. Ultimately, you will need to analyze it in JASP.)

    ·
[Grit Data [JASP]](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/50870/files/9843254/download). You'll need to download JASP before you can open this.

    ·
    [Grit Data [XLSX]](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/50870/files/9843238/download).

The data set includes 100 adults who were recruited globally. The measures used in the data set include the Big 5 personality assessment and the 12-item grit scale. You will want to research these instruments to describe the measures used to collect data.

    Using the
[Research Method and Data Analysis Template [DOCX]](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/50870/files/9843262/download), address the following points:

    In 2–3 pages:

    · State your hypotheses. A distinguished analysis will also summarize the research method you used.

    · Present the demographics of your sample using descriptive statistics.

    · State the statistical tests used to analyze your data and why the tests were chosen. For a distinguished analysis, also be sure to:

    · Create a table to display the data from your descriptive statistical analysis of demographics.

    · State your statistical findings, along with numerical representation of the data. A distinguished analysis will also state whether or not your results were statistically significant.

    · Explain in plain language what your statistical findings mean and whether or not they support your hypothesis. For a distinguished analysis, also be sure to:

    · Include a screenshot of your data analysis results from Excel.

    · Perform the appropriate effect size calculation for your data, and for a distinguished analysis, also be sure to discuss what it means.

    · Be sure to format your data in APA style.

Remember to consult the Research Method and Data Analysis rubric to make sure you cover all that will be assessed.

    **Additional Requirements**

Overview of the Research Project and Report

    1. ABOUT THIS RESEARCH STUDY
Assume you are working on a research team as a research assistant. The lead researcher has
provided you with a research question, some literature, and a data set. She has been studying
the traits of grit and openness in relation to career development. She explains that most
previous research has examined each trait separately, even though both are important. For
example, openness enables individuals to think beyond rigid assumptions, reframe challenges,
and incorporate new information—skills that help overcome obstacles in finding career
opportunities. Grit, on the other hand, provides the persistence needed to pursue long-term
    goals.

The lead researcher asks you to begin by contributing to the literature review. Five articles have
been provided, and you will locate and add two additional articles through your own research.
As a research assistant, it is also important that you receive training in research ethics. Next,
you will write the hypothesis statement and the research method sections of the research report.
Finally, you will conduct the statistical analysis and complete the remaining sections of the
    research report.

Regardless of the results of the statistical analysis, this research will offer valuable insights. It
represents one step in a series of studies aimed at advancing understanding of how grit and
openness develop. The lead researcher is particularly interested in your ideas about practical
implications and future research directions—these are the final two components of the project—
because your contributions may inform the next phase of studies and interventions designed to
support college students in their career development.

    2. FOUNDATIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE RESEARCH
    PROJECT

    2-1 RESEARCH QUESTION
Is there a positive significant relationship between grit and openness to experience in adults?

    2-2 RECRUITMENT
Adults were recruited in many countries through Qualtrics. All participants filled out a
demographic form along with the Big 5 Personality Assessment and Duckworth’s 12-item grit
    scale.

    2-3 DATA SET
See links to two data sets in the Week 6 assignment—one JASP and one Excel.

    3. FINAL RESEARCH REPORT TIPS

    1

Take a look at the final research report assignment template. Note that your report will include
four main sections: a literature review, research method, results, and discussion. These tips are
    for the final two sections.

3-1. RESULTS SECTION OF YOUR RESEARCH REPORT
To run your statistics to prepare the results section, here are some tips:

You can find a one-minute video showing the first statistical analysis you will do, JASP Grit Big
5 Tutorial, along with other JASP resources, in the What You Need to Know for Week 6 activity.

Note that you only need openness and grit—you do not need to include conscientiousness.

Next run your descriptive statistics. You will see that you have many options such as gender
identity, marital status, education level, et cetera. You can select two of the demographics to
    use for your descriptive statistics.

View JASP Tutorial Videos section on the JASP Statistical Software Campus page.

    • The Descriptive Statistics Table video helps for continuous data (for example, age or
anything where it makes sense to get a mean, median, or mode).

    • The Frequency Tables video helps to get percentages of people in a given category.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND SUGGESTIONS FOR
    FUTURE RESEARCH
Note that the final research report template requires you to include implications for practice, as
well as two ideas for future research—one quantitative and one qualitative. To help you get
started, the lead researcher has provided a few initial suggestions.

MORE INPUT FROM THE LEAD RESEARCHER
To begin thinking about practical implications and future research, the lead researcher gives you
this coaching. Remember that regardless of how the study goes, your ideas for implications for
practice and ideas for future studies are important. Here is just one of many possibilities. If a
significant correlation is found between grit and openness to experience, it may suggest
that curiosity and openness to experience are linked to greater persistence in pursuing long-
term goals. This could inform future studies exploring how these traits influence one another
over time. For example, openness may promote adaptive thinking and exploration, while grit
    supports sustained effort.

On the other hand, if no significant correlation is found between grit and openness to
experience, this may indicate that the traits develop independently. Since both creative
exploration and sustained effort are important—but may not naturally co-occur—career
development interventions should aim to foster each trait separately, recognizing that
strengthening one does not automatically enhance the other. In this case, ideas for interventions
and future research would focus on identifying distinct strategies for cultivating each trait within
one program. For example, a component aimed at enhancing openness might emphasize

Take a look at the final research report assignment template. Note that your report will include
four main sections: a literature review, research method, results, and discussion. These tips are
    for the final two sections.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    **Outcome Being Evaluated:**
One intermediate outcome for Tides Family Services is improved family functioning among youth participants following engagement in strength-based counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy services. This outcome is defined as measurable progress in family relationships, communication, and resilience, as indicated by standardized family functioning assessment tools administered pre- and post-intervention.
More specifically, measuring the Tides "Outreach and Tracking" program and whether there is improved linkage to community support resources for youth and families at the time of program discharge. This outcome is operationalized as the proportion of families who, upon closing services, are actively connected to at least one community-based support resource (e.g., mental health services, educational programs, or social services) that addresses their identified needs.
    **Evaluation Design:**
The best way to evaluate this outcome is by using a self-controlled pre-/post-design. This method compares each participant's connection to community support resources at both intake and discharge. It’s a logical choice because it allows the researchers to observe how each family changes over time, without needing to set up a control group or other program components that aren't actually in place ( _Pre-Post Study: Definition, Advantages, and Drawbacks_, n.d.). Additionally, Tides Family Services already gathers data on family needs and service connections during intake and discharge, so this approach is practical and aligns with our current processes.
    **Limitations of the Design:**
A key limitation of the self-controlled pre/post design is "history effects", the possibility that changes in linkage to community resources may be influenced by external events or changes in the community environment (such as new resource availability or policy changes) rather than the program itself (Miller et al., 2020). For example, if a new community mental health clinic opens during the program period, families may be more likely to connect to services regardless of their participation in the Outreach and Tracking program. This makes it difficult to attribute improvements solely to the intervention (Bykov et al., 2019).
    **Sampling Strategy:**
The evaluation will include all families who participate in the Outreach and Tracking program and complete both intake and discharge assessments. This approach ensures that the sample reflects the actual population served by the program and allows for the assessment of change over time for each family. This sampling strategy is appropriate because it aligns with the program’s real-world implementation and captures the diversity of families served, including those with varying levels of risk and need.
