When writing research or academic papers, it is common to use outside sources to inform
your own ideas. However, it is critical that the necessary citations are provided to these
outside references. Citation is important because it shows that you obtained information or
ideas from another source, such as a textbook, website, or research article. By failing to cite,
you are falsely portraying someone else's ideas as your own; this is considered plagiarism,
which is a form of cheating.

Company Choice Essay plus Bonus Video Presentation Option Assignment
    150 points

This semester, we will discuss the challenging context of international business, as well as the
internal and external forces with which international firms must contend. To fully understand
the unique issues international firms face requires close study of how a company within an
industry addresses a particular problem. In this assignment, you will apply the concepts
discussed in this course to a real-world example.

The requirement for this assignment is that you must select at least ONE United States (US) or
international company within your industry choice (for example, if you are in the social media
industry you must write about a social media company (ex: TikTok), not a company outside
of this industry, for example, Nike) and write an essay where you will argue if your company
of choice has succeeded or failed to expand internationally. Your analysis will show how the
company initially formed, what problems it faced as it tried to grow and expand initially, some
of the issues the company faced as it grew using at least two of the concepts from the class
lecture topics we have talked about this semester (for example, labor, competitive strategy,
marketing, supply chain, etc.), and finally, in your conclusion, what is the international
outlook for the company’s future (if you do not think your company will expand
internationally, you must give a reason why using the concepts we have studied this
semester.) To help guide you through the writing process, I have included a very specific
    format for the assignment.

    Format
Final paper drafts will be due by 4 pm (CST), Saturday, November 15. Papers will need to be
submitted as a Microsoft Word document or Adobe .pdf document via the Turn-it-in Link on
CANVAS. The paper must be between 4 – 5 pages, double-spaced, and use no higher than 12-

    point font and 1-inch margins.

Company Choice Essay plus Bonus Video Presentation Option Assignment: This assignment
requires you to apply concepts studied in the course regarding a company of your choosing
within the industry for which you signed up.

    a. COMPANY CHOICE ESSAY: For students who wish to complete just a traditional
essay, follow this option. The industry essay requires you to apply concepts
studied in the course regarding a company of your choosing within the industry
for which you signed up (this means if you are in the social media industry you
must write about a social media company, not a company outside of this
    industry, for example, Nike).

    • The essay must be between 4 and 5 pages (not including your sources
page), double-spaced, and use no higher than 12-point font and 1-inch
margins. Your essay must be submitted as either a Microsoft Word
document (.doc or .docx) or Adobe .pdf document.

    b. Bonus (50 points): VIDEO PRESENTATION OPTION: For students who wish to
create a bonus video presentation option need to follow these instructions.
This option allows you to create a minimum five (3) minute video presentation
(PowerPoint, YouTube video, etc.) regarding a company of your choosing within
the industry for which you signed up (this means if you are in the social media
industry you must write about a social media company (ex: TikTok), not a
company outside of this industry, for example, Nike). Students must attach at
the end of their essay a YouTube link that allows the professor and the TA to
    watch your video.

For the paper, footnotes or endnotes are not required however, students must cite their
    sources using APA style citations.

    Paper Outline:

YOU MUST USE THE HEADINGS BELOW IN YOUR PAPER OR WRITTEN SUMMARY AND YOU
MUST ANSWER EACH QUESTION IN THE HEADING!!!

Your essay and bonus presentation must address each of the specific set of questions laid out
below. It must be divided into the following parts listed below. I am doing this to help
students better organize their thoughts when putting their essays together.

(Argument, Introduction, Problem, Implications, Analysis, Conclusion)

    1. Argument: What is your paper’s argument? Your argument paragraph (at least three to

four well-thought out sentences) will answer the following question: Has your company of
choice succeeded or failed to expand internationally?

    2. Introduction: Introduce the company – who/what are they and what do they do? What is
its history? How did they develop? How are they structured (multi- domestic, truly global, etc.)?

    3. Problem and Implications: What problem(s) did the business(es) face and what were the
primary causes? What additional factors affected the situation? How did the business(es) work
to solve the problem(s)? Were the business(es) successful in solving the problem(s)? Why or
why not? What are the potential implications of the issues the companies faced? In other
words, how did (or how will) the problem impact the business(es)?

    4. Analysis: How can the theories and concepts we have learned in class be applied to or
explain the situation? (At least two concepts from the class lectures topics)

    5. Conclusion: What is the international outlook for the company’s future (if you do not think
your company will expand internationally, you must give a reason why using the concepts we
    have studied this semester.)

    6. References Page (One page in addition to your four to five (4 – 5) page essay writing
requirement): List each of the sources you used to write your paper at the end of your paper.
This page does not count as a page of written text.

    Sources
You will need to use a wide variety of sources in this paper. You can use any of the following
sources (sources are not necessarily limited to this list, but you should only use REPUTABLE
sources): books, journal articles, news articles, and company websites. You should rely on a
diversity of sources, and every claim you make in the paper should be cited.

Sources MUST be properly cited throughout the paper using APA format. Please contact
your TA if you need further assistance. The following websites provide guides to help
students with writing techniques and styles and to help students properly cite their sources.

    Plagiarism
Plagiarism is taking somebody else’s words and passing them off as your own. IF YOU COPY
FROM A SOURCE OR ONLY CHANGE A FEW WORDS WITHOUT PROPERLY CITING THE
ORIGINAL SOURCE (IN QUOTATIONS FOR DIRECT QUOTES), THIS IS PLAGIARISM!!! THIS IS
A VIOLATION OF UH’S ACADEMICY HONESTY POLICY.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO PLAGARIZE (EITHER INTENTIONALLY OR UNINTENTIONALLY), YOU NOT
ONLY RUN THE RISK OF FAILING THE ASSIGNMENT, BUT YOU ALSO RUN THE RISK OF
FAILING THE ENTIRE COURSE AND POSSIBLY WORSE.

You must use your own words, properly cite everything that is not your own words, and use
as few quotes as possible. Please refer online (see websites above) to how to properly cite
sources (direct quotes, paraphrasing someone else’s quotes, etc.) Students will see point
deductions and worse for failing to cite sources.

It does not matter if you intended to plagiarize or not—if you try to pass somebody else’s
words off as your own, you will receive a ZERO for the final paper grade, possibly fail the
course grade or even referred to UH’s for academic dishonesty. Please see the course
syllabus under the heading “Academic Honesty” and the University of Houston’s Academic
    Honesty Policy (https://www.uh.edu/provost/policies-resources/honesty/) for more

    Assignment Point Deductions
Assignments that are turned in early or on time will be subject to point deductions if students
do not follow the assignment instructions. I trust the TAs when it comes to grading your
    assignments.

The following items will cause you to lose points on your assignments.

    1. If a student does not include an argument section for their paper, they will
automatically lose ten percent (10%) of the final paper grade.

    2. If you do not cite your sources, or if you use AI to help write your paper, you risk the
probability of failing this assignment. If students have a Turn-it-in similarity score over
twenty-five percent (25%), students will lose points. Please see Professor Johnson’s

Academic Honesty Guidelines on CANVAS for more details.

    3. If a student writes about a company outside of their industry choice, (for example, if
the student is in the social media industry and writes about Nike), and the student
does not get approval to write about the company from both their TA and Professor
Johnson that student WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOSE 50 PERCENT OFF THEIR FINAL ESSAY
GRADE! There is no exception to this rule. Period. If students have a question or
unsure if their company fits in their industry, they MUST CONTACT THE TA AND GET
APPROVAL TO WRITE ABOUT THEIR COMPANY OF CHOICE. If there is any question
about whether the company fits inside the student’s industry choice and the student
fails TO GET APPROVAL TO WRITE ABOUT THAT COMPANY BY BOTH THE TA AND
PROFESSOR JOHNSON, THERE WILL BE A 50 POINT DEDUCTION FROM THE STUDENT’S
    FINAL ESSAY GRADE.

    4. Ten percent (10%) of your assignment grade will be deducted for every page under the
minimum requirement (that means FULL written pages, and your works cited page
    does not count).

    5. Professor Johnson’s Academic Honesty Guidelines: If you do not cite your sources, of if
you use AI to help write your paper, you risk the probability of failing this assignment.
If you do not cite your sources, you risk the probability of failing this assignment or
worse. See the section labeled “Plagiarism” above for more details. If you do not
know how to cite your sources, contact your TA. Do not run the risk of failing this
assignment or worse because of intentional or unintentional academic dishonesty.

    6. If you cite the sources but forget the works cited page, 10% percent of your assignment
    grade will be deducted.

    7. If you cite the sources but do not use proper APA formatting, 5% percent of your final
    assignment grade will be deducted.

Grammar, Spelling and Simple Writing Techniques
You should write in complete sentences and in paragraph form. To help each of you with
writing techniques and common mistakes in writing, I have included with these instructions a
    helpful writing source.

I trust the TA when it comes to grading your papers. Assignments that seem unorganized or full
of grammatical or spelling errors, points will be deducted from the paper at the TA’s discretion.
If the paper is completely unreadable, the TA’s and the professor will discuss the student’s
paper to determine it is acceptable work or not. Any assignment deemed unacceptable will
    receive a 0.

To help students complete the best assignment possible, I have provided below a very good
source on how to effectively write a paper. This source has been used as a very effective and

simple tool for teaching students and nonstudents how to write effectively for over 100 years
(the book was originally published in 1918). You can find a copy of this book anywhere. I
highly suggest you purchase a copy.

    Source:
Strunk, William, and E. B. White. The Elements of Style. (originally published in 1918 but any
edition of the book will work)

Note of interest about one of the authors: If the name E.B. White rings a bell, it is because he
is the author of the world famous children’s story Charlotte’s Web (originally published in
    1952).

Copies of the Elements of Style are available for free almost anywhere online and several eBook
copies are available through the University of Houston library website.

Just do a simple search through the catalog to find a copy. For example, it is available through
    ProQuest Ebook Central,

the student is in the social media industry and writes about Nike), and the student
does not get approval to write about the company from both their TA and Professor

For example, it is available through
    ProQuest Ebook Central,
    https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/uh/detail.action?docID=1101189

You can also find an online copy of the book through Project Guttenberg here:

    ## HUM 102 Module Two Project Proposal Guidelines and Rubric

    ### Overview

In this course, we are exploring how the humanities teach us about each other and also about ourselves. Creative works allow us to make sense of our own identities as well as the world around us. They can serve as an entry point for understanding complicated topics. For this assignment, you will choose a topic (diversity, mental health, or activism) and two creative works that you will use to compare various subject areas of the humanities in relation to your chosen topic.

This assignment builds toward Part One of the project, and you will expand on this work in Module Four as you further analyze your chosen creative works. Before working on this assignment, consult the Project Guidelines and Rubric in the Supporting Materials section below.

    ### Directions

You will use the Project Template for this assignment and add to the same template for project drafts that you will complete in later modules. In Module Two, you will draft the first two components of Part One of your project using questions 1 and 2 of this template. In Modules Four and Five, you will complete different sections of the same template for the project drafts. Then in Module Seven, you will revise and compile your work on all sections of the template as the final project.

In this proposal, you will identify two creative works associated with your chosen topic (mental health, diversity, or activism). You will use these works and the topic throughout the term on the project drafts. The creative works must be from two different humanities subject areas listed below. These creative works can be selected from the list of works located in the Project Resources, linked in the Supporting Materials section below. Alternatively, you may choose to select two creative works that are not included in the provided list with your instructor’s approval.

You may choose from the following humanities subject areas:

    – Visual art (paintings, photographs, sculpture, architecture, drawing, film)
    – Performing arts (theater, dance, music, opera)
    – Literature (novels, poems, scripts for plays, short stories, song lyrics)

Specifically, you must address the following:

Specify which topic you have chosen to use throughout the project and the two creative works that you have chosen that fit that topic. Use the two creative works to compare various subject areas of the humanities in relation to your chosen topic. Address the following criteria in Part One:

    1. Creative Works: Describe the two creative works.

    1. Your chosen topic (mental health, diversity, or activism)
    2. The names of the chosen creative works
    3. The subject area of the humanities they fall under (visual, literary, or performing arts)

    – Understand the Topic: Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the topic.

    1. A. How do the different humanities subject areas you have chosen (visual, literary, or performing arts) approach the topic?

    ### What to Submit

    Use the
[Project Template](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/course_documents/HUM%20102%20Project%20Template.docx?isCourseFile=true) to create your Project Proposal and submit questions 1 and 2 from Part One for grading. You must cite your chosen creative works. If other sources are used, follow APA guidelines for citations both throughout and at the end of your paper. Keep in mind that for your completed project, you will need to cite two creative works that you chose as well as at least two resources used to research your topic (mental health, diversity, or activism). This submission includes creative works and resources provided in the Project Resources.

Although Brightspace allows the addition of video notes in assignment submissions, you may not use the Video Note tool to complete this assignment.

    ## HUM 102 Module Three Short Answer Assignment Guidelines and Rubric

    ### Overview

Many times, as we engage with a creative work, our own biases and assumptions creep into how we interpret the work. In many cases, this has to do with the topic the creative work portrays rather than the work itself. Everyone has biases and assumptions, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Our biases and assumptions come out of our experiences, perceptions, and observations. In this assignment, you will have a chance to analyze some of your own biases and assumptions regarding the topic you chose for your project.

    ### Directions

In this short answer assignment, you will consider the topic you chose for your project (diversity, mental health, or activism) in the Module Two Project Proposal and the assumptions or biases that you may have regarding this topic. You are considering your own position and opinions in this assignment. In Module Four, you will expand on those ideas by looking at the biases and assumptions in your creative works. You are welcome to consider the creative works in this assignment if you wish, but the focus of this assignment is the topic you’ve chosen, not the creative works.

Specifically, you must address the following:

    1. Perceptions and Observations: Describe some perceptions and observations present in your thinking regarding your chosen topic.

    1. What factors or experiences may have contributed to these perceptions?
    2. What is your prior knowledge about this particular topic?

    – Biases and Assumptions: Explain your own biases and assumptions regarding the topic you chose for your project.

    1. What biases and assumptions do you have about this topic?
    2. Where do you think those biases and assumptions influenced your perception?
    3. What are your stances on issues about the topic?

For this discussion post, I chose the ChatGPT and Copilot AI tools to compose a SWOT Analysis on Xponential Fitness. One of my favorite components of these tools is the provision of links which allow me to verify credibility, accuracy, and relevance. While researching a SWOT Analysis from ChatGPT and Copilot, I found many similarities between the two tools; however, the reference links from Copilot often directed to another AI platform, whereas ChatGPT used links often from the Xponential Fitness’ website.

Within the analysis, I noted that both included a core strength of brand diversity and global recognition. They also align with strong franchise models and digital integration. The two tools also report consistent themes within business weakness, such as a fragile franchise performance dependence and increased complexity due to multiple brand management. However, ChatGPT identifies operational and legal difficulties, while Copilot display pricing concerns from a consumer perspective, suggesting their differentiation strategy and premium brand image may be overestimated. Both consequences warrant a deeper dive to anthologize the facts.

Interestingly, both analyses converge regarding opportunities, highlighting international growth and rising interest in wellness initiatives. They also detail the digital offerings for hybrid fitness availability, providing combined access and scheduling to in-person and electronic classes. Additionally, ChatGPT and Copilot agree the biggest threats to Xponential Fitness include competition, economic cycles, and legal issues surrounding some franchises.

After careful consideration, a proper combination of these two analyses would include the following primary focal points:

    SWOT Analysis for Xponential Fitness

    Strengths

    Weaknesses

    • Diverse Multi-Brand Portfolio – Broad range of boutique fitness concepts (Pilates, barre, yoga, etc.) reduces dependence on single trends.

    • Global Scale and Recognition – Studios in 49 U.S. states and 30+ countries build brand visibility and credibility.

    • Reliance on Franchisee Success – Inconsistent performance affects systemwide stability.

    • Premium Pricing Limits Reach – High prices restrict access in cost-sensitive markets.

    • Operational Complexity – Managing many brands strains focus and efficiency.

    Opportunities

    Threats

    • International Expansion – Growth potential in Asia, Middle East, and Europe via master franchises.

    • Hybrid & Digital Fitness Growth – Combines studio experience with streaming platforms.

    • Intense Market Competition – Competing with gyms, boutiques, and digital fitness leaders.

    • Economic Downturns – Discretionary nature of boutique fitness exposes vulnerability.

    • Shift to At-Home Fitness – Sustained home workout demand impacts studio traffic.

For this week’s discussion, I used ChatGPT and Google Gemini to help me build a SWOT analysis for my company, Griffin Made LLC, which focuses on residential real-estate and property management in Killeen, Texas.

ChatGPT’s results highlighted internal strengths like affordability of Texas real estate, the use of VA loans for expansion, and the steady rental demand around Fort Hood. It also noted weaknesses such as limited property holdings and dependence on local market conditions. ChatGPT suggested using metrics like occupancy rate, monthly cash flow, and property appreciation percentages to measure performance.

Gemini’s output was similar but added more detail on external factors. It listed opportunities such as growing military housing demand and potential tax advantages for LLCs in Texas. It also pointed out threats like rising interest rates and higher property-maintenance costs. Gemini recommended tracking metrics such as cap rate, debt-to-equity ratio, and tenant retention rate.

After comparing both tools, here’s my finalized SWOT analysis:

    Strengths:

    1. Strong rental demand near Fort Hood

    2. Veteran ownership and access to VA financing

    Weaknesses:

    1. Limited property portfolio

    2. Reliance on one geographic area

    Opportunities:

    1. Expansion into multifamily investments

    2. Access to small-business and veteran-focused grants

    Threats:

    1. Rising property taxes and insurance costs

    2. Market fluctuations affecting rental rates

A real-life activity I’d love to analyze is the idea of offering yoga, Pilates, and even some personal training sessions on my farm plus maybe a little farm-life twist like goat yoga. Since I live on 13 acres on top of a mountain, the setting is already peaceful and scenic, which I think would make fitness feel more relaxing and enjoyable for people who want something different from a regular gym.

Before jumping into it, there are a lot of things I would need to look at. Some quantitative things include the cost of certifications, liability insurance, building a small studio or covered space, electrical work, equipment, and how much I could realistically charge for classes. Weather would also play a big part since outdoor sessions might not work year-round.

For the qualitative side, I’d have to figure out whether people in my community would actually be interested. Is this something folks around here would attend or is it more of a “fun idea but nobody’s coming” type of situation? I’d also want feedback on class types, times, and how far people are willing to drive up the mountain.

Financial analysis tools would help me see if this is something that would make sense long-term or just be an expensive hobby. And AI tools make it easier to compare typical class prices, research start-up costs, check trends in wellness and agritourism, and look at what similar farms are doing. It saves me a ton of time and gives me a clearer picture of what I’d be getting into.

Looking at everything together—costs, community interest, and the overall vibe—I can get a better idea of whether starting this little fitness-on-the-farm dream is something I should actually move forward with or if its just a dream.

For this topic, I chose to use something that I am currently working through in my day-to-day job. I am a Plant Manager for a company that engineers packaging, think corrugated boxes and all types of foam. We currently opened our newest plant here in Texas and so I am quoting a lot of new business, and this fits perfectly as each potential product requires a lot of analysis to determine if it would be good business for us to take on. For this to happen we need to consider quite a few factors.

First is the cost of raw materials. This exercise takes evaluating costs for raw materials. We evaluate the cost of buying the raw materials from a vendor already made, partially made or as blanks in which we would process them in house. Consideration has to be given to logistics in this process as the cost of moving materials can determine if the new product would be a profitable venture for us. Other factors that may be considered are inventory carrying costs, additional handling requirements for oversized or heavy items and any other outlying process that adds additional costs.

Secondly, I break down labor rates which can include temp labor, fulltime direct labor (which includes benefits) and any costs required for increasing headcount such as posting recs and interviewing candidates. The easiest Labor calculations come when the new product can be added to an existing production line without increasing headcount. In this case I simply use my current labor rate broken down by the time it takes to build one finished product multiplied by how many individuals are required.

Lastly, I factor in any non-inventory (not listed on the bill of materials) items that is required for the build. These items are not part of the raw material cost figured in step one. These can be staples, glue, fasteners, tape, or any other item used to build the product that is not included on the bill of materials (BOM).

Once I have my raw material cost, labor rate, and any additional costs needed for the build I can see how much one item will cost to build.

I then reach out to my team and they consider additional information that may help drive down costs. One example is the procurement team to see if we can save by purchasing our raw materials in large quantities to take advantage of large buy price points that help us save money. Our engineering department can also evaluate items required in the build, perhaps we can use two staples on each corner instead of four and the products integrity not be affected.

If we choose to proceed with the new product and begin running the item on our line, we continue evaluations finding ways to drive down costs. The biggest factor is increasing efficiency. Perhaps adding an automated glue system will decrease labor by eliminating one head count or reducing build time by 5 minutes each part. This evaluation is always taking place as part of the manufacturing process.

These continuous improvements lead to further analysis as the new equipment needs evaluation prior to purchase for understanding the time it takes for the return on initial investment, calculations on its depreciation each year, as well as what it costs to run the machine through any additional labor or skill set that needs to be employed.

Like any business, manufacturing is a constant exercise in data analysis. While I have been running through this with just having learned it along the way I am very excited to be putting the education and knowledge gained in this course and the courses to come with the processes I have been stumbling through up to this point.

Industry News Post Assignments Instructions and Grading Criteria
    [Fall 2025]

The purpose of these assignments is for each student to write a two-paragraph post
discussing a piece of international news regarding their chosen industry – this MUST be
one of the eight industries you picked in your introduction post.

Industry News Posts must be uploaded to the Turn-it-in Links named “Industry News
Post #2” in the Assignments Module in CANVAS before the due date.

Industry News Post #2 due by 4 pm (CST), Saturday, November 15

Grading Breakdown and Criteria for Assignments
The write-up needs to have two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, discuss a piece of
news that came out that week regarding the industry. In the second paragraph, assess
    the news source you used.

Maximum number of points for Each News Post = 50 points.

    – If nothing is turned in by the deadline = 0 points

    – If the post is made by the deadline, the 50 points are distributed as follows:

    – The first 20 points will be a link to a reputable news source with the publishing date
(see examples of reputable news sources in this syllabus). The TA must be able to
access the article to get credit!

    – The second 30 points relate to the two paragraphs required for the assignment.

    ● 15 points for the first paragraph where the piece of news is discussed; to get
full credit, you need to write a full paragraph (one sentence is not sufficient)
where you present a summary of the article you read/news segment you
listened to or watched; the article/news segment must have been published
within the last month; grammar and spelling mistakes will be penalized if they
    make the text difficult to follow;

    ● 15 points for the second paragraph where the source of news is analyzed.
what is the audience targeted by that news source; can you identify any

inherent biases that news source may have (for example: do they have an
agenda and if so, what is it; who is their target audience; do they have a
particular political leaning; do they express the views of the owner, who is the
owner and what are their views; are they pro- or against a particular industry,
country, or policy issue). This second paragraph can be shorter, sometimes a
couple of sentences may suffice as long as the required content is covered.

The Great Depression: Causes and Lived Experiences

    Johnnie Holloway

    University of Houston: Online Asynchronous

    HIST 1302

    Professor Mizelle

    October 19, 2025

    2

The Great Depression: Causes and Lived Experiences

One of the most terrible economic tragedies in American history was the Great

Depression that began in 1929 and continued most during the 1930s. Although the Stock Market

Crash of October 1929 can be considered the event that led to the Depression, the reasons were

much deeper and more complicated, and they were built over several decades. Depression

transformed American life, and millions of people remained jobless, homeless, and desperate. To

comprehend its effect, one has to consider two primary causes: the crashing of the banking

system and the purchasing power loss, as well as look at two examples of lived experience in this

period: life in Hoovervilles and the Dust Bowl migration.

The breakdown of the banking system was one of the reasons that led to the great

depression. Banks of the 1920s took dangerous loans and overinvested in the stock market. As

the market crashed, both individuals and institutions lost huge sums of money. Fear gripped the

country, and withdrawal of savings began, and bank failures were common. Most of the life

savings of millions of people were lost overnight in the absence of federal insurance (the FDIC

was not in existence until 1933). The breakdown of the banking system also rendered businesses

helpless since they could no longer get credit to settle workers or even make investments in

production. This increased mass layoffs, reduction in wages, and further economic contraction

(Romer, 2003). The collapse of financial institutions demonstrated the inconsistency of the

uncontrolled economy and showed how easily the panic could transform a recession into a full-

    blown depression.

    3

The other significant reason was the loss of purchasing power among the common

Americans. The income inequality grew exponentially in the 1920s as corporate profits

increased, and the wages of most workers remained stable. The people of America were not able

to buy goods produced, and this formed an unsustainable economic imbalance. With the increase

in unemployment following the crash, the consumer demand decreased even more. Factories

reduced their work or even closed down, and this further increased job losses, which is referred

to as the vicious circle of deflation. This particularly affected the farmers who had been facing

weak prices for their crops following World War I. With the prices of wheat, cotton, and corn

crashing down, a large number of people could no longer afford their debts, and they were

unable to retain their lands as they were foreclosed (U.S. History.org, 2023). The decline in

purchasing power in urban and rural America transformed a financial crisis into a depression.

The financial meltdown was truly disastrous to everyday living. A clear indication of the

lived experience during this era was the emergence of Hoovervilles, improvised shantytowns

named after President Herbert Hoover, whom many residents held responsible as the cause of the

crisis. In countries, the jobless constructed houses using scrap wood, tin, and cardboard, and

concentrated in the outskirts of the cities. Families in these communities were also able to share

what they had little of, scavenge, and survive on charity. Hoovervilles were a synonym of the

depression despair; however, they represented the strength and unity of the ordinary American

    who struggled collectively(Romer, 2003).

The other experience that was defining experience was the Dust Bowl that struck the

Great Plains in the early 1930s. According to the lecture, The Dust Bowl, many years of extreme

drought and bad farming techniques wiped out millions of acres of farmland. The dry topsoil was

blown away by strong winds, and it formed huge dust storms that darkened the skies and buried

    4

the homes. The farmers lost their livelihood, crops, and livestock. Families in the thousands (they

were known as Okies because of the former home state of Oklahoma) flocked to California in

search of employment. Some of them became migrant workers residing in tents or camping, and

were discriminated against and impoverished. Not only was the Dust Bowl an ecological

disaster, but also a human disaster, as economic and ecological disasters became one to overturn

whole communities. In conclusion, the great depression was provoked by profound structural

flaws in the American economy, especially the failure of the banking system and the massive

destruction of buying power. It had a tremendous human price, witnessed in the proliferation of

Hoovervilles and the misery of Dust Bowl migrants.
