    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

I need a response to this discussion post. I will post the discussion that needs a response, then I will place the rubric and instructions below:
Disscusion post: Given the information provided in the case study, I believe this individual suffers from Sickle cell disease (SCD).  According to Rare Disease Advisor, SCD is an autosomal mutation of the hemoglobin chain on chromosome 11 that causes red blood cells to be misshapen and occurs mostly in non-Hispanic Black individuals (Habet, n.d., p. 1).  I came to this conclusion after losing at the peripheral smear of the blood sample provided that showed sickled cells, target cells, and Howell-Jolly bodies which are hallmarks of sickle cell disease with splenic injury along with the patient’s complaint of severe pain with multiple episodes reported over the last year.
    **Genetic mutations associated with SCD**
SCD is a genetic mutation in and of itself, however there are a few genetic mutation types of SCD.  “The most prevalent types of sickle cell disease are sickle cell anemia, sickle cell-thalassemia disease, and sickle cell-HbC disease” (Rogers, 2023, p. 997).  Each of these disorders are considered autosomal recessive disorders that affect the hemoglobin cell causing it to be mishappen.
    **Presenting Symptoms**
Within the case study provided, the patient presents with complaints of severe pain that started in his legs and has gone to his back with no known trauma.  The patient reports that he has had similar episodes of the same over the past year that were associated with dehydration or infection.  These are pertinent symptoms to SCD because the “sickling process is an occasional intermittent phenomenon that can be triggered by stressors such as decreased oxygen tension of the blood, acidosis, increased plasma osmolality, decreased plasma volume, and low temperature” (Rogers, 2023, p. 997).  The sickled shape of the hemoglobin molecule causes microvascular occlusion which results in pain for the patient.  When the patient describes his previous episodes there is a stressor identified that would start the sickle cascade and then would result in pain as the sickle cells cause the microvascular occlusions.
    **Pathophysiology of SCD**
As stated previously, SCD is a genetic recessive condition involving the hemoglobin molecule.  “Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes the beta-globin chain of the hemoglobin molecule. This mutation results in the formation of sickle hemoglobin (HbS), which has the unique feature of polymerizing on deoxygenation.1 Because of a single base-pair point mutation (GAG to GTG) in the beta-globin gene, the amino acid glutamic acid (which is hydrophilic) is replaced by valine (which is hydrophobic) at position 6 of the beta-globin molecule, resulting in the formation of HbS” (Habet, n.d., section 8).
    **Disease and disease progression**
In evaluating the blood work provided for this case study there are many things that are concerning related to sickle cell disease.  The patient presents with decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit, significantly below normal levels.  This can indicate that the patient has anemia and given the peripheral smear results it can be thought that the patient may be Sickle cell anemia which is the most severe form of SCD.  He also has an elevated WBC count which may be indicative of an infection, which can be the stressor the body needs to start the sickle cell cascade that may result in the cause of the patient’s pain.  He also has an elevated bilirubin which can be indicative of liver damage.  Also, the presence of Howell-Jolly bodies in the peripheral smear is indicative of splenic damage with SCD.  With this information I would conclude that this patient has a severe form of SCD that has started to cause significant organ damage which means that the disease is progressing to cause irreversible damage to the patient's organs.

    **Understanding Business Structures**

The 21st century is changing the way many organization owners do business. One fundamental change that affects business is the rapid growth of technology, which is harnessed in innovative and competitive ways to reach consumers via social media and websites. The role of artificial intelligence and how it can affect or facilitate business is just not being discovered. Another critical change involves an increasingly transparent and socially conscious world. Modern consumers expect much from a business regarding social responsibility, quality, and dependability. For example, social responsibility includes consistently creating diverse and equitable work environments, green awareness such as recycling, and reducing the company's carbon footprint. The pandemic challenged many organizations to re-think how businesses should operate, from remote workplaces to a move to a more robust online marketplace.

As you work through this week, you will learn the foundations of setting up a 21st-century business by understanding structures that will deliver the best outcome for the owners. As noted in sba.gov, business structures remain the same, except for adding a sub-type S (that meets specific IRS requirements) and C (where owners or stakeholders are taxed separately from the entity) to corporations.

There are seven main structures to consider choosing for a business and three different types of corporate structures. Depending on the company's mission and vision, the owner must decide which structure is best suited for their business. A structure can be changed through the state legal system. Different structures provide owners more legal protection and tax benefits than others, as you will notice when reviewing irs.gov.

Hover your mouse over each business structure to learn more.

    ·
**Sole Proprietor** – A business run by the owner; it is the most used structure.

    ·
**Partnership** – A business owned and managed by two or more people.

    ·
**Limited partnership** – A business that a general partner with unlimited liability runs. Any other partners have limited liability in the business.

    ·
**LLC**– Limited Liability Company protects the owner(s) from losing personal assets in most cases.

    ·
**Non-Profit** – 501(c)(3) has special IRS tax-exempt status and is organized to do charity or other specific work.

    ·
**Co-Op** – A cooperative business is owned and organized by the people using its services.

    ·
**Corporation**– C Corp is a legal entity and exists separately from the owner(s).

    ·
**Subchapter S corporations**– S Corp are taxed on a "flow-through" basis. This means that tax liabilities from income are passed onto the corporations' shareholders to be declared individually.

    ·
**B Corporation** – also B Lab or B Corp is a private certification of for-profit companies of their "social and environmental performance."

Your resources for this week will explain these in detail. You may do additional research to explore business structures further.

Use the APA guidelines (7th ed.) to write and format papers, including a title page, content headings, and a reference page.

    **ASC Mission and Vision**

    **Mission:**

The mission of the Academic Success Center (ASC) is to support students through the process of learning and developing their identities as scholars and practitioners.

    **Vision:**

The Academic Success Center strives to promote academic achievement by working collaboratively with students and faculty to promote learning and engagement as lifelong consumers of knowledge.

    **History**

The Academic Success Center (ASC) launched in June 2014. In the beginning, sessions were focused on assisting students with writing and statistics assignments. In 2016, a major paradigm shift occurred during which the center moved away from a tutoring model focusing on a specific deliverable toward an academic coaching model with a focus on skill development. During the same year, the live chat feature launched, providing students with a venue to ask quick questions and receive immediate assistance. Two years later, the Academic Success Center transitioned the ASC Chat service and website to the Springshare platform. The new platform provided students with more modes (text, email, and live chat) to access ASC services.

The data-driven refinement and expansion of the services available in the ASC is an ongoing process. In FY20, the ASC expanded the hours that the chat service was available to include evenings and weekends. During that same time, the number of interactive weekly group sessions increased from 17 to 25, and individual coaching opportunities were increased to meet the needs of the NU community. One of the most notable additions to the ASC during FY20 was the expansion of support to include legal writing. In addition to the ongoing expansion of services, during FY21, the ASC launched a proofreading service to support students working to prepare their dissertation manuscripts for publishing.

[Open activity in a new window](https://navigate.nu.edu/content/enforced/18677-MBA510-65894-2512/module-1/MBA510_Module-1/story.html?ou=18677)

    · Challenge students to become active participants in their academic journey.

    · Serve as a model of expertise for personalized online academic support known for inspiring student success by offering collaborative and inclusive student-centered assistance.
