    **Paper #1 (Exposition)**

Paper #1 is an exposition. Exposition is a form of writing where the main goal is explanation. It will be your job to find and narrow a topic sufficiently so that an in-depth discussion of it is possible in 5 – 8 pages, research that topic and document your research, write a carefully planned expository paper, and revise that paper to the proper academic standard
    **.**

The topic you chose for this paper will be used for your second paper (argument) and the final paper (argument +). I sometimes allow students to change topics for the second paper (but you should check with me) because the first paper is primarily providing context for the arguments to come. What is transferred to paper #2 is usually introductory, and the paper provides you with a substantive understanding of the topic and the common knowledge involved.

Thesis statements obviously vary, but for the first paper, you will want something that allows you to explain as much as argue. This is sometimes called a
_soft argument_. For example, if I had chosen octopi as my broad topic, I might narrow things down to the unusual evolutionary development of octopi to allow for deeper exploration in the space allowed. The thesis statement might look something like this
_: “Octopuses and some squid have followed a substantially different evolutionary path than most animals seeming to have left their evolutionary forebears far behind them in several adaptations, particularly in their neurological development.”_

**Due: Friday. 09/26 (at the end of the day) for full credit. After that, it is considered late and subject to a 5% penalty.**

There will be several steps to this, and particularly with this first paper, I will try to help you stay on track, but the resulting paper will need to do the following:

    ·
Be 5 – 8 pages long not including the appropriate style’s end list of sources

    ·
Include appropriate in-text academic citation style and source list

    ·
Include at least three scholarly sources that go beyond foundational knowledge
_These sources will be appropriately cited within the text, and all sources (cited or consulted) will be included in appropriate end list._

    · Address the topic with a depth appropriate for an academic work

    · Supply what background is needed, and only what is needed, for an academic reader

    · Include a thesis statement that properly directs the paper and answers a focused research question

    · Leave no obvious gaps or lingering questions for the reader

    · Follow a clear and logical train of thought at both the local and global levels without straying from the thesis

    · Carefully adhere to the conventions of grammar, usage, and mechanics as well as the formats required for the class and style type used.

    **Paper #2 (Argument)**

Paper #2 is an argument. This argument should have some connection to the exposition paper, but it should make a separate assertion that takes things further and requires more evidence. For example, if I had chosen the thesis statement
_“Octopi and some squid have followed a substantially different evolutionary path than most animals seeming to have left their evolutionary forebears far behind them in several adaptations, particularly in their neurological development.”_ For Paper #1, then I might decide to narrow things to the nervous system for paper #2 because I’ve seen much more in the scholarly sources on this topic. In paper #1 I explained how octopuses diverged from other mollusks substantially and tied this in some ways to behaviors they have or niches they inhabit, To develop this idea I’ve come up with this thesis:
_“Darwin suggested that evolution was driven by survival of the fittest; if that’s true, then it seems that octopuses at some point found their survival dependent on increasing sophistication particularly in the evolution of their nervous system.”_ This might need to change as I move forward, but I do have a plan for how to move forward, broadly.

This paper should be 6 – 9 pages long and follow the instructions below. It is expected that some of what you’ve done will be integrated into paper #2 if only to provide introductory info. I have found a good way to start is to ask yourself if what you did in paper #1 could be condensed down (summarized briefly) into the introduction before the thesis statement for paper #2. That doesn’t mean that other parts might not be useful, but you should be taking information more than sections of text. Remember, you have a new thesis making a different type of claim, and you must stay focused on that.

There will be several steps to this, but the resulting paper will need to do the following:

    · Be 6-9 pages long not including the appropriate style’s end list of sources

    ·
Include appropriate in-text academic citation style and source list

    ·
Include at least three more scholarly sources (a total of six) that go beyond foundational knowledge and provide support for your thesis. Some of these new sources must be from peer reviewed journals.

    · Follow a clear and logical train of thought at both the local and global levels without straying from the topic

    · Carefully adhere to the conventions of grammar, usage, and mechanics as well as the formats required for the class.

    Paper #1

Although the NBA was created in 1946, African Americans were excluded from playing until the year 1950. Once African American players were able to play, they displayed a massive, new, and intriguing way to play the game of basketball. Black people showed that their way of playing basketball was and is going to be the way everyone plays the game of basketball. Through their innovative playing styles, captivating performances, and advocacy for social change, African American basketball players have profoundly shaped the sports style, boosted its global popularity, and influenced culture both on and off the court.

Basketball was created in late 1891 by a man named James Naismith. James first introduced the sport to the community of what is now called Springfield College while he was an instructor there. As you can imagine, basketball was exceptionally different back then. It was originally used with a soccer ball with the different skills from American football, soccer, and hockey. When the game was first invented, teams had nine players, and the goal was a wooden basket nailed to the walls. Later, the game evolved to what it is now. Teams having 5 players became standard around 1897, it became an indoor and outdoor sport, and it also became popular between both men and women.

By 1895, many U.S colleges had adopted this sport which made it increasingly popular. Then by the 1950’s, basketball had become a major sport in college, which in turn paved the route for the growth of professional basketball. In 1949, two major leagues named the National Basketball League, and the Basketball Association of America later joined forces to create what is now the NBA (National Basketball Association). After the NBA was created, it was not popular until years after. This is mostly because once black people were allowed to join the league, they showed their distinctive styles of playing, their distinctive cultural ways on and off the court, and their distinctive swag on and off the court.

In 1950, once the blacks were allowed to join the league, Earl Lloyd changed the game forever by suiting up for the Washington Capitols. In a league that was previously talent judged by race, it had been completely shattered from the actions of one person. Earl Llyod. He proved that skill had no color— more importantly no race. Earl opened the door for many more African Americans to participate and earn their way to the league. By doing this, Earl was making a commanding statement by challenging old prejudices and sacrificing himself to prove people wrong. Lloyd’s impact goes way beyond his stats. He helped shape the NBA into a more inclusive and exciting place, paving the legacy of equality in the league. He was not just a player; he was a person who broke the NBA’s color barrier.

Black players have undeniably revolutionized basketball with their groundbreaking, exciting, and inventive style of play. Black players brought a new level of athleticism, creativity, and flair to the game. For instance, LeBron James is a world-renowned basketball player who has been competing at a high level for over twenty years in the NBA. He has shaped the game exclusively by his style of play by being dominant, his physicality, and his IQ. Many people respect LeBron James to the point that he is considered in the G.O.A.T conversation. Another great player who has shaped the game is Stephen Curry. Steph has altered the game in ways that people did not even believe was possible. At a certain point in the NBA, the goal was to get downhill, run somebody over, and put the ball in the hoop. In this generation, players are working on their footwork, dancing with the ball, and taking highly contested step back three pointers. Steph Curry is the reason for this. He converts on this so much that people want to be like him. Many people try to even do his celebrations. His “Night Night” celebration. His no look three celebration. It is honestly just ridiculous at how much Steph Curry has changed the game by just doing his strength— shooting the basketball. After Steph Curry, the NBA has seen a major increase in 3-point shots attempted. In 2010-2011, that percentage rose from 22.9% to 39.2% in the 2024-2025 season. From inventive shot making ability, crazy ball handling skills, and the acrobatic dunking, black people have consistently redefined what is possible on the court. This influence has not only shaped the sport in the United States but also has resonated globally, inspiring players and fans worldwide to embrace a more expensive and dynamic approach.

African Americans in basketball have used their visibility and name to advocate for change in several powerful ways to influence the world globally. Many have spoken out against racial injustice and police brutality, which has gotten undeniable common these days. These players have used their platforms to intensify excluded voices and demand that people take accountability for the actions that have been shown in recent times. These players aren't just balling on the court—they are using their popularity to actually address certain issues that matter. Most importantly, they are making sure everyone is held accountable for their actions, especially when things go sideways or off the walls. Also, they are all about helping the next generation by protecting schools, scholarships, and local programs to give young people a fair shot at life. Some players are even hitting the streets, protesting, organizing events, and supporting politicians who are serious about fairness. Just last year, Steph Curry publicly voiced his vote for Kamala Harris and promoted others to vote for her as well. People like LeBron James, with his "I PROMISE" school, and legends like Bill Russell, who stood up against segregation back in the day, show how committed they are. Even Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who took a stand, by not standing for the anthem which sparked controversy but, arose awareness, and Maya Moore, who put her career on hold to fight for justice, prove that these players are serious about shaking things up, both in the basketball world and way beyond! These players exemplify how influential figures in basketball have leveraged their status to push for societal improvements, challenge injustices, and inspire widespread action. Through these diverse efforts, all these African American players have demonstrated a commitment to driving meaningful change both within and beyond the basketball world.

Black people have also profoundly shaped and boosted the popularity of the sport basketball. Despite constantly fighting backlash, limited opportunities, and racial segregation, they have continued to excel in the league and other places to showcase their talents. For example, the Harlem Globetrotters are perfect people to describe how African Americans have boosted the popularity and swag of the game itself. Through their entertaining performances and exciting styles, they have endured the role of making the sport more popular around the world. This era of basketball laid the groundwork for the eventual combination of black players playing in different leagues across the world and even creating their own leagues.

While it took a while for black players to integrate into the NBA and other major leagues, once they did integrate icons like Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlin, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and even Michael Jordan dominated the game. These players have all set unbreakable records, won multiple championships, and achieved many individual awards. Their on-court achievements broke the racial barriers that were in the way and even challenged people’s mindset, inspiring a new generation of basketball. A new way of playing the game. A new way of learning the game. A new way of practicing the game. A new way of the sport basketball. Furthermore, these players specifically became cultural icons using their platforms for inspiring the new generation of hoops not only in the big leagues but in small places as well.

Black players have not just shown that sport is all that matters to them. Icons, non-icons, it does not matter. Players that do not have the loudest and most popular fanbase still use their platform for good to express the needs of the community. It has extended to the younger black people joining the league to make it their duty, since the torch has passed to put in the work on and off the court to show that if people come together, a lot of good things can happen. Although it started generations ago, many people are stepping up to showcase that they are not afraid to do what is right.

Ultimately, the integration of African American players into the NBA marked not only their entrance into the league, but into the league of its own. It was a transformative era that shaped how everyone plays the sport and how they take the lessons on the court and apply them to everyday use. Their impact extends far beyond the court. Fundamentally, mentally, and physically there is a new era of basketball because of black people. African American players have reshaped the game’s aesthetics, elevating its global appeal, and catalyzing significant cultural and social shifts resonate to this very day.

    **## Paper1expoo.docx**

    **## INSTRUCTIONSPG.docx**

    **INSTUCTIONS**

    · Follow a clear and logical train of thought at both the local and global levels without straying from the topic

    · Carefully adhere to the conventions of grammar, usage, and mechanics as well as the formats required for the class.

    Carter3

    Introduction
    Company Profile

A leading nonprofit healthcare organization in the US, Kaiser Permanente integrates health
insurance, hospitals, and medical groups into a unified system. The company was founded in
1945 by businessman Henry J. Kaiser and physician Dr. Sidney Garfield to provide affordable
medical treatment to workers on huge industrial projects and wartime shipyards. Kaiser
Permanente, headquartered in Oakland, California, serves over 12 million members in eight
states and DC. The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. offers insurance, Kaiser Foundation
Hospitals oversee inpatient treatment and facilities, and Permanente Medical Groups provide
direct patient care. This framework streamlines healthcare, insurance, and preventive services.
Quality, affordability, and innovation are hallmarks of Kaiser Permanente, especially in digital
health technologies and EMRs. The organization sets evidence-based, patient-centered care
standards with over 23,000 physicians and 200,000 workers. It leads the nation in healthcare
outcomes, preventive medicine, and community health improvement with its integrated
    approach.
    Mission and Vision

Kaiser Permanente's objective is to promote members' and communities' health via
high-quality, affordable health care. This mission emphasizes equity, accessibility, and
prevention, ensuring that healthcare promotes lifetime wellbeing rather than just treating illness.
Kaiser streamlines coordination and reduces costs by integrating health insurance, hospitals, and
physician organizations. Investment in community health projects and tackling social
determinants of health to produce healthier, more resilient populations is part of their social
    obligation.

The organization strives to lead complete health with patient-centered, creative, and
sustainable care. Kaiser Permanente uses technology, data analytics, and evidence-based
practice to lead modern healthcare. Since true health comprises the full person and community,
its vision includes mental, social, and environmental well-being as well as clinical care. Kaiser
Permanente is to provide quality care that is universally accessible, equitable, and driven by
innovation that improves individual and population health outcomes, guided by its core values of
    integrity, compassion, excellence, and inclusiveness.
    Brief History

Kaiser Permanente was created in 1945 by entrepreneur Henry J. Kaiser and physician Dr.
Sidney Garfield from a 1930s and WWII prepaid medical plan for construction and shipyard
workers. Health care was changed by the organization's integrated insurance, hospital, and
physician model, which emphasized prevention, coordination, and accessibility. Kaiser became
a national managed care leader in the 1950s and 1960s by expanding beyond California. In
subsequent decades, the organization pioneered HMOs and became noted for its preventive
medicine and community health efforts. Kaiser Permanente led healthcare technology in the 21st
century by creating one of the first comprehensive EMR systems and growing telehealth
services. In eight states and Washington, D.C., Kaiser Permanente provides integrated,

patient-centered care to over 12 million members and leads in innovation, sustainability, and
    health equity.
    Performance Analysis
    Financial Performance

Kaiser Permanente is one of the most financially secure US nonprofits. The company's
2023 sales exceeded $100 billion, despite inflation and post-pandemic cost pressures (Davis et
al., 2023). Despite pandemic-related reductions, its net income recovered, demonstrating its
financial resilience and cost management. More than 12 million people in several states are
joining. Kaiser's integrated model—health insurance, hospital services, and physician
networks—cuts administrative costs and improves care coordination. This innovative model
allows continual investing in technology, infrastructure, and community health programs,
aligning profitability with mission-driven care delivery rather than shareholder profits.
    Market Share

Kaiser Permanente controls individual and group insurance in California's managed care
industry. It also affects the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, and the Mid-Atlantic. The integrated
approach gives the company an edge over traditional insurance and hospital networks. Kaiser
consistently ranks among the top five U.S. healthcare providers in membership and service
delivery, according to industry statistics. High member retention rates, driven by excellent
patient outcomes and brand trust in quality, price, and accessibility, promote its market
    expansion.
    Analyst Ratings

Financial and healthcare analysts consider Kaiser Permanente a model for sustainable
healthcare. With good liquidity, varied revenue streams, and conservative management, Moody's
and Standard & Poor's rate the organization's credit outlook as stable. U.S. News & World
Report and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) typically rank Kaiser
hospitals among the best for patient safety, chronic illness management, and preventative care.
    Environmental and Social Performance

Kaiser Permanente leads corporate social responsibility and sustainability nationwide. It
became the first U.S. healthcare institution to become carbon neutral in 2020, showcasing its
environmental stewardship (Shin et al., 2025). It heavily funds renewable energy, waste
reduction, and sustainable hospital design. Kaiser invests billions in community health efforts to
address food insecurity, homelessness, and health inequities. Its commitment to diversity,
inclusivity, and workforce well-being solidifies its status as a socially responsible healthcare
provider that combines economic performance with public value and environmental
    responsibility.

    External Environment Analysis
    General Environment
Kaiser Permanente operates within a complex and dynamic general environment influenced by
political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental, and legal factors. These

PESTEL elements shape the organization’s strategic decisions, financial performance, and ability
    to deliver high-quality, affordable care.

Political concerns are important because the organization relies on government healthcare
programs. Kaiser Permanente gained membership and compliance requirements from the
Affordable Care Act (ACA). Medicare, Medicaid, and reimbursement policy changes affect its
operations. Kaiser aligns with changing national healthcare goals through health policy
    advocacy.

Economic conditions impact Kaiser's performance. The industry faces financial
challenges from inflation, labor expenses, and insurance reimbursements. By integrating
insurance, hospital, and physician services, Kaiser's integrated approach reduces costs and
improves efficiency. Its nonprofit status and cost keep memberships up during recessions.

Kaiser's service delivery tactics are shaped by demographics, chronic disease rates, and
cultural diversity. The organization meets community needs through preventative care, health
    education, and culturally sensitive services.

Technological, environmental, and legal reasons boost Kaiser's growth. Kaiser pioneered
electronic medical records and telehealth to improve patient care and efficiency. It leads to
environmental sustainability through carbon neutrality. HIPAA and healthcare standards protect
patient privacy, safety, and confidence in all activities.
    Industry Environment (Porter’s Five Forces)

Kaiser Permanente operates in a highly competitive and regulated healthcare industry
where Porter’s Five Forces—threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining
power of buyers, threat of substitutes, and industry rivalry—collectively determine the
    organization’s strategic positioning and profitability.

    1. Threat of New Entrants
The threat of new entrants in the healthcare industry is relatively low due to high capital

requirements, stringent regulatory standards, and the need for established infrastructure and
expertise. Building an integrated model like Kaiser Permanente’s, which combines hospitals,
insurance plans, and medical groups, requires substantial investment and years of coordination.
Additionally, strict compliance with federal and state health regulations and accreditation
standards serves as a barrier to entry. However, emerging digital health startups and telemedicine
providers represent a moderate threat as they offer innovative, lower-cost alternatives that could
disrupt traditional models of care delivery.
    2. Bargaining Power of Suppliers

Kaiser Permanente’s supplier power is moderate. The organization relies on pharmaceutical
companies, medical equipment manufacturers, and technology providers. Due to its large scale
and integrated structure, Kaiser has strong negotiating leverage to secure favorable pricing for
drugs, medical supplies, and technology contracts. Long-term partnerships with suppliers and the
ability to purchase in bulk reduce costs. Nonetheless, supply chain disruptions and regulatory
pressures in the pharmaceutical sector can influence prices and availability.
    3. Bargaining Power of Buyers

The bargaining power of buyers—patients, employers, and government programs—is high.
Consumers are increasingly informed, cost-conscious, and have access to multiple healthcare
options. Employers and government agencies that purchase group health plans demand
value-based care and price transparency. To maintain loyalty, Kaiser emphasizes high-quality,
preventive, and patient-centered care. Its integrated system and strong reputation help mitigate
buyer power by offering convenience and consistent outcomes that enhance member retention.
    4. Threat of Substitutes

The threat of substitutes is moderate. Alternative healthcare options such as urgent care
clinics, telemedicine platforms, and retail health centers provide consumers with more flexible
and lower-cost services. Kaiser mitigates this threat by investing heavily in telehealth, remote
monitoring, and preventive care programs, making its services more accessible and efficient.
    5. Industry Rivalry

Industry rivalry is intense. Major competitors include UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health
(Aetna), Anthem (Elevance Health), and HCA Healthcare. These organizations compete on cost,
quality, technology, and service accessibility. Kaiser’s integrated model, nonprofit status, and
focus on preventive care offer differentiation, but the industry’s consolidation trend and
technological disruption sustain ongoing competitive pressure.
    Opportunities and Threats Summary

As healthcare evolves, Kaiser Permanente has many potential for innovation and growth as
well as substantial external dangers that require strategic management. Key opportunities and
dangers are listed below, along with extensive descriptions of how they relate to the
    organization's mission and strategic goals.

    Opportunities

    1. Growth in telehealth and AI integration: Virtual care has grown post-pandemic,
providing Kaiser Permanente the ability to improve access, convenience, and efficiency
with AI-driven analytics and remote monitoring. This supports the organization's
strategic goal of high-quality, tech-enabled care.

    2. Expansion into new states: Expansion outside eight states and D.C. would diversify
membership and boost national presence. Kaiser's expansion supports its objective to
    improve community health and affordability.

    3. Partnerships with tech companies: Google and Epic Systems partnerships could
improve data management, digital diagnostics, and patient involvement. Such
partnerships improve Kaiser's technology-integrated care delivery strategy.

    4. Increased focus on preventive care: Kaiser's longstanding focus on prevention can lead
population health management and minimize long-term costs, boosting its value-based
care model as chronic diseases rise.

    5. Sustainability leadership initiatives: Kaiser's carbon neutrality and sustainable
operations boost brand reputation and meet customer and regulator environmental
    requirements.

    Threats
Kaiser Permanente is facing several external issues that may lead to its inability to survive

in the long term and offer high-quality, affordable care. Healthcare costs are challenging because
of inflation, expensive medical technologies, and increased pharmaceutical prices. These
variables increase the operations cost and leave Kaiser to strike a balance between profitability
and affordability. The unpredictable alterations in federal and state health policies such as
insurance requirements, payment plans, and privacy limits might interfere with the planning and
resource distribution. The organization's extensive usage of online health platforms and
electronic medical data raises cybersecurity and privacy concerns. Data breaches can result in

fines, patient distrust, and reputational damage. Kaiser must innovate to compete with
UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health, and Anthem. Staff shortages from burnout and aging threaten
service quality and efficiency. Such risks demand proactive cost management, cybersecurity
resistance, personnel investment, and policy flexibility to ensure Kaiser Permanente's success
and mission to provide inexpensive and quality healthcare.

Kaiser's service delivery tactics are shaped by demographics, chronic disease rates, and

electronic medical records and telehealth to improve patient care and efficiency. It leads to
environmental sustainability through carbon neutrality.

This project measures your mastery of ULOs 2.1, 3.5, and 3.6.

**Assignment Objective:** In this project, you will be opening your own specialty cookie company to see how product costing methods and changes in production affect business decisions. You will be creating a series of reports and analyzing the results using the template provided to guide you through the project. You will:

    1. Gain an understanding of product costing (direct materials, direct labor, and overhead).

    2. Review job order costing.

    3. Review process costing.

    4. Make business decisions based on analyzing accounting data.

**Length:** You will prepare a three- to four-page written report (including spreadsheets) using the Unit III Project Template.

**References:** At least two peer-reviewed sources are required. Resources used are required to be scholarly/academic in nature and found in the CSU Library. APA Style is required for citations and references.

**Details:** First, start the paper with an introduction section per the assignment template provided above.

Part 1: Establish a cookie business selling only one type of specialty cookie with two employees making the cookies.

    · Create a name and establish a location for the business.

    · Construct a mission statement for the business.

    · Decide on the type of cookie you want to make and sell.

Part 2: Develop costing and sales information for 1,000 cookies (this is the first and only order).

    · Estimate and explain the cost per cookie based on job order costing (manufacturing overhead is 30% of direct labor costs). Prepare a job order cost sheet by researching and identifying the top five ingredients and their estimated costs as your direct materials. Research and identify the cost of wages for your two employees as your direct labor. It typically takes two days to make 1,000 cookies.

    · For process costing, examine the costs per 1,000 cookies looking at these top three processes (departments): Mixing, Add-ins, Packaging.

    · The Mixing Department will be examined in depth (only do this department).

    · All materials will be added in at the beginning of the process.

    · The cookies will be in the Mixing Department for a total of 8 hours (use two employees, 4 hours each as your direct labor). The cookies will be 100% complete with respect to materials, and only be 40% complete with respect to conversion costs (labor and overhead) before they are transferred to the Add-ins Department. Manufacturing overhead is 30% of direct labor costs.

    · Estimate and explain the sales price you plan to set per cookie based on the cost data.

Part 3: Define job order and process costing. Then, compare and contrast the costing methods used in this project (job order vs. process costing), including which you believe provides the most useful information as a manager.

Part 4: Discuss what will happen to revenue if the number of the cookies sold increases or decreases.

End this paper with the key observations and present any future recommendations.

    Use the
Unit III Cookie Project Spreadsheet Templates for your job order, and process costing spreadsheets to be embedded in your case study document.

**Submission:** Save the submission as a Word document and upload the document to Blackboard.

**Grading:** The assignment will be reviewed in alignment with the grading rubric criteria. The assignment is worth 15% of your course grade.

Management Applications of Accounting ACC 5301 Unit III Project

    **Unit III Project**

    **Cookie Business**

    Unit Lesson

    Introduction

During the pandemic, most employees worked remotely unless they were considered essential workers (vital
to operations), but learning and training still had to move forward in organizations. In an effort to meet the
need, most organizations focused on virtual and online training delivery methods for remote employees. Since
the pandemic, eLearning (virtual, online, web-based) training delivery methods have become preferred
    methods of many organizations.

In this unit, we take a more in-depth look at the various training delivery methods available. As mentioned in
past units, matching the learner’s style with the delivery method is paramount. Therefore, we will explore the
two primary approaches to help you narrow down this decision. The two approaches to learning are cognitive
    and behavioral.

    Cognitive Approach

In the cognitive approach, learning is stimulated through the impact made on cognitive processes such as
thinking, analyzing, retaining, and recalling information. The cognitive approach to training has a strong
emphasis on the understanding of concepts and information. The retention of the material and its
understanding are increased by perceiving the connections between the concepts being learned, breaking
down the connections, and reconstructing them. There are two critical processes in the cognitive approach to
    learning, accommodation and assimilation.

    UNIT IV STUDY GUIDE
    Delivery Systems

HRM 6303, Training and Development 2

    UNIT x STUDY GUIDE
    Title

With the cognitive approach, the learners control their own learning path. The trainer and the method used to
deliver the training facilitate the process of learning. Hence, the self-paced learning is typically a viable option
in the cognitive approach. However, if the learner is not motivated to learn, then the trainer must view the
design and delivery of the training to ensure that the adult learning concepts are incorporated as suggested in
Unit II. In the cognitive approach, the learner is active in the process of learning, which is often self-directed
and self-evaluative. The trainer will act as the facilitator, presenter, and coordinator who will guide the
learners into discovery, solutions, and different perspectives of information. Delivery methods for the cognitive
approach include the classroom lecture method, discussions, and eLearning.

    Classroom Lecture Method

The classroom lecture method is a traditional cognitive delivery approach. In this method, a general
understanding of a topic is introduced. There are many formats that this method can follow to allow for a
formal or interactive experience. In the formal approach, learners listen as a trainer gives a lecture on a topic.
Questions are typically asked toward the end of the lecture, and learners are assessed by activities given by
the trainer and are also evaluated by the trainer. On the other hand, in an interactive format, the learner and
trainer are both engaged in learning the material. There is a dynamic, continuous dialogue between the
learner and the trainer. Given what we know about adult learning, it is wise to ensure that this training format
    be engaging and interactive.

    Discussions

In the discussion delivery method, a two-way dialogue is taking place between the trainer and the learner.
Typically, a short 15- to 20-minute lecture is given about a particular topic, and then the learners are asked to
discuss the topic and the lecture. The trainer supports the discussion by reinforcing the material, expanding
upon the information presented, and allowing the learners to ask questions. The trainer looks for both verbal
and nonverbal feedback to assess desired learning. If learning has not occurred, then more time may need to
be spent on a particular topic.

    eLearning

If you recall from Unit I, eLearning is the delivery of training that is typically done through electronic media
such as virtual classrooms, mobile devices, or web-based learning via a computer. When this method of
training delivery is used, instructors are often positioned to moderate discussions, provide feedback, and
suggest supplemental resources and activities. We will explore two eLearning delivery approaches: webinars
    and social media.

Webinars: As mentioned earlier, technological advances have opened up the number of ways that training
can be delivered. Web conferencing is a method in which live meetings or presentations can be given over
the internet from one central location. Webinars are a specific type of web conferencing tool where the
delivery of training occurs in real time and typically involves a facilitator from one location who communicates
electronically (i.e., computer, telephone, satellite, or through some other technical mean) with audience
members who may reside in different locations. This training delivery method is quite popular due to its
    flexibility and cost savings.

Social media: This is another eLearning approach that has gained much momentum in recent times. Although
new, some experts believe that social media could be useful in all phases of training and development and

HRM 6303, Training and Development 3

    UNIT x STUDY GUIDE
    Title

could fundamentally shift the way training is being delivered today (Leonard, 2015). Some of the uses of
social media in training are listed below.

    • The use of social intranet platforms to announce scheduled training events is now commonplace. A
brief message describes content, and then a link can lead to further explanation or a video of the
    training.

    • Social intranet platforms, such as Yammer or Chatter, can be used to conduct getting-to-know-you
exercises. Participants show up at training events already familiar with each other’s interests and
    backgrounds.

    • Another option is delivering lectures and videos and posting them to video-sharing sites on the
    organization’s intranet.

    • Social media can allow participants to share perspectives and experiences.
    • Support can also be provided for ongoing learning through internal discussion boards where learners

can collaborate and exchange experiences and ideas.
    • Social media can be used to support post-training collaborative assignments and action plans.
    • Intranet or internet can facilitate opportunities for employees to interact with specialists in their field.
    • Social media can also be used to support alumni networks.

    Behavioral Approach

The behavioral approach is a delivery method with an emphasis on real-world situations that are simulated to
mirror the events, processes, and circumstances of a given concept. As mentioned earlier, the adult learner
learns well through experience, whether that be live or simulated. Learning happens through behaviors
practiced and exhibited over time. There are several delivery methods in the behavioral approach, which are
    detailed below.

    • Case studies: Participants would apply a new skill/knowledge to a hypothetical case or situation.
Case studies can simulate historical situations where decision-making is needed. These situations
can be real or imagined and encourage learners to display the behavior of properly making decisions.

    • Role plays: Participants act out and assume roles to practice appropriate behavior or resolve conflicts
for various situations. There are two types of role-playing scenarios, which are listed below.
o Structured role play: In this type of role playing, there is a great deal of information provided about

the situation. Often, there are scripts involved that provide dialogue among the characters. This
type of role playing will encourage learners to display traits needed for the given role-playing
    scenario.

o Unstructured role play: In this type of role playing, the scenario is loosely constructed and free
flowing. This type of role playing provides insight to the learners on how their behavior impacts
    others.

    • Simulations: Participants perform a given role within a scenario designed to resemble a real-life
challenge. This method allows the learners to apply what they have learned. As the trainer allows the
learners to practice the skill, the learners begin to develop proficiency in that given skill.

    • In-basket technique: The in-basket technique is a specified role-playing scenario designed to exhibit
decision-making skills and attitudes. For example, the learners are given information about their role.
This can be a current or future job. Also, general information about the situation is given. The learners
are then given a packet of materials, such as complaints, messages, memos, and reports, which
constitute the in-basket. The learners are then asked to respond to the materials within a few hours.
When all of the appropriate responses have been given, the trainer will ask the learners to discuss
the process they took to make the decisions that they did. The trainer will offer feedback in order to
reinforce behaviors that the learners did well and to provide alternatives for the actions that were not
    done well.

    • Behavior modeling: In this method, an expert will model the behaviors that need to be learned. The
learners will then practice the behaviors in a structured role play. The trainer will then reinforce the
behavior and give feedback on areas that need improvement. This method is different from role
playing in that it gives the learners an example of what the behavior looks like prior to practicing the
    behavior.

    • Coaching: The coaching delivery method is where one-on-one instruction and guidance is given to
learners to help improve their performance in a given area. Typically, this method is used to aid in
performance deficiencies, but it can also act as a motivational tool for those who are performing well.

HRM 6303, Training and Development 4

    UNIT x STUDY GUIDE
    Title

There are many delivery approaches that can help a trainer deliver the content that needs to be learned. One
core focus is to ensure that the delivery style is one that is palatable for all learners. The knowledge for this
comes through the understanding of the various adult learning concepts and then tailoring your delivery
    approach to those concepts.

    Conclusion

There are two primary approaches in matching the learner’s style with the training delivery method. They are
the cognitive approach and the behavioral approach. We also learned the classroom lecture method is a
traditional cognitive delivery approach. Although this delivery method is very much prevalent, eLearning
(virtual, online, web-based, and even social-media based) has become a preferred training method for many
organizations. In training delivery, eLearning is not just a trend, it is here to stay.

to operations), but learning and training still had to move forward in organizations.

HRM 6303, Training and Development 3

could fundamentally shift the way training is being delivered today (Leonard, 2015).

In training delivery, eLearning is not just a trend, it is here to stay.

approach include the classroom lecture method, discussions, and eLearning.

    Classroom Lecture Method

The classroom lecture method is a traditional cognitive delivery approach. In this method, a general
understanding of a topic is introduced. There are many formats that this method can follow to allow for a

The trainer looks for both verbal

    eLearning

If you recall from Unit I, eLearning is the delivery of training that is typically done through electronic media
such as virtual classrooms, mobile devices, or web-based learning via a computer. When this method of
training delivery is used, instructors are often positioned to moderate discussions, provide feedback, and

learns well through experience, whether that be live or simulated.
