    ### Implicit Bias

A major component of this course is the exploration of diversity in early childhood development. This exploration will include a focus on your personal beliefs, values, and perspectives. This journal aims to further develop your cultural competence as a professional. “Culturally competent teachers are able to effectively educate children and work with families from ethnic, racial, lingual, and cultural backgrounds that are different from their own” (Curenton & Iruka, 2024). In this journal, you will complete an Implicit Association Test (IAT), which will ask you to sort pictures and words into groups as fast as you can. In addition to the IAT, there are questions about your beliefs, attitudes, and opinions, as well as standard demographic questions. This assessment should take about 10 minutes to complete. At the end, you will receive your IAT result along with information about what it means. Participation in this assessment is completely anonymous. For more information on how the Implicit Bias Test works, review the video, [_Implicit Bias | Lesson 5: The IAT_Links to an external site.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr9xAcWv790).

    To prepare for this discussion:

    – Read Chapter 1 of the course text.
    – Review this 3-minute video: [_Implicit Bias | Lesson 1: Schemas_Links to an external site.](https://youtu.be/OQGIgohunVw).
    – Review this 4-minute video: [_Implicit Bias | Lesson 2: Attitudes and Stereotypes_Links to an external site.](https://youtu.be/7FgqGAXvLB8).
    – Complete the Implicit Association Test (IAT) using the following steps:
    1. Visit [_Project Implicit: Race IAT_Links to an external site.](https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html).
    2. Scroll down and select “I wish to proceed.”
    3. Choose “Race IAT” from the list of assessments on the left-hand side.
    – Download the [Implicit Bias Journal](https://uagc.instructure.com/courses/142364/files/22817551/?wrap=1) [Download Implicit Bias Journal](https://uagc.instructure.com/courses/142364/files/22817551//download?download_frd=1) template.

    In your assignment,

    – Provide a short explanation of bias and implicit bias using the course text.
    – Discuss the problem with implicit bias from your personal perspective.
    – Describe how participating in the IAT assessment can help you be more culturally competent as a professional. What was your own experience like taking the test?
    – Describe why you, as a professional, need to intentionally think about implicit bias when you work with diverse children and families, such as those who are experiencing poverty or may be dual language learners. Use the text or outside source to support your thinking.
    – Explain the powerful benefits of diversity and inclusivity in the classroom setting for children and families based on your current or future work setting. Use the text or outside sources to support your thinking.

This is an academic journal and must be at least 1.5 to 2 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages and formatted according to [_APA Style_Links to an external site.](https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/apa-style) as outlined in the Writing Center’s [_APA Formatting for Microsoft Word_Links to an external site.](https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/apa-formatting-microsoft-word) resource. **Part A**

    **Week 4 (environment)**

This week's forum assignment is connected to the Learning Environment assignment.  One part of that assignment is to include your philosophy of teaching young children.  It is important to understand your values and beliefs as they relate to teaching young children and to be able to verbalize those beliefs.  That is what your philosophy will do.  This link will provide you with helpful tips for writing your philosophy:
[How to Develop a Philosophy of Teaching for Early Childhood EducationLinks to an external site.](https://resilienteducator.com/classroom-resources/how-to-develop-a-philosophy-of-teaching-for-early-childhood-education/) (opens in a new window).

Use these prompts to craft your philosophy:

    · Describe your beliefs about supporting children of diverse cultures and languages in early childhood settings.

    · Describe your beliefs about supporting children of diverse abilities in early childhood settings.

    · Describe your beliefs about the role of families in supporting the development and learning of young children.

    · Describe your beliefs about the role of educators and other professionals in supporting the development and learning of young children.

    · What do you see as your greatest assets as an early childhood professional? What do you see as your greatest challenges?

    **Part B**

    Design a Classroom/Learning Environment

**Assignment Overview:**  Design a learning environment for one classroom of young children.

**This assignment has several parts**.   Carefully review the entire assignment and ask your instructor if you have any questions.

    ————————————————————————————————————-

**Part 1**:  Before you can design the learning environment, you must describe who is in your classroom and your philosophy of teaching young children.  In a written description, identify the ages of the children in this classroom, the number of children in this classroom, the number of teachers in this classroom, details about the types of families, and characteristics of the children.  Next, include your philosophy of teaching young children that is based on developmentally appropriate practices.  For the week 4 forum assignment, you will create this philosophy and post it for your peers to provide feedback.  Include this teaching philosophy.

**Part 2:** Make a model room for this classroom using any platform of your choosing.  You can create the model room using an actual classroom if you have one available, or you can create one on paper or electronically (tools like Kaplan's Room planner work, but so does using Word or Google docs)  Your room design must fully depict a classroom complete with furniture, learning centers, list of materials, etc.   (Kaplan FloorPlanner:
    [https://www.kaplanco.com/resources/floorplanner.asp)Links to an external site.](https://www.kaplanco.com/resources/floorplanner.asp)

**Your model room must (required components):**

    · follow the guidelines provided in chapter 3 of the Nurturing Creativity textbook

    · include a variety of learning centers including at least 3 from Chapter 3 pages 49 – 54 (Nurturing Creativity textbook)

    · be homelike and include natural elements

    · contain no plastic toys and materials

    · identify the color of the walls

    · identify floor coverings and all furniture including shelving, tables, chairs, changing tables (if infant classroom), etc.  Consider all aspects of a typical day in the classroom

    · include areas for individual time, small groups, and large group activities.

    · have materials in each center that are available for children's use.  You must include the overall cost for the materials needed in each learning center and then include a total cost for all of the materials in the entire classroom.

**Part 3:** Once your model room is designed, evaluate it by answering the questions on this attached document:
[Using MI to evaluate classroomLinks to an external site.](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lhrUuvAFuiiOkl33rSyUbBA4fm9P4lYK/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=112819617288213287474&rtpof=true&sd=true)  Then submit the completed document.

ENG 105: Composition I Essay Assignment

    Synthesis Essay Assignment

Purpose: By this point in the term, you have read several essays about various topics related to our

experiences in contemporary culture. In this final paper, then, you will write an essay which brings

together ideas and data from multiple sources to inform the audience about a specific topic (listed

    below).

Writing this essay will require you to 1) look for connections among the ideas in five assigned essays

from Inquiry; 2) develop a thesis statement and main points which make an informative claim (based on

the assigned essays’ content) in response to your research question; and 3) synthesize information from

your sources to support and explain your main points. Your goal will be to effectively and accurately

synthesize the source material in order to inform your audience. A secondary goal will be to integrate

    and document sources correctly.

Topics: Choose one of the following writing prompts:

 Conversations about gender: What messages do we receive about gender, and from where do

they come? How do these messages shape our experiences, identities, and world?

If you decide on this topic, you will want to consider how our environment impacts our

perceptions of gender as well as our experiences. You might consider the perceptions that our

society has regarding gender and how these perceptions compare and/or contrast with the

    Content:

 Introduction: Your introduction should follow the inverted triangle model in your textbook and

should provide a context for the rest of your essay by providing some background of the cultural

situation which has precipitated the “conversation” regarding the issue about which you’re

writing. That is, it should lead us into the topic as well as provide a context for the topic by

explaining the cultural problem to which the academic “conversation” is responding.

 Thesis: Your thesis statement should avoid making a persuasive opinionated claim, and instead

sources. It should acknowledge agreed-upon components of the academic conversation but also

make mention of diverging views (when appropriate). You might use one of the following

    templates:

o Although scholars do not agree upon ______________, they largely agree that

Body: This section of your essay should provide any additional background necessary and should lay out

the major claims in support of your thesis. Your goal here is NOT to merely summarize each of your

sources. Instead, you need to have topic sentences which put forward a point and then use information

from multiple sources to help explain and support that point. That is, your topic sentences will put

forward overarching areas of agreement or contention you’ve seen across multiple sources (or

conclusions about the issue you’ve come to through reading all of your sources), and your paragraph

content should explain the topic sentence through providing your own discussion as well as information

    synthesized from your sources.

Conclusion: Your conclusion should bring appropriate closure to your essay, tying together the claims

made in the body, reinforcing the thesis, and perhaps even commenting on the potential further-
